An 83-year-old man has been learning to swim after his wife wanted to go to on holiday abroad. Former paratrooper(伞兵)John Potter, from Teesside, said his swimming teacher made the lessons "very easy" for him. He said his ultimate goal, a 14-day holiday to the Canary Islands, was "the best thing he ever did". Mr Potter has since been awarded his swim school's swimmer of the year prize with his instructors saying it was never too late to learn.
Back in early 2023, his wife told him she longed to visit a holiday club in Lanzarote. Eager to accompany her, he realized he could not swim at all. Then he found the local swim school and signed up for courses. He once received water-related military training, including diving into deep pools and jumping into the sea from planes, yet he never learned to swim systematically due to busy schedules. He often regretted not learning it earlier. At first, he practiced floating with buoyancy aids(浮力辅助装备) before learning formal swimming moves. Amazingly, he could swim across the whole pool with breaststroke after only four lessons. Mr Potter said the only issue was his breathing, which he had struggled with following a cancer diagnosis in 2020.
A number of older people inquired about lessons but people do not usually follow through, Mr Firbank said. He said learning to swim is usually on people's bucket lists but that it is much rarer to see older people coming in to learn.
"If you're 83 years old, don't think it's too late", he said, adding: "It's never too late, give it a go." Mr Potter said he enjoyed swimming during the first seven days of his trip abroad, but he unfortunately suffered an accident that cut his holiday short. "I fell down some stone steps and fractured my skull and cut my head open and smashed my right shoulder up", he said.
He spent some time in a hospital in Lanzarote until he was well enough to travel home. Mr Potter has since gone back to Borocuda Swim School to brush up on his swimming skills after his shoulder surgery.
24.Why did John Potter decide to learn swimming
A. To win the school swimming prize.
B. To travel abroad together with his wife.
C. To finish his military training.
D. To recover from his cancer disease.
25.What does the underlined phrase “brush up on” mean in the last paragraph
A. Give up completely. B. Learn from scratch.
C. Practise and improve. D. Teach others patiently.
26.What can we infer about John Potter from the passage
A. He mastered breaststroke very quickly.
B. His military training helped him learn breathing well.
C. He finished his whole holiday smoothly abroad.
D. He disliked taking swimming lessons at first.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage
A. To show us how to learn swimming well in old age.
B. To praise the swimming coach’s excellent teaching skills.
C. To tell a story and convey the idea that it’s never too late to learn.
D. To warn people of possible dangers during overseas trips.

A new deep dive into our prevailing passion for protein is well-timed—yet whether it delivers practical answers remains questionable, as Alexandra Thompson explores.
Written by sociologists Samantha King and Gavin Weedon, Protein examines the sociocultural roots of modern-day protein mania. Protein performs vital physiological functions ranging from muscle building and infection resistance to hormonal regulation, though it is by no means superior to carbohydrates or fats, currently enjoying unprecedented public popularity.
The fundamental drawback lies in its failure to address ordinary readers’ practical concerns. Rather than offering dietary guidance, the book elaborates on elementary chemical knowledge such as amino acids(氨基酸) and the etymology of“protein”. It further links protein fever to demographic differences: for millennials(千禧一代), it is tied to fitness pursuit; for the elderly, a preventive against age-related muscle loss. King and Weedon even claim that protein-fueled training serves as a comfort for fragile masculinity, while protein promotion among seniors functions as a political measure to reduce public expenditure on age-related illnesses.
Nevertheless, these theoretical assumptions lack solid empirical evidence. As a health journalist, Thompson stresses that protein deficiency is rare in high-income nations, whereas long-term excessive intake may overburden kidneys and elevate risks of cardiovascular(心血管的) diseases.
In essence, the book interprets protein craze from a sociological perspective rather than providing evidence-based dietary advice, leaving most readers puzzled about proper protein intake.
28. What do King and Weedon mainly study in their book Protein
A. The physiological functions of protein.
B. Sociocultural reasons for protein’s popularity.
C. Ways to prevent age-related muscle loss.
D. Comparison between protein and carbohydrates.
29. What is the major disadvantage of the book
A. It ignores chemical knowledge about protein
B. It fails to solve readers’ practical dietary problems
C. It overstates protein’s effects on people’s fitness
D. It provides clear guidance on protein intake
30. What can we infer from Paragraph 4
A. People in rich countries commonly lack protein.
B. Short-term extra protein intake will damage kidneys.
C. Long-term too-much protein may cause health problems.
D. The book has enough evidence for its theories.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the book Protein
A. Fully supportive B. Strongly critical
C. Objective and doubtful D. Uninterested and casual
D
Humanoid(人形的) robots, once a fantasy in science fiction, are now moving from screens into real life. Powered by rapid progress in artificial intelligence, an increasing number of consumer-grade humanoid robots have been introduced to the market, making the dream of owning a robot housekeeper closer than ever.
The humanoid robot industry is booming globally. Statistics show that more than 40 new models were launched worldwide in 2025, with 60 percent coming from China. Behind the boom is the rapid development of AI systems, which enable robots to sense, learn and act more intelligently. Many industry leaders predict that 2026 will mark a new starting point for humanoid robots, as they will be more widely used in daily life. At present, several popular models can be reserved, with prices ranging from thousands of pounds to $20,000. Some companies also offer monthly subscription plans to lower the entry cost.
However, practical problems cannot be ignored. Although human-shaped robots fit easily into home environments, they are far from perfect. Most have clear limits in payload and movement, which restricts the housework they can finish. What troubles users most is battery life. Many models work for only one to four hours on a full charge and cannot support heavy and long-time tasks. Besides, some experts argue that human-like design is not always the most efficient or cost-effective choice for housework.
Intelligence and safety also matter greatly. Equipped with cameras and AI systems, humanoid robots can recognize simple commands and perform basic duties such as cleaning and organizing. However, their ability to deal with complex situations is still far behind humans. Meanwhile, privacy risks arise as robots collect personal information while working.
In brief, humanoid robots represent a new wave of technology, but they are not for everyone. People should consider their real needs, performance and costs before making a decision. Only in this way can we enjoy the benefits that technology brings.
32.What leads humanoid robots to come into real-world life
A. The popularity of science fiction.
B. The rapid development of artificial intelligence.
C. The fast growth of robot industry.
D. People’s increasing interest in high-tech products.
33.Where do most new humanoid robot models come from in 2025
A. The UK. B. China. C. The US. D. Japan.
34.What can we infer about humanoid robots from the text
A. They can finish all heavy housework non-stop.
B. They have better intelligence than humans in complex tasks.
C. Their wide daily application is expected in the near future.
D. Human-like design is always the best choice for housework.
35.What is the main idea of the text
A. Humanoid robots step into real life with both advantages and problems.
B. China takes the lead in producing all kinds of humanoid robots.
C. AI technology completely solves the problems of humanoid robots.
D. People should buy humanoid robots without hesitation.

