My mother and I were staying in a town near Pompeii. The earth shook those days. That night, I was sleeping when the ground shook very hard. My mother rushed into my room to wake me up. We had to stay outside for the night. My mother was so scared. She didn't shut her eyes for even one second. By six o’ clock the next morning, many buildings were still shaking. We decided to leave the town.
The road was crowded. We were at a place out of town. Just then, shocking things happened. Our coach (四轮大马车) couldn't go straight ahead. It began to move from side to side. The sea moved back suddenly, and many sea animals were left on the sand.
We noticed a very dark cloud over Mount Vesuvius(维苏威火山 ). Soon, the cloud moved down and covered the sea. My mother asked me to continue without her, but I refused to leave her behind. We moved on while the cloud was spreading over the land like a flood. It turned day into night. The air was thick with smoke and ash (火山灰) began to fall in heavy showers. All around us, women were calling, children were crying and men were shouting. People were trying to find their families in the dark.
Thankfully, after a while, the daylight returned! Everything was covered in ash, like the snow in winter. After a night of living between hope and fear, we had no thoughts of things to come.

Smoke fills the sky. The day is as dark as night. Heat makes it hard to breathe. This is the world of a wildfire fighter!
Wildfires are a part of nature. But, as one fireman says, “Fire is not a problem. People living near fire —— that's the problem. ” A wildfire can destroy(毁坏) everything in its way. But there are ways to fight it.
By air
Smokejumpers (空降森林灭火员 ) are often the first firemen to reach a fire. To get closer, they jump from a plane. They are especially important when the area is difficult to walk to. If smokejumpers can't stop a fire in 24 hours, other firemen join them. This second group drops water on the fire from an airplane.
On the land
On the ground, firemen work together to stop the fire. First, one group digs a fire line(防火线). This is a long deep ditch(沟). It is difficult for the fire to cross this line.
Then, while those firemen dig, others start a backfire (回火). They burn the dry grass and leaves between the wildfire and the fire line. When the wildfire comes, there is nothing for it to use as fuel.
Other firemen cut down dead trees. That way the fire can't move to other trees. Firemen try their best to keep people safe. Their job takes hard work, and it takes courage(勇气).
62. When the fireman says, “Fire is not a problem. People living near fire ——that's the problem, ” what does he mean
A. Fire is natural, but it's dangerous to people living near it.

A. Explain why fire is not a problem.
B. Show us how fires destroy everything.
C. Tell us how firemen fight wildfires.
D. Teach us how to be a good fireman.

Being caught in a flood is quite dangerous. Floodwater moves quickly and it is known to pull trees out of the ground, wash away buildings and cause bridges to break down.
Of course, drowning is a danger during a flood, not only because there is so much water and it is moving quickly, but also because of what the water is carrying. Pieces of glass, bricks and metal caught in the moving water can hurt anyone in the floodwater, making it more difficult to swim or walk through water.
Moreover, floods can cause power cut, traffic jams and wide destruction(毁灭). The flood itself isn't the only thing to deal with. The things after the flood can be just as difficult, because it may not be possible to send basic supplies such as food and drinking water to the area.
So how can we protect ourselves during the flood Here are some tips for you:
1. Listen to the government's radio. If you are told to move to a safer place, do so.
2. Never try to walk, swim or drive through floodwaters. It only takes 15centimetres of moving water to knock a person off his or her feet.
3. Stay away from __▲_____ , as they are often knocked down during strong storms and flooding. They can cause water all around to become charged (带电的), leading to people's death because the power isn't cut off.
After the flood, do not drink the floodwater or use it to wash dishes. Drink clean and safe water. If you move from your home, return to it only after the local government has said it is safe to do so.
66. Where is the text most probably from
A. A guidebook. B. A movie poster. C. A science report. D. A local newspaper.
67. Which of the following doesn't make drowning a great danger during a flood
A. There is so much water.
B. The water is moving very fast.
C. Some of the people are not good at swimming.
D. The floodwater carries pieces of glass, bricks and metal.
68. Which of the following can be put in ___ ▲_______
A. fallen trees B. power lines C. hard rocks D. broken houses
69. What do we know about floods according to the text
A. After the flood, it is easy for us to send basic supplies to the area.
B. 15 centimetres of floodwater isn't strong enough to knock people down.
C. If you are a good swimmer, you can swim across the floodwater safely.
D. Floods can cause a lot of problems not only during the flood but also after the flood.
70. What is the purpose of the text
A. To tell us what causes the flood.
B. To tell us how dangerous the flood is.
C. To tell us how to stop floods from happening.
D. To introduce the danger of floods and give advice on how to protect ourselves.
第二节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
It was a dark day in Canada in 1998 when rain began to fall from the sky. However, this wasn't normal rain —— it turned to ice as it fell through the cold air. It rained for six days and as much as ten centimetres of ice collected on roads, trees and power lines.
On 5 January, the people of Montreal woke up to find they had no electricity in their homes. It was very dangerous to walk or drive anywhere. Families had to stay inside and burn wood to keep warm. They expected the power to come back at any time.
However, the ice kept falling. It caused branches and the whole trees to fall down. More power lines fell down and the roads became even more dangerous. By the third day, many families had no food to eat. It was a difficult time. The army sent over 14, 000 soldiers to help.
Finally, after six days, the ice storm stopped, but the trouble wasn't over. The huge amount of ice made the whole area very dangerous. As the ice started to melt(融化), it fell from the roofs of buildings and trees like knives. Most of the power lines were so badly damaged (损坏) that they couldn't be repaired. Some families had no electricity for a whole month. Many homes were damaged and many people, especially farmers, lost their businesses(生计).

Natural disasters happen from time to time, so it's important for us to know what to do when they happen. Here are some safety tips.
When a flood happens, we'd better get to a higher place. We shouldn't walk or swim through the floodwater. If an earthquake happens, we should hide first and run out of the building when the ground stops shaking. We shouldn't stand near a tall building. If we are outside when a wildfire begins, we should find a safe place to stay and call 119. We shouldn't breathe in the smoke, or we will be easily hurt by it. Lastly, we should stay calm.
