Why does Shenzhen Bay Park stay “dim and dark”, at night The park’s officials soon explained that they were dimming or turning off lights to protect migratory birds(候鸟).
Shenzhen Bay Park lies on the East Asian-Australasian flyway, one of the world’s nine main migratory bird ways. Every winter, tens of thousands of birds rest here during their long journeys. Too much man-made light can affect their resting and migratory habits. To offer birds a quiet dark environment, the park chose to dim lights and cut down nighttime lighting.
Of course, this doesn’t mean all lights are off. The main gates and walkways still have basic lighting for safety, so people can use the park at night. At the same time, areas important to the birds are kept dark or softly lit.
After learning the reason, many people supported the warm decision. “We should leave living spaces for wildlife,” they said.
Dimming lights brings good changes. It helps wild animals by reducing harm to their natural cycles. It also lets people see starry skies clearly and get better rest at night.
Shenzhen is not alone. In Lanshan County, Hunan, people also turn off public lights at a fixed time from September to November each year. Even square dancers, moved by the project, were willing to choose to use dim lights to help birds find their way.
As cities grow and develop, Shenzhen’s example shows progress doesn’t always mean bright city lights. A great city knows when to move forward and when to step back, making space for nature’s needs.

A. By raising a question. B. By telling a story. C. By comparing opinions.
24. What does the underlined word “dim” mean

A. It turns off all the lights for bird’s safety.
B. It stops people from visiting the park at night.
C. It reduces lights properly while keeping basic lighting.
26. Which can be the best title for the passage
A. Lights Down, Birds Safe
B. Dark Skies, Shining Stars
C. Bright Lights, Beautiful Nights

These days, a heartwarming “time bank” project is becoming more popular in many Chinese communities, including Changsha. It is a special volunteer system. Young people here help elderly residents (居民) with daily tasks and store their “volunteer hours” as points. When the young grow old, they can exchange (交换) these hours for help from other young volunteers.
The project started two years ago in an old community near the Xiangjiang River. Many elderly people there live alone and have difficulty with small things like carrying heavy bags, fixing light bulbs or using smartphones. Young volunteers, mostly college students and office workers, visit them regularly. They chat with the old, help with housework, and teach them how to shop online or video-call family members.
This simple idea has created a win-win situation. The elderly feel less lonely and more connected to the community. For young volunteers, it is a meaningful way to give back and learn patience and respect. “Helping the old makes me value my family more. It helps to develop a closer relationship among us.” said Wang Yi, a 16-year-old student volunteer. The “time bank” has over 200 volunteers and serves more than 150 elderly residents now.
However, the project still faces small challenges. Some volunteers give up because of busy schedules (日程), and a few elderly people are too shy to ask for help. To keep the “time bank” running smoothly, community leaders are planning a new volunteer training program. What will the new program include
27. What can young volunteers do with their stored volunteer hours
A. Become a volunteer easily.
B. Make money for the community.
C. Get help in return when they are old.
28. How do young volunteers help the elderly
① They help with daily chores. ② They raise money for lonely elders.
③ They teach elders to use smartphones. ④ They have talks with elders.
A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ②③④
29. Which of the following would Wang Yi most probably agree with
A. Giving is receiving.
B. Many hands make light work.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way.
30. What will the writer probably talk about in the next paragraph
A. The details of the new volunteer training program.
B. The ways to build more communities in Changsha.
C. The history of other volunteer projects in Changsha.

Dear Nancy,
I’m having such an unforgettable time on my student exchange program in Berlin, the capital of Germany. I was a little nervous before I arrived here, but I soon realized there was no reason to worry about.
Berlin is such a special city, where long history and modern life mix beautifully. One moment, you can walk past ancient historic buildings; the next, you see modern tall buildings standing all around. It is not noisy and rushed like many other big cities. Instead, Berlin feels calm, warm and full of magic everywhere you go.
My host family is really wonderful. They try their best to make me feel at home. Knowing I miss Chinese food, my host Grandma learns to cook simple Chinese dishes for me. I get along well with their teenage granddaughter — Mary. She speaks German slowly to help me practice. I can speak German comfortably now and no longer feel worried about my mistakes.
My biggest challenge is learning all the proper table manners and customs. Dining habits differ a lot from ours. For example, you are never supposed to rest your elbows on the dinner table at any point during the meal. Another big difference is that almost all food is eaten with a knife and fork—you hardly ever pick things with your hands, even fruit or bread. Besides that, people here always keep their voices soft during the whole dinner. It was difficult to remember all rules at first, yet I have slowly got used to these German customs.
I will write again to share my school life and wonderful trips later. Wish you a happy school year.
Yours,
Li Hua
