In today’s rapidly changing world, environmental protection has become a topic of great concern for people all over the globe. From the smallest individual actions to large-scale international policies, every effort counts in the fight to preserve our planet. Here are some important aspects and ways to contribute to environmental conservation.
Reduce,Reuse and Recycle
One of the most fundamental principles of environmental protection is the “3R” concept.
1. By reducing the amount of waste we generate,we can significantly decrease the pressure on landfills and natural resources. For example, choosing to buy products with minimal packaging can cut down on the amount of waste materials.Reusing items is another great way to save resources.Instead of throwing away old clothes, books,or furniture, you can donate them or find creative ways to repurpose them.2. Recycling is equally important. Many materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal can be recycled into new products, reducing the need for raw material extraction.
Energy Conservation
Energy consumption is a major contributor to environmental problems, especially climate change.3. At home, you can start by switching to energy-efficient light bulbs, unplugging electronic devices when they are not in use,and adjusting the thermostat to a more energy-saving setting. In the workplace, encouraging the use of natural light and proper insulation(隔热材料) can also make a big difference.Additionally, consider using public transport, carpooling(拼车),cycling, or walking instead of driving alone. This not only reduces your carbon footprint but also helps to ease traffic congestion.
Protecting Biodiversity
Biodiversity is essential for the stability and health of our ecosystems.4. When we destroy habitats, many species are at risk of extinction, which can have far-reaching consequences for the entire planet. To protect biodiversity,we can support conservation organisations that work to preserve natural habitats and endangered species.Planting native trees and plants in our gardens can also provide habitats for local wildlife.Avoiding the use of pesticides and herbicides in our gardens helps to protect beneficial insects and other small animals.
Educating Others
Education plays a crucial role in environmental protection.5. By raising awareness about environmental issues,we can inspire more people to take action. You can start by educating your family and friends about simple ways to be more environmentally friendly.Schools and communities can also organise environmental education programmes to teach students and residents about the importance of protecting the environment and the actions they can take.
A.This concept helps us to make better use of resources and minimize waste.
B.We should try to conserve energy in our daily lives as much as possible.
C.Many species are facing extinction due to human activities.
D.People need to understand the impact of their actions on the environment.
E.And recycling centers play a key role in this process.
F.We should focus on economic development at all costs.
G.These actions can have a positive impact on the environment in the long run.

People may form inaccurate impressions about us from our social media posts, according to a find of Cornell University’s research, which is the first to examine perceptions of our personalities based on online posts.
An analysis of online status updates found great difference between how viewers saw the authors across a range of personality traits (个人特质) and the authors’ self-perceptions.
Viewers rated the Internet users as having lower self-esteem and being more self-revealing than the users rated themselves.Status updates containing photos, videos or links in addition to text facilitated more accurate assessments than those with just text, the researchers found.
Overall, the study illustrates the dynamic process by which a cyber audience tries to make sense of who we are from isolated fragments (碎片) of shared information, jointly constructing our digital identity.
“The impression people form about us on social media based on what we post can differ from the way we view ourselves.” said Wang,a professor of psychology and director of the Culture & Cognition Lab.“A mismatch between who we are and how people perceive us could influence our ability to feel connected online and the benefits of engaging in social media interaction.”
The Cornell researchers believe their study is the first to investigate audience perceptions of social media users through their posts. On platforms, users often share fragmentary personal narratives while interacting with “friends” they may know only a little or sometimes not at all.
Wang said the findings could help developers design interfaces (界面) that allow people to express themselves most authentically.
“If people’s view of us is very different from who we actually are,or how we would like to be perceived,” Wang said,“it could harm our social life and well-being.”

