Pedro Soto, a 56-year-old school teacher, had a sore throat, so he went to the
doctor, believing he suffered from an infection by some virus. However, after his
doctors did a blood test, they found it was type 2 diabetes (糖尿病). Medicine to get it
under control was immediately recommended, but Soto was determined to try
something different.
Inspired by one of his co-workers whose husband ran the marathon, Soto applied
to the TCS Marathon through an application specifically made for teachers. He had to
share an article in which he spoke about his illness and was ultimately selected for the
team. As he trained and developed a running habit, he received regular blood tests,
and three months later, his blood sugar became normal.
The marathon took place last November. Soto wasn’t able to consistently train
until the beginning of August, because in June, he was also diagnosed (诊断 ) with
Lyme disease. It was also during this time that Soto’s father passed away. Still, he
used his runs as opportunities to release bad feelings and to build his strength back
from being sick.
“For me, it is amazing. It is like a block party, but the block party is the whole
city,” he says. “During the race, you’re pounding for hours, the same joints, the same
bones and muscles. Something’s beginning to feel pain, but the noise of the people
out there, the music, the cheers... everything is louder than your pain.”
Another thing that kept him moving forward was his students. Soto shares that
his students are a motivating factor for him to recover his health. “If I’m sick and don’
t feel good, that is going to affect my instruction in the classroom, my relationship

with the students, and eventually the quality of me as a teacher! Teachers get burned
out because sometimes they don’t balance their lives. This TCS Marathon was a great
opportunity for me to balance my life.”

Consumers rely on various ways to pay daily expenses. The problem is that they
tend to spend more with cashless payment methods in comparison to cash. This
striking cashless effect has recently been confirmed by researchers from the
University of Adelaide.
Led by PhD Student Lachlan Schomburgk, the research team analysed 71
published and unpublished studies from 17 countries, including data from more than
11,000 unique participants. They’ve found that cashless payments lead people to
spend more on status-signalling goods like jewellery, while this effect is notably
absent in acts of donation or tipping.
“Through this meta-analysis, we identified key factors that make the cashless
effect stronger or weaker, which individual studies could not find. By doing this, we
uncovered new key understandings that had often been overlooked by other
researchers in individual studies.” Schomburgk explains.
The findings indicate that consumers should be mindful of how they pay for
goods or services, as this helps them spend less, especially critical in the current
cost-of-living crisis. To avoid overspending, they’re advised to carry cash instead of

cards whenever possible as a self-control method. When using cash, they count and
hand over notes and coins, making spending more noticeable. If nothing is physically
handed over, it’s easy to lose track of how much is spent.
The study also provides useful insights for businesses and policymakers.
“Businesses should know failing to accept the cashless revolution might
unintentionally be jeopardising profit potential,” Schomburgk says. “And
policymakers should communicate to individuals unfamiliar with cashless payments,
such as people who don’t have bank accounts, about the possibility of cashless
methods to lead to overspending.”
Schomburgk stresses a need for urgent in-depth studies of new payment methods,
as research on their specific impacts remains limited due to their novelty. Studying
these methods is vital to keep pace with the evolving payment ecosystem and deepen
understanding of modern consumers’ spending habits.

The world’s population will reach 9.5 billion by 2050, and we need more land to
grow food. However, today’s farming uses 70% of the world’s fresh water, makes
water dirty with chemicals, and needs a lot of fossil fuels. What’s worse, there is no
new usable land left for farming.
A good solution is vertical (垂直的 ) farms — growing crops indoors in tall
buildings in cities. These farms use much less water than traditional farming, avoid
droughts and floods, and produce food all year round. They also cut the cost of
moving food and reduce food going bad, as food is sold near where it is grown.

Some tested technologies make vertical farms possible. Drip irrigation (滴灌 )
sends water rich in nutrients straight to plant roots, saving a lot of water. Aeroponics
(气培法 ) lets plants grow in air with wet air and nutrients (no soil needed), and
hydroponics (水培法) grows plants in water with nutrients. All these methods work
well indoors.
Cities have good spaces for vertical farms, such as empty land, old buildings or
rooftops. These farms can reuse city wastewater to water crops and burn plant waste
to make electricity. Experts say no new technologies are needed to build good vertical
farms.
Vertical farms can make cities more sustainable: using resources without wasting
them and keeping nature balanced. They create new jobs, offer fresh food, and do less

gesture took Angela by surprise. “Her smile made me think that today I'm just right
and I can perform on the stage.”

began to play. As her fingers moved over the keys, she felt a sense of calm wash over
