We gave Merrick two rooms at the back of the hospital. One room was a bathroom, so he could have a bath every day. Soon his skin was much better.
The second room had a bed, table, and chairs. He had never had a room of his own before. I visited him every day, and talked to him. He loved reading, and talking about books. He was very happy.
But sometimes it was difficult for him. One day a new nurse came to the hospital. She took his food to his room, and opened the door. Then she screamed, and ran out of the room.
I was very angry with the nurse, and went to see Merrick. To my surprise, he didn’t move and just watched her as she cried.
“People don’t like looking at me. I know that,” he said. “They usually laugh or scream.”
“Well, I don’t want nurses to laugh at you, Joseph,” I said angrily. “I want them to help you. This is your home now.”
“Thank you, doctor,” he said, in his strange slow voice. “But it’s not important. I understand that.”
In his one good hand, he had the little picture of his mother. He looked at the picture for a minute. A tear ran out of his eye and down the skin of his ugly face.
“Dr Treves,” he said, slowly. “You and the nurses are very kind. Thank you very much. But I know I can’t stay here long, and…I would like to live in a lighthouse, or a home for blind people. I think those are the best places for me.”
“What do you mean ” I asked.
He did not look at me. He put the flower on the picture and looked at it carefully.
“Nobody could look at me in a lighthouse, so I would be happy there. And blind people can see nothing, so they couldn’t see me, could they ”
“But Joseph,” I said. “This is your home. You aren’t going to leave the hospital.”
“You are a kind man, Dr. Treves. But I can’t stay here very long. I have no money.”
I smiled. “Joseph,” I said. “You can stay here all your life. This will always be your home.”
He was very quiet for a minute. Then he stood up, and walked up and down the room very quickly. A strange sound came from him, like laughing.

The study, published in Nature Aging on 10 November, found that if people speak two or more languages, their brains may age (衰老) more slowly.
Earlier studies have shown that speaking more languages can improve brain abilities such as memory and attention, which helps keep the brain healthy as people get older. However, many of these studies used small samples (样本) and unscientific methods, which leads to results that do not agree with each other and can not be used to other groups.
In this new study, researchers looked at 86,000 people from 27 European countries. Their ages were between 51 and 90. The researchers wanted to find out if speaking more languages was good for healthy ageing. For each participant (参与者), the researchers decided a biobehavioural age gap (生物行为年龄差). They compared each person’s chronological (按时间顺序的) age (how old they are in years) with their biological age (how old their body really is). Biological age is based on things like lifestyle, health, and education level. A high biobehavioural age gap could mean a person is ageing faster—or slower. Then, the researchers compared this age gap with the number of languages each person spoke. The number was reported by the participants themselves, and they did not think about how well they spoke each language.
▲ People who spoke only one language were twice as likely to have a higher biobehavioural age gap than those who spoke two or more languages. Every extra language reduced the risk of faster ageing.
Researcher Christos said, “People have not always agreed on whether speaking many languages helps slow ageing. But I don’t think there has been a study of this size before. It used a very large and mixed sample from many places and that allowed them to control for a number of factors, like people’s background and wealth.” He added that future research should include more people from outside Europe.
34.Why does the writer mention earlier studies in paragraph two
A.To introduce the topic of brain ageing.

C.To explain why the new study is necessary.
D.To tell why people should speak more languages.
35.What does “a biobehavioural age gap” show
A.A person’s real age. B.A person’s language level.

A.What does the biobehavioural age gap tell us about ageing
B.What do participants say about their language learning experience
C.How does the number of languages change people’s ageing speed
D.How does the gap between chronological age and biological age form
37.What would Christos probably agree with
A.Future studies can mainly focus on European participants.
B.The new study is more believable with a large and wide sample.

“Sit”, “stay”, “shake hands”...These are some common dog orders you might know, but how about “find the building”
It may sound surprising, but this is just one of the basic skills for guide dogs. “Guide dogs need to learn more than 30 skills, from avoiding obstacles (障碍) to locating buildings,” said Liu Changtai, 29, who works as a guide dog trainer in Xi’an.
Liu’s day begins early at 7:30. “I walk the dogs one by one so I can check their health and prepare for training,” said Liu. Playing with these cute dogs is fun, but training them is not. It can be boring and tiring. “We need to repeat just one order hundreds of times,” explained Liu. “And almost all training classes are outdoors, no matter whether it is hot or cold.”
Liu said the hardest part is teaching “smart disobedience (违抗)”. As the eyes of blind people, guide dogs must follow orders. But if an order may be dangerous, the dog must refuse it. For example, if a car is coming, the dog must learn to see the danger and not follow the order.
When he saw videos of a blind person and his dog traveling together, he felt very proud. Even though the work is hard, Liu believes it is worth it. He realizes that what he does is not just about training dogs, but about giving people something more important: the freedom to live their own lives.
