Travel Tips for a Summer National Park Adventure
Summer is a wonderful time to explore America’s national parks, but crowds can be a challenge. In 2025, national parks received 323 million visits, and popular summer seasons remain as busy as ever. Even lesser-known parks like Congaree and Dry Tortugas see near-record crowds. However, with smart planning, you can still have an unforgettable trip. Here are some expert tips.
1. Choose your visit time wisely.
Arrive before sunrise to enjoy famous spots with few people, because most visitors show up late morning. You can also visit popular sites later in the day when others leave for dinner. Weekdays are usually less crowded than weekends.
2. Get entrance passes early.
Most parks require an entrance fee or the “America the Beautiful” pass. Buying one online ahead of time helps you skip long lines at the gate. Some parks like Arches, Glacier, and Mount Rainier used to require timed-entry reservations, but this year most have ended that requirement.
3. Prepare for possible staff shortages.
Due to funding cuts in 2025, nearly 70 parks have reduced visitor center hours or services. Larger parks handle this better, while smaller ones may struggle. Many seasonal employees are now used for traffic and parking management instead of trail work.
4. Have a backup plan.
If you can’t get into a crowded park, try nearby state parks or national forests. For example, Dixie National Forest is just 15 minutes from Utah’s Bryce Canyon and offers similar stunning views with fewer people. Great Smoky Mountains’ surrounding forests, like Pisgah and Nantahala, also provide peaceful alternatives.
5. Be flexible about accommodation.
Most NPS campgrounds can be reserved six months in advance. If popular sites are sold out, check for cancellations or consider different types of lodging, such as Housekeeping Camp or Curry Village in Yosemite, which offer tent-like stays.
Follow these tips, and you’ll enjoy a fantastic summer adventure in America’s national parks.
21. What does the author suggest doing to avoid crowds at popular sites
A. Visit during weekends. B. Arrive before sunrise or go late in the day.
C. Buy a special entrance pass. D. Stay in nearby national forests.
22. What can we learn about timed-entry reservations from the passage
A. Most parks have stopped requiring them this year.
B. All national parks require them.
C. They are only needed on weekdays.
D. They must be bought six months in advance.
23. Which of the following is recommended if a campground is fully booked
A. Give up the trip. B. Camp outside the park without permission.
C. Try checking for cancellations or different types of accommodation.
D. Arrive at midnight.
B
A restaurant owner is serving up more than pizza these days. He is bringing back a slice of childhood nostalgia in hopes of helping families reconnect around the dinner table again.
At several remodeled Pizza Hut locations, customers are stepping into what feels like a time machine. The iconic red lamps are glowing once again, the red checkered tablecloths are back, and those oversized red plastic cups have returned to the tables. There is even a Pac Man machine(吃豆人游戏机) sitting in the corner.
The old-school revival is the work of Tim Sparks, CEO of Daland Corporation, a restaurant management company that owns several Pizza Hut locations. Sparks decided to renovate some of his restaurants to look like the classic dine in Pizza Huts many people grew up visiting in the 1980s and 1990s.
And the response has been overwhelming.“People come from two or three hours away and I am not making that up,” Sparks told CBS News.
For many customers, walking through the doors feels like reliving childhood memories. Families sit together over pizza while parents point out things their kids have never seen before, like tabletop arcade games(台式街机) and the famous stained glass style lamps that once defined the Pizza Hut experience.
But Sparks says this project is about much more than nostalgia.
In a world filled with screens and distractions, he hopes these restaurants can become places where families slow down and genuinely spend time together.
“If we can get them in here as a family they do tend to put their phones down and actually have conversations and speak with each other,” he said.
Tracking down the original decor has not been easy. Sparks says some of the vintage pieces, especially the classic Pizza Hut lamps, are incredibly difficult to find. Still, he plans to continue restoring more locations in the future.
For Sparks, the effort is worth it if it helps bring even a few families closer together.“I’m not going to tell you I know how to fix the world,” he said, “but I do think that family is a good place to start.”
24. What is the main purpose of Tim Sparks’ renovation of Pizza Hut locations
A. To increase the restaurant’s profits. B. To introduce new menu items.
C. To compete with other pizza chains.
D. To bring back childhood memories and help families reconnect.
25. The phrase “a time machine” in paragraph 2 is used to emphasize that the restaurant ________
A. is very old B. makes customers feel like they have traveled back to the past
C. has a science fiction theme D. serves food from different eras
26. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as part of the retro decoration
A. Red lamps. B. Red checkered tablecloths.
C. Large red plastic cups. D. Jukeboxes.
27. What can be inferred about Sparks’ attitude toward his project
A. He doubts its success. B. He is determined and finds it worthwhile.
C. He thinks it is too expensive. D. He only cares about business.