There has been growing concern about “digital dementia”—the idea that excessive reliance on smartphones and the Internet harms cognitive (认知的) abilities. However, research suggests that for adults aged 50 and above, these technologies may actually have the opposite effect.A comprehensive analysis found that those who frequently used smartphones, computers, and the Internet were less likely to experience cognitive decline compared to those who used them less.
Jared Benge of University of Texas at Austin and his team studied the daily use of digital technologies among adults aged 50 and above. Most of the studies were conducted in Europe or North America, but there were studies from other regions, says Benge.“The effects seem to be fairly consistent.”
There are three key mechanisms that explain this effect, says Benge.First, digital activities are more cognitively engaging than passive ones like watching TV.Second, digital technology strengthens social connections, for instance, video calls.Third, digital tools like navigation applications help older adults maintain independence, ensuring they don’t get lost even if their way-finding abilities decline, for example.
The main weakness is that the studies in the analysis relied on people self-reporting how much they used smartphones, computers or the Internet. In the future, technologies such as screen-time monitoring can provide objective measures.Benge also points out that people in these studies didn’t gain access to smartphones or Internet when they were children.“Does this play out for digital natives This is a snapshot that’s encouraging, but the story is not done being told.”
While the results of the meta-analysis are inconclusive, they suggest that long-term technology use can be beneficial to the brain and cognition, says neuroscientist Dean Burnett.“This clearly challenges the common quick judgment that ‘technology is always bad’ in terms of brain and mental health.”

It was May 1945 when what would become one of America’s most common home-cooking techniques first entered the English vocabulary. In her cookbook,How to Cook and Eat in Chinese,Chinese immigrant Chao Yang Buwei described a process common in China,in which cooks would cut meat and vegetables into small pieces and then tumble (翻) them rapidly together over heat.“The Chinese term for the technique,ch’ao,cannot be accurately translated into English,” Chao decided,“We shall call it ‘stir-fry’ for short.” The term has since taken on a life of its own.Nowadays,stir-frying isn’t just a method—“stir-fry” has become its own category of recipe.
Chao came to cooking unexpectedly. She moved to America with her husband in 1921 after her husband was offered a job at Harvard.Bored at home and only able to speak a little English, she turned to cooking dishes that reminded her of China. She eventually agreed when a friend earnestly persuaded her to write a cookbook, which was then translated by Chao’s daughter and polished up by her linguist husband.
Her cookbook succeeded, going into multiple printings by 1945.English-language Chinese cookbooks had been published as far back as 1911 in America, but Chao’s was the first that refused to westernise Chinese cooking.“I’ll show you how to cook crab dishes with real crabs,” Chao told readers in a passage where she forbade them from using sea crabs in place of the freshwater variety.Using the former, she reasoned, would result in “a caricature (夸张的描述) of the Chinese dish”.During Chao’s era,it might have been easier for foreign cooks in America to please the American tastes with substitutions. She wore her Chinese heritage with pride. She didn’t follow suit.
Chao pioneered a new cooking method in America.Unwilling to compromise, she was a true visionary.Sadly, she died in 1981.

Bonding Over Dumplings Online
In October, our Students’ Union held an online culture café to allow our schoolmates to learn how to make Chinese dumplings together. The international group brought together members from China,India,Malaysia,Indonesia and Australia.1.
After introducing the process of wrapping dumplings,we wrapped the meat filling into the centre of the dumplings. Some foreign schoolmates were quite confused because they pressed the edges with the palms of their hands.2. To make a beautiful dumpling,it’s important to pinch(捏住) its edges a little tighter and push the sides towards the centre to seal them to guarantee that the fillings will not fall out while cooking.
One schoolmate from Australia said she never knew how much fun it was to make dumplings before, and she was curious about why dumplings are so popular with the Chinese.3. When I was a kid,my grandma told me the underlying(潜在的)culture of dumplings is its inclusiveness and diversity.Different types of fillings suit different eating preferences for Chinese people. Thus, dumplings will come with a variety of fillings, such as pork and cabbage, chicken and mushroom, shrimp and vegetarian fillings.4. No matter what types of fillings are in dumplings, people focus more on their symbolism and expectations.
5. Not only did we have an enjoyable discussion about wrapping dumplings, but we also conveyed a positive and inclusive attitude towards cultural diversity. It was a positive experience, and the foreign schoolmates got a better understanding of Chinese food and Chinese culture.
A.The dumplings were all delicious.
B.The online session was meaningful.
C.However,some foreign schoolmates learnt quickly.
D.There is no “one standard filling” for all types of dumplings.
E.Born in a traditional Chinese family,I shared my story with her.
F.Therefore,we taught our schoolmates step by step.