Last semester, I faced a widespread struggle among students: I could hardly focus on my study. My smartphone, intended to assist with homework and research, gradually turned into the biggest barrier to my productivity. Whenever I settled down to work, notifications and apps would draw my attention instantly. 36
One afternoon, my teacher observed my distraction and offered me practical tips. I determined to put them into action. I started with activating the “Do Not Disturb” function on my phone. 37 No more rings or vibrations interrupted my thoughts, and I felt much more ready to devote myself to study.
Then I adopted timed study sessions. I set a 30-minute timer and placed my phone well out of reach. 38 When the timer went off, I took a short break before continuing. This simple method made my study far more efficient and less tiring.
I also turned on Airplane mode and disabled Wi-Fi when I didn’t need online resources. 39 Freed from digital interference, I could focus more deeply and complete tasks in much less time.
To strengthen my self-control, I informed my friends that I would not respond to messages during my study hours. 40 I even began leaving my phone in another room to resist the desire to check it frequently.
Gradually, I made significant progress. I realized that small but consistent changes could help anyone overcome phone distractions and make study time more meaningful.
A. It worked right away.
B. It stopped digital interruptions.
C. I was at a loss for effective solutions.
D. Self-control began to take effect gradually.
E. I told them I would reply after finishing tasks.
F. No frequent checks interrupted my focused work.
G.Such efforts gradually boosted my learning efficiency.

Kell Morris and Jo Roop were warm-hearted middle-aged divorcees who fell in sincere love and got married after going through previous unhappy marriages. After decades of hard-working days, they finally retired to a quiet small city in Idaho, escaping from the noisy, fast paced modern urban life. In the year 2024, eager for a more peaceful and natural lifestyle, they moved to Alaska to start their long expected new life surrounded by wild scenery.
One sunny morning, the couple decided to go hiking outdoors to enjoy the fresh air. Unluckily, Morris was suddenly trapped under a huge 700-pound boulder(巨石) by accident when crossing a shallow creek. The icy cold creek water kept rushing around his body, and his left leg was tightly pinned down by piles of smaller rocks. Worse still, low-temperature hypothermia began to set in quickly. Morris gradually felt extremely weak, with his speech becoming slower and more unclear. Roop stayed anxiously by her husband’s side all the time, holding his head steadily above the rushing water to keep him from drowning in the cold stream.
Luckily, professional rescuers arrived at the scene soon. Harrington, the experienced incident commander, judged the whole situation seriously at once. The rapidly rising water and the extremely heavy boulder made the whole rescue work extremely risky. If they failed to lift the rock properly, Morris might be crushed to death immediately. Therefore, they had to race against time without a second to lose.
While waiting for more manpower and rescue equipment, rescuers carefully examined Morris’s twisted boot, worrying that his leg would suffer serious permanent injury. Morris tried hard to wiggle his toes again and again but failed completely. Everyone present thought he was going to lose his leg for good. Time was running out rapidly. Filled with deep love, Roop kept encouraging her husband firmly not to give up no matter how hard the situation was.

Dear Jim,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English radio station.
I would choose Daily Labor Stories without hesitation. For one thing, labor education plays a vital role in our growth, and sharing real-life labor stories helps us form a good attitude towards work. For another, it provides a wonderful platform for us to practice our oral English in a relaxing way. Besides, it can inspire more students to take part in daily labor activities actively.
I firmly believe this column will bring warmth and energy to our campus life.
Best Wishes
Li Hua

With more rescuers and heavy-duty tools arriving, the rescue operation got underway right away. Harrington skillfully commanded his team to place stable supports under the boulder to stop it from sliding. Every second counted as the water level kept rising rapidly around them. Roop knelt closely beside Morris, constantly wiping the icy water off his face and whispering soft words to cheer him up. Biting his teeth hard, Morris endured the sharp pain and coldness bravely. Every slight shake of the rock made all the rescuers hold their breath, fearing that one wrong move would cost Morris his life.
Hours of hard work finally paid off. The huge boulder was successfully moved aside, and Morris was pulled out safely. Surprisingly, his injured leg was saved despite serious bruises and cuts. Tired and wet, the couple hugged tightly, tears of relief rolling down their faces. This terrifying accident was a tough test for them. They realized that true love and unyielding courage could always light up the darkest moments in life. From then on, they cherished every peaceful day together more than ever before.