The risk to the general population in Europe from the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and also Uganda remains very low, ECDC said in a new assessment today, while stressing that EU/EEA countries should strengthen their preparedness as the situation continues to develop.
Exit screening in the countries affected by the outbreak is crucial to reduce risk by identifying symptomatic travellers and stopping those with symptoms from travelling. As this cannot fully prevent new cases because the onset of the disease may begin after travellers have arrived at their destination, it is important that travellers returning from affected areas are informed about the disease and seek medical care promptly if symptoms develop, as well as informing their healthcare provider about their travel history and potential exposure.
While uncertainties remain over the scale of transmission, ECDC assesses the likelihood of infection for anyone from the European Union or European Economic Area (EU/EEA) living in or travelling to affected areas as low, provided they follow the recommended precautionary measures listed in today’s assessment. ECDC underlines that transmission requires direct contact with blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of dead or living infected people or animals. The likelihood of transmission within the EU/EEA is also considered very low, as imported cases are likely to be rapidly identified and isolated, and appropriate infection prevention and control measures implemented immediately.
For now, EU/EEA countries are advised to strengthen their preparedness and response capabilities, including the isolation and management of suspected and confirmed cases, contact tracing, testing capacity, and infection prevention and control measures.
Almost 600 suspected cases and 139 deaths have been reported in DRC as of 20 May 2026. Most cases were reported in Ituri Province, as well as one case in Goma, North Kivu Province. Uganda has so far reported two imported cases from people arriving from DRC. The outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, for which there are currently no licensed vaccines or specific treatments available.
ECDC continues to monitor the situation, and will provide epidemiological updates, situational awareness and risk assessments for the duration of the current Ebola disease outbreak. The Centre is also supporting preparedness and response activities across the EU/EEA through risk assessment, laboratory support, and coordination with the European Commission, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and other international partners. The Centre has also activated the EU Health Task Force.
28. Why is exit screening in affected countries not enough to fully prevent new cases
A. Because the virus can be spread through the air
B. Because travellers may develop symptoms after arriving at their destination
C. Because exit screening is not carried out properly
D. Because no vaccines are available
29. How is Ebola virus transmitted according to ECDC
A. Through the air when an infected person coughs
B. Through contaminated food and water
C. Through direct contact with blood or other body fluids of infected people or animals
D. Through casual contact such as shaking hands
30. What are EU/EEA countries advised to do in response to the outbreak
A. Enhance their readiness and response capacities
B.Close their borders to travellers from Africa
C. Stop all flights from the DRC and Uganda
D. Rely only on exit screening in affected countries
31. What role is ECDC playing in the current Ebola outbreak
A. It is developing a new vaccine for the virus
B. It is treating infected patients in Europe
C. It is providing risk assessments and supporting preparedness activities
D. It is taking over the outbreak response from WHO
D
Ecological effects of light pollution
Based on laboratory experiments and field studies, researchers in 2024 found that insects orient their backs toward an artificial light source while flying, causing them to loop endlessly around it. Researchers also found that repositioning the light causes insects to stall mid-air and turn their bodies so that their backs face the light perpendicularly at all times. This reflexive behavior—reorienting themselves in response to the brightest object in their field of vision, natural or artificial—is called the dorsal light response. Under natural conditions, with light from the sky, this behavior helps certain animals, such as fish and insects, sense which way is up and maintain stability and balance during movement. Flying insects, in particular, are likely too small to rely on gravity and their sensory receptors alone to stay aligned with the horizon. So they use light from the sky to ascertain which way is up and adjust their orientation. Artificial light, however, interferes with this behavior.
Before humans lit fires and created other artificial light sources, the Moon and the stars provided the required cue for insects to adjust their flight attitude (orientation relative to gravity) at night. Because these celestial objects are very far away, they act as an almost fixed point of reference in the sky, visible overhead as an insect flies. However, an artificial light source at a lower elevation than the Moon appears to move past a flying insect, and the insect must reposition itself to keep the light visible overhead. This interferes with its straight flight path, causing it to fly in circles, halt mid-air, fly upward along the light, flip upside down, and eventually crash to the ground. The swarming, swirling behavior of flying insects around our porch and street lights is therefore the result of their disorientation because of a source of artificial light, rather than their attraction to it for heat, navigational cues, or escape direction.
The researchers suggest that artificial light likely draws in and traps insects in a frenzy of erratic flight patterns only when the insects are close by. And not every flying insect is equally affected by it. The oleander hawkmoth (Daphnis nerii) and the vinegar fly (Drosophila species) did not show change in movement patterns when exposed to artificial light placed in various ways during experiments, suggesting that some species may not depend strongly on dorsal light response to orient themselves during flight.
32. What does“the dorsal light response” refer to in the passage
A. Insects’reflexive dorsal orientation toward the brightest light source.
B. Insects’ ability to fly straight toward the moon.
C.Insects’ attraction to heat from artificial lights.
D. Insects’ preference for natural light over artificial light.
33. The word “ascertain” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to ______.
A. ignore B. forget C. change D. determine
34. According to the passage, why did the Moon and stars serve as a good reference for insects before artificial lights existed
A. They provided heat for insects. B. They were close to the Earth’s surface.
C. They moved along with the insects.
D. They functioned as a virtually stable reference point across the sky.
35.Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude toward artificial light based on this passage
A. It has unintended negtognative effects on insect behavior.
B. It is necessary for human safety.
C. It should be completely banned. D. It benefits insects more than natural light.