Ⅱ.七选五
(2025·江苏苏州模拟)
In today’s rapidly changing world, environmental protection has become a topic of great concern for people all over the globe. From the smallest individual actions to large-scale international policies, every effort counts in the fight to preserve our planet. Here are some important aspects and ways to contribute to environmental conservation.
Reduce,Reuse and Recycle
One of the most fundamental principles of environmental protection is the “3R” concept.1. By reducing the amount of waste we generate,we can significantly decrease the pressure on landfills and natural resources. For example, choosing to buy products with minimal packaging can cut down on the amount of waste materials.Reusing items is another great way to save resources. Instead of throwing away old clothes, books,or furniture, you can donate them or find creative ways to repurpose them.2.

题组训练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
In a world of music streaming services, access to almost any song is just a few clicks away.Yet,the live performance lives on.People still fill sweaty basements, muddy fields and gilded concert halls to hear their favourite musicians play. And now neuroscientists might know why—live music engages the brain’s emotion centres more than its recorded counterpart.
Concerts are immersive (沉浸式的) social experiences in which people listen to and feel the music together through crescendos, key changes and rhythmic drops. Moreover, they are dynamic — artists can adapt their playing according to the crowd’s reactions.
It was this last difference that led neuroscientists, based at the Universities of Zurich and Oslo,to study the brain responses of people listening to music. In the “live” experiment, participants lay in an MRI scanner listening to the music through earphones, while a pianist was positioned outside the room. The pianist was shown the participant’s real-time brain activity as a form of feedback. In the recorded condition, participants listened to pre-recorded versions of the same tunes.
The scientists were interested in how live music affected the areas of the brain responsible for processing emotions, particularly the amygdala (杏仁体),an area deep inside the brain. The results, published in a journal, revealed that live music had a significantly greater emotional impact. Whether the music conveyed happiness or sadness, dynamic live performances led to increased activity not only in the amygdala but also other parts of the brain’s emotion processing network. The researchers also found that participants’ brain activity tracked the acoustic (声学的) features of the music, like tempo and pitch, far more closely when it was played live.
While the study didn’t fully recreate the live concert experience, the findings suggest that artists’ ability to adjust their performance in real time contributes to the emotional resonance (共鸣) of live music. Some musical acts attempt to create a virtual concert,an immersive pre-recorded VR concert, but without artists’ capacity to read audience’s mood and respond accordingly,it will never quite match the real thing.
( )1.Why do people attend live shows despite music streaming services
A.Because they prefer being with friends at a concert.
B.Because they enjoy the process of finding popular music.
C.Because they intend to meet their favourite musicians in person.
D.Because they value the emotional connections live music brings.
( )2.What is the role the pianist played in the “live” experiment
A.To observe the participants’ brain activity as feedback.
B.To compare the effectiveness of live performances and recorded ones.
C.To provide live accompaniment to participants inside the MRI scanner.
D.To demonstrate their ability to read and respond to the audience’s mood.
( )3.What did the study published in a journal find about the impact of live music on the brain
A.Live music affected only the amygdala of the brain.
B.The brain responded more intensely to acoustic features of live music.
C.Live music had a reduced emotional impact compared to recorded music.
D.The participants’ brain activity was especially sensitive to dynamic music.
( )4.What does the author suggest by mentioning a virtual concert in the last paragraph
A.It lacks artists’ response based on audience’s feedback.
B.It matches the sound quality of live performances.
C.It greatly stirs up the audience’s emotional response.
D.It fails to create a perfect performing atmosphere.

