Two months ago, I went to China to teach English. During those days, I found something different—one difference is how people break the ice in conversations. “Isn’t the weather nice today ” is a typical question heard in daily life in the UK.
People in China have a habit of beginning conversations by asking questions like “Have you eaten yet ”. Some might think this type of question is an invitation to lunch, but in fact, this is more of a greeting used to express concern for the person you’re talking to. Although it’s a question I’m still not used to being asked all the time, I think it’s a really pleasant way to start conversations or to greet each other because it shows you care about the person you’re talking to.
Although these two ways to start conversations may be different, the one thing they have in common is that the topics affect everybody in our daily life. Everyone can relate to things like the weather or food at different mealtimes. One of the best ways to break the ice in a conversation with someone new is to talk about things you and the other person might have in common. I’m not sure I’ll be able to break the habit of talking about the weather, but surely I think I could get used to talking more about food, especially as it’s so delicious in China!
( )59. Where does the writer come from
A. China. B. The UK. C. America. D. Australia.
( )60. Why do Chinese people often say “Have you eaten yet ”
A. Because they want to invite you to have dinner.
B. Because they’d like to greet you in this way.
C. Because they want to know if you’re hungry.
D. Because they want to play a joke on you.
( )61. Why does the writer write this passage
A. To explain why Chinese food is nice and delicious.
B. To tell readers similar customs in the UK and in China.
C. To show different ways of breaking the ice in conversations.
D. To tell readers why British people care more about weather.

The Debate (辩论) on Whether Good Manners Are Still Important
Nowadays, people are discussing whether good manners are still as important as they used to be. Some think manners are very important, while others believe they are old-fashioned and unnecessary.
On the one hand, many people believe that manners are the basic rules for getting on well with others. They teach us how to behave properly. For example, using a knife and fork the right way at the table can show respect. Also, good manners create a friendly environment. People can spend time together without worrying about offending (冒犯) each other.
On the other hand, some people feel that manners can put too much pressure on people to fit in. What’s more, good manners can be different from one culture to another. For example, in some countries, it’s polite to eat with your hands, while in others, using chopsticks is expected. Besides, they argue that being polite doesn’t always reflect true feelings. If people are kind to each other, there is no need to follow set rules. Also, manners have changed over time. About 100 years ago, children were expected to be quiet unless an adult spoke to them, which is very different from today.
Now that you’ve read more about this topic, visit kids. / polls so that you can vote in our debate. Vote YES if you think it’s important to have good manners or NO if you don’t. We’ll publish the results next week.
( )62. What can we infer from the passage
A. Manners have become stricter now.
B. Children today are politer than before.
C. Manners are different in different cultures.
D. People no longer care about manners.
( )63. Which is NOT a reason why some people dislike manners
A. They give people too much pressure to fit in.
B. Politeness doesn’t always show real feelings.
C. They think manners have changed over time.
D. All the manners are difficult to follow.
( )64. What is the structure of the passage
( )65. Where can readers vote on this topic
A. In a class discussion. B. At a community meeting.
C. In a local newspaper. D. On a website.
D
The Lunar New Year is full of traditional customs. One, still quite popular, is to hang the Chinese character fu (fortune) upside down on special places. What’s the true meaning of hanging the Chinese character fu upside down for Chinese people
It works as a pun (双关语) . As “upside down” in Chinese sounds like “arrive”, so its meaning is “Fortune arrives (at your home) ”—a New Year greeting to the household.
So where don’t people hang the Chinese character fu upside down On the front door!
The front door is the entrance to the household. It’s where good fortune can be invited into the house. In Chinese culture, it’s a place that needs to be respected. An upside-down posting of fu on the front door is unnecessary and impolite.
In the past, we commonly saw the character fu put upside down on the shelves, on the bins and on some big urns (壶, 缸) that may be full of anything from food to water. Do you know the causation That’s because we use the rice vat (大桶, 大盆) , the water vat and trash bins to pour things out. In order not to pour the fortune out, people hang the Chinese character fu upside down. And the shelves are used to store things, so the upside-down fu shows fortune can come, too.
Now it’s not necessary for us to know about the true meaning of hanging the Chinese character fu upside down clearly. We just regard it as one of the most important parts of our traditional culture.
( )66. What does the upside-down fu mean in Chinese culture
A. Good news comes. B. Fortune arrives.
C. Bad feelings stop. D. The Lantern Festival is coming.
( )67. Where don’t people hang the Chinese character fu upside down

A. The good fortune can be invited into the house through the front door.
B. It can stop bad people coming into the house.
C. The sunlight can enter the house through the front door.
D. The bad luck can be driven out of the house through the front door.
( )69. What does the underlined word “causation” mean in Paragraph 5
A. Reason. B. Problem. C. Influence. D. Center.
( )70. What’s the best title for the text
A. A Story about the Chinese Lunar New Year

C. The Ways to Celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year

The phoenix coronet fridge magnet (凤冠冰箱贴) from the National Museum of China in Beijing is a big hit. A large number of museum visitors list it as one of the “most wanted cultural and creative products”.
The fridge magnet looks like a real ancient phoenix coronet from the Ming Dynasty and comes in two kinds: wooden and metal. The metal coronets come with AR effects (效果). It allows people to see themselves wearing them after scanning a QR code.
Visitors can buy the fridge magnets at the museum’s gift shop. Fu Zicheng, a 12-year-old student from Beijing, first saw the phoenix coronet fridge magnet online. He liked it so much that he went to the National Museum of China to see the real thing and learn about its story. After seeing the real coronet and a large number of other exhibits in the museum, Fu shared, “It’s amazing to see the richness of Chinese history.”
Today, the “museum fever” is heating up in our country. Tourists’ interest in culture is one of the reasons behind it. To attract more visitors, museums across the country have introduced cultural and creative products related to their exhibits, from fridge magnets and key rings to soft toys. 81. 范文:
Hello, everyone!
I’m Li Hua. It’s my honor to speak here. We can all help share Chinese culture in English. Here’s how:
First, learn our culture well. Know the meanings behind festivals like the Spring Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Besides, use simple and clear English. There is no need to translate word by word. For example, you can say “yuanxiao means family reunion and sweet rice balls”.
Also, use photos or short videos. They make your sharing more interesting and easier to understand.
Finally, be confident and friendly. Smile when you share—it helps people feel closer to our culture.
Let’s start sharing and be proud of our culture!
Thank you!