How to Plan Your Travel Budget
Determining your travel budget is the essential first step. Figure out exactly how much you can afford to spend without breaking the bank. At the same time, decide which luxuries you can live without. This information will help you narrow down your list of preferred destinations based on cost.
You also need to make some personal trade-offs. Ask yourself if you are willing to stay at a campground or hostel in order to see the sights you want, or if you need more comfortable accommodations. Make the same call regarding food: is dining out an integral part of your dream vacation, or are you willing to live on simple meals like peanut butter sandwiches to reduce costs 36
Next, research the cost of living at each potential destination. First, come up with a list of items that you expect to purchase while traveling. Then, for each destination you have in mind, research the costs of those items to make sure they don't exceed your budget. Remember that an American dollar, for example, doesn't go as far in New York City as it might in a small town. If you are considering other countries, factor in the exchange rate between their currency and yours. 37 During the tourist season, costs may rise significantly above their off-season norms.
Now that you have a firm budget, decide how much time you have to travel. Determine how many days (including travel time) you will spend away from home. 38 A brief trip of a week or two might enable you to spend more on luxuries like fine dining and nice hotels. Alternatively, it may make a steady diet of PB&J seem more doable so you can spend your money on things like scuba gear rentals or Broadway tickets. 39
In contrast, a longer trip of several weeks will allow you to visit multiple places, such as all of Holland instead of just Amsterdam. 40 This means you need to plan carefully to make your money last.
A. Also consider whether your destination has a tourist season.
B. This way, you can stretch your budget to cover more days or activities.
C. Your answers to these questions will influence your destination choice.
D. Therefore, you should always choose the cheapest option for accommodations.
E. Use this number to decide which activities to prioritize and how much to spend.
F. The longer trip demands more careful daily budgeting to make your funds last.
G. On the other hand, a short trip allows you to be less concerned about daily costs.

Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. One night, I received a fare at 2:30 a.m. The building was dark except for a single light on the ground floor. Many drivers would have just honked, but I always went to the door. This passenger might need my help.
A frail elderly woman in her eighties opened the door. She wore a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil, like someone from a 1940s movie. Her apartment looked empty—furniture covered with sheets, no clocks on the walls. She asked me to carry her small nylon suitcase to the cab. Then she took my arm, and we walked slowly to the car.
She kept thanking me. “It’s nothing,” I said. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated.”When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and asked, “Could you drive through downtown ”“That’s not the shortest way,” I replied.“Oh, I don’t mind. I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to a hospice.”I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. “I don’t have any family left. The doctor says I don’t have very long.” I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me where she had worked as an elevator operator, the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived as newlyweds, and a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she danced as a girl. Sometimes she asked me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the sun began to rise, she said, “I’m tired. Let’s go now.”We drove in silence to the address—a small convalescent home. Twwo orderlies came out as we pulled up. I took her suitcase to the door. She was already seated in a wheelchair.“How much do I owe you ” she asked, reaching into her purse.“Nothing,” I said.“You have to make a living.”“Oh, there are other passengers.”I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. “You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,” she said. “Thank you.”

Poetry Festival Deepens China-Arab Literary Dialogue
A special session of the 2026 International Youth Poetry Festival, focusing on China-Arab states exchanges, opened last weekend in Guangzhou, South China’s Guangdong Province. The event will run through Sunday.
More than 40 young poets and writers from 13 Arab countries, including Egypt, Syria and Morocco, gathered with over 40 Chinese poets. Activities include poetry readings, academic dialogues, seminars and field visits in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing.
Zhang Hongsen, chairman of the China Writers Association, said the two great poetic traditions, though separated by distance and language, share deep wisdom and emotion. He encouraged young poets to learn from each other while staying rooted in their own cultures. Egyptian poet Yahia Mohamed Wagdy Lotfy Omar noted that poetry can cross borders and translation serves as a bridge.
Organizers said the festival has become an important platform for global youth literary dialogue.

Paragraph 1:
I squeezed her hand, then walked back to my cab and sat there for a long time. I didn’t pick up any more passengers that shift. Instead, I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once and driven away The thought chilled me. I realized that a simple choice to be kind had meant the world to someone at the end of her life.
Paragraph 2:
That day I learned that great moments often catch us unaware, beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one. We are conditioned to think our lives revolve around big events—graduations, weddings, promotions. But sometimes the most important thing we ever do is slow down for a stranger, listen to her story, and offer a hug. I drove a cab for many years, but that early morning ride remains the most meaningful journey of my life. A little moment of joy, she had called it. For me, it was a moment I would never forget.
