About 5,000 years ago, there was a kind leader named Shennong in China. He saw villagers getting sick but having no medicine. “I must help them!” he thought. So, he left his home, carrying a basket and walking through mountains and rivers. Day after day, he tasted hundreds of herbs (草药)—some sweet, some bitter (苦的), some even poisonous (有毒的).
One summer, a village child had a high fever with no medicine. Shennong climbed a hill. His hands were cut by some plant leaves but he didn’t stop. He tried a green leaf, then another. Finally, he found a herb—when boiled, its juice cooled the child’s fever. The next day, the child laughed and played. Villagers cheered, “Shennong, you’re our hero!” He smiled, “We all help each other—this is how we stay strong.”
Once, he ate a wrong plant and fell ill. His followers rushed to see him, but Shennong said, “If I don’t try, how will others find safe herbs ” Luckily, he drank the mountain spring water and got better.
Later, he wrote down what he learned in a book, teaching people which herbs cure (治愈) fevers, cuts, or coughs.
Shennong’s story teaches us: Work hard to help others, even if it’s not easy. Be brave to try new things, and never forget those who care about you. Today, we still remember him—our first “herb doctor” and a hero of hard work and love.

In the autumn of 2025, when the new term began, a text was added to the Chinese textbook —There’s a Shining Star Called Nan Rendong.
Born in 1945, Nan Rendong was the top scorer in science in the college entrance exam in Jilin Province when he entered Tsinghua University in 1963.
In the early 1990s, Nan wanted to build a radio telescope (射电望远镜) 500 metres across. At that time, the biggest one in China was less than 30 metres across. To realize his dream, Nan returned to China to lead the FAST project.
The first challenge Nan and his team faced was finding a suitable location — a problem that took the scientist 12 years to solve. Finally, Nan discovered a large crater (坑) hidden in Guizhou Province.
The cable-net construction (索网结构建设) of the telescope was another challenge. During the process of solving the problem, Nan and his team had nothing to refer to. “During every ▲ , Nan was there, trying to solve the problem,” said Jiang Peng, Nan’s helper. “Most of the scientists working on the FAST project have their own fields. But Nan knew everything.”
After more than twenty years of development, the project was successfully completed when FAST, the largest and most sensitive (灵敏的) radio telescope in the world, began to operate in 2016.
FAST is able to receive signals from about 10 billion light years away, and with it, Nan hoped to discover the origins (起源) of the universe and life. “The reason why humans evolved (进化) from lower forms of life to what we are now is that we’ve always kept the spirit of exploring the unknown,” Nan said. Sadly, FAST, also known as the China Sky Eye, had just started to “watch” the universe, while the founding father of the project closed his eyes forever.
( )62. Why was building FAST difficult
A. Because it cost too much money.
B. Because no one wanted to help the team.
C. Because the weather was always bad in Guizhou.
D. Because China had little experience with big telescopes.
( )63. How long did it take Nan and his team to find a suitable location for the project
A. 12 years. B. 20 years. C. 30 years. D. 50 years.
( )64. Which of the following is the most suitable for “ ▲ ”
A. failure B. fight C. fall D. fact
( )65. What can FAST do
A. It can send signals to other planets.
B. It can receive signals from far away.
C. It helps change the universe.
D. It is a symbol of peace.
D
We all have those moments when bright ideas hit us, but not everyone can develop such moments into the fruits of creative thinking. While we believe creative thinking is the falling apple of Isaac Newton, one of the greatest scientists, we seldom notice that creative thinking is in fact a process (过程).
Let’s look at what happened in 1666.
Sitting in the garden, Newton watched an apple fall from a tree. He began to wonder if the same force that pulled the apple down also kept the moon circling the earth. Newton believed it did. He called it “gravity (重力).”
This story has become one of the most popular examples of “eureka” moments. But when we cheer for the great discovery, the whole process of creative thinking shouldn’t be forgotten.
Newton studied math for long to have a better understanding of the world. He always enjoyed finding new ways to solve problems. The falling apple was only the fruit of years of hard work before. It also started the train of thought that continued for the next twenty years.
Newton began to examine “gravity” carefully. He experimented. Then he studied the results and used what he had learned to do new experiments. In 1687, the greatest scientific work ever written came out. The whole process of creative thinking works the same in our life.
In school, we prepare ourselves for the right moment. Once the moment comes, we catch it and then keep working for years to come. It takes much to get the fruits of creative thinking, but the sweetest fruits will be ready for those who wait the longest.
( )66. Isaac Newton is a famous ________.
A. doctor B. engineer C. chemist D. scientist
( )67. The underlined word “eureka” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A. I’ve got it B. I give up C. I’ve no idea D. I believe it
( )68. The writer mainly develops his idea by ________.
A. raising questions B. giving examples
C. listing numbers D. explaining differences
( )69. The creative thinking process for Newton follows the order of ________.
a. He caught the right moment.
b. He did experiments over and over again.
c. He saw an apple fall from a tree.
d. He studied math for long.
A. a-c-d-b B. d-a-c-b C. a-b-c-d D. d-c-a-b
( )70. The best title of this passage probably is ________.
A. Newton Did Experiments
B. Newton Discovered the Gravity
C. Experiments Make Newton Famous
D. Creative Thinking Needs Hard work