My first guitar lesson at age 10 left my fingers sore and my mind confused, yet I felt mysteriously drawn to this instrument.Though practice left my skin raw and my arms aching, the forming calluses became marks of honour.Gradually, the guitar transformed from a painful challenge to a trusted friend. It became my voice when words failed—helping me share feelings I couldn’t express aloud.
The guitar also connected me to others. One summer,my band performed at hospitals and nursing homes.Watching sick children dance and elderly listeners smile taught me the healing power of music. While travelling abroad,I communicated with foreign musicians through melodies when language barriers existed—our guitars built bridges where words couldn’t.
Each guitar holds a chapter of my life story. The classical guitar with warm tones witnessed my teenage growth. The bold 12-string guitar roared through my adventurous youth. My first electric guitar, chosen with my father decades ago, still carries the excitement of our bonding moment.Together, they are like a living diary of my journey. In tough times, the guitar comforted me.When my mother was ill, playing it eased my fears. It celebrated life’s joys too—winning my wife’s heart with love songs, entertaining my dancing children, and now listening to my son practise late at night—a continuation of our musical story.
I owe this lifelong passion to my mother’s wisdom. When I nearly quitted, she insisted,“True treasures demand effort.” She taught me that instruments aren’t mere objects—they’re mirrors of the soul, revealing our best selves.Everyone deserves to find their guitar, whether it’s a paintbrush,a soccer ball,or a notebook. What matters is how it helps us grow, connect, and discover life’s beautiful harmony.
Fifty years later,I realise the guitar didn’t just teach me music — it shaped who I am.Its strings still create the soundtrack of my life, reminding me that passion and determination can turn struggles into wonderful memories.
( )5.What did the rough skin on the author’s fingertips symbolise
A.Mental pains from strict training. B.Pride in overcoming difficulties.
C.Medical marks for finger injuries. D.Confusion about guitar techniques.
( )6.What does the electric guitar mean to the author
A.It comforted his father. B.It entertained elderly listeners.
C.It builds up his family ties. D.It stands for his exciting youth.
( )7.What does the author advise everyone to do in Paragraph 4
A.Take a painting course. B.Respect your mother’s wisdom.
C.Try less demanding instrument. D.Discover a life-shaping tool.
( )8.What can we learn from the author’s guitar journey
A.Passion transforms pains into treasures.
B.Enthusiasm facilitates guitar techniques.
C.Childhood hobbies shape career choices.
D.Mastering an instrument guarantees success.

Mary watched as students crowded around a notice announcing that the school’s radio station was looking for a second host.Butterflies filled her stomach—she had always dreamt of being a campus radio host.
The radio station was a big deal—it aired music, school announcements, and entertaining shows that everyone tuned in to during lunch breaks.Olivia, the current host, was confident and talented, earning widespread admiration. In contrast,Mary was naturally shy,and speaking in front of others made her nervous.Still, she decided to give it a try, even when a classmate remarked,“You You can barely read aloud in class without stumbling (磕磕绊绊)!”
Not discouraged,Mary practised every evening by reading aloud from her textbooks. At first, she stumbled over her words, but gradually her reading grew smoother and her pronunciation clearer. She even borrowed books on public speaking from the library to learn vocal techniques. While her classmates chatted and laughed, she quietly absorbed every detail, determined to improve her skills.
The day of the interview finally arrived.Holding the cold microphone,Mary felt her hands grow sweaty. She read the required texts perfectly—having rehearsed (排练) thousands of times—but she struggled during the improvised (即兴的) part.
“Sir,I’ve been practising for months, and I’m willing to work hard to learn,” she said earnestly.
Mr Carter smiled gently and said,“I appreciate your determination and your excellent reading skills. But during a live broadcast, anything can happen, and you need to draw your audience’s attention with genuine emotion rather than simply reading from a script.”
That day,no one passed the interview—everyone left except Mary.Lost in thought, she realised,“The problem isn’t with my pronunciation or reading...” It suddenly struck her that she could join the radio team in a supporting role to learn what it truly takes to be a host.

