In many Asian countries, parents follow their own special customs when a child’s first tooth falls out. For example, they put the tooth from the lower jaw onto the roof of a house in Korea, to get a new tooth. In other Asian countries, such as China and Japan, children follow a similar tradition of throwing lost teeth on the roofs of their houses.
In Mongolia, dogs take the lost baby teeth. People try their best to respect dogs in Mongolian culture and consider dogs as guardians(守护者) of the baby tooth. Tradition says that the new tooth will grow in good health if a good dog eats the baby tooth. So parents in Mongolia always put their child’s lost tooth in a piece of meat and feed it to a dog.
In the West, the tradition is the Tooth Fairy. Many children in Western countries expect the Tooth Fairy to visit every night, after the baby tooth begins to exchange for a tooth. The exact origin(起源) of the Tooth Fairy is a mystery, although the tradition began in England as early as before going to bed. According to the tradition, the child puts the tooth under his or her pillow(枕头) before going to sleep. At night, the Tooth Fairy comes under the pillow, while the child is sleeping, she leaves a small gift or some money.
