Labor(劳动) education in kindergartens shapes young minds
Published: Oct 28, 2025 11:09 PM
In Luohe, Henan Province, a kindergarten has become famous—not for toys or cartoons, but for real-life work! Kids there knead dough, grow vegetables, and even help roast(烤) chicken. Wearing small aprons, they laugh while kneading dough or washing vegetables. This special kindergarten is changing how people think about early education.
As the great educator Tao Xingzhi said, “Life is education.” Learning by doing—like planting trees or fixing a broken toy—can be more meaningful than just remembering facts.
Similar programs are growing across China. In Jiangsu, children water and gather watermelons from their own garden. In Sichuan, kindergarteners learn how to repair everyday items(日常用品). These activities show that kindergarten isn’t only about slides and picture books—it’s also about learning responsibility, teamwork, and independence.
Many parents support this idea. Du Jun, a mother in Beijing, says, “Today’s children need labor education. It teaches them skills and, more importantly, it develops responsibility and independence.”
China made labor education part of national policy in 2018. Experts say it helps children value all kinds of work and builds healthy habits early. Not every kindergarten can copy this exactly—cities and villages have different resources(资源) and needs. The goal isn’t performance or competition. It’s helping kids grow with confidence, kindness, and real-world understanding.
The rise of labor-based teaching reminds parents and educators that true education not only lifts children’s eyes to the stars, but also helps them stand firmly on the ground.