UNIT 1 CULTURAL HERITAGE

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·山东高三一模)
The building of Sanxingdui Museum is crowded with visitors, many of whom were drawn to a bronze figure with a twisted head.Tourists stop to admire the remarkable artifact (手工艺品),which was unearthed by archaeologist Xu.After graduating from Peking University,Xu has been working for Sichuan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, leading the excavation of Pit No 4 where the statue was found. The young man emphasises that archaeological excavation is arduous (艰难的),yet the thrill of discovering new relics remains unforgettable.
To increase awareness of cultural heritage diversity,18 April has been set by UNESCO as the International Day for Monuments and Sites.Like Xu,many young Chinese people are playing significant roles in excavating, exploring, protecting and promoting cultural relics.Born in 1992,Zhang has served as a guide at Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum for over 10 years. He sets himself apart from other guides by incorporating techniques from traditional Chinese comedy xiangsheng,or crosstalk, into his explanations. He views his role as not just a job but a legacy, being the third generation in his family to work with the Terracotta Warriors. His grandfather was among the museum’s founding builders while his uncle is a professor in an archaeological team based there. Now,it’s Zhang’s turn to become a storyteller of the Terracotta Warriors.
Wu,a Chinese blogger born in the 1990s,offers people dynamic insights into the beauty of Chinese civilisation through his acclaimed (受到高度赞扬的) “national cultural relics map” which has gone viral online.Wu has marked a great number of cultural heritage locations, including temples, ancient pagodas, traditional residences, bridges and towers on the dynamic map.Dots of varying colours represent different levels of cultural heritage protection and museum grades.Together, they form “the most distinct colours” on our land,Wu says.Looking ahead,Wu aims to refine and update the map based on suggestions from network users, desiring to eventually share the valuable resource with other history and culture enthusiasts.

Historical heritage is human beings’ wisdom.Historical relics, however,as time goes by,suffer different degrees of damage.People used to protect cultural relics by manual work— photographing and rubbing (拓印) techniques.Although this method can keep the basic information, many vital details are still ignored.
Luckily,3D digitalisation has been proved to be the most popular technology in the field of cultural heritage. The 3D digital technology can be used for data archiving (存档),displaying as well as restoration.
3D scanning (扫描) technology features fast measurement speed and accurate capturing (绘制) capacity. It’s good at collecting enough and accurate 3D data from different perspectives, which is beneficial to the restoration of historical relics when they suffer accidental damage.Experts can also virtually restore the heritage through the computer, and finish assistant research by means of accurate 3D models.
For historical relics’ protection,nevertheless,3D scanning isn’t the only way put into use.3D printing also contributes to displaying historical relics. It provides people with more chances to get to know historical relics and better understand human beings’ history.
A local museum ever unearthed a collection of cultural relics. One of the most urgent issues for archaeologists was data archiving. So they conducted 3D scanning immediately on these relics by 3D scanner. This handheld 3D laser scanner was equipped with the world’s leading-edge technologies and brought great convenience for further restoration and research.
To avoid any damage, this museum combined with 3D printing technology based on 3D data to reproduce 1∶1 3D models of cultural relics for exhibition, which aimed to make more people get close to history and pass on the precious historical heritage.
Many thousand-year cultural treasures have gradually disappeared from our sight due to technical problems.However,3D scanning and 3D printing technologies provide very effective 3D solutions for historical relic display and protection.

It was May 1945 when what would become one of America’s most common home-cooking techniques first entered the English vocabulary. In her cookbook,How to Cook and Eat in Chinese, Chinese immigrant Chao Yang Buwei described a process common in China,in which cooks would cut meat and vegetables into small pieces and then tumble (翻) them rapidly together over heat.“The Chinese term for the technique,ch’ao,cannot be accurately translated into English,” Chao decided,“We shall call it ‘stir-fry’ for short.” The term has since taken on a life of its own.Nowadays,stir-frying isn’t just a method—“stir-fry” has become its own category of recipe.
( )4.What can be learnt about “ch’ao”
A.It is a recognised cooking method now.
B.It was accurately translated into “stir-fry” by Chao.
C.It means tumbling many big pieces of ingredients over heat.
D.It was a common term already used in American cooking before 1945.
( )5.Why did Chao turn to traditional Chinese cooking when moving to America
A.She happened to take an interest in cooking.
B.She didn’t know any American way of cooking.
C.She was bored to stay at home only to learn English.
D.She missed her homeland and her country’s cuisine.
( )6.What is special about Chao’s cookbook
A.It was the first to emphasise the use of freshwater crabs over sea crabs.
B.It was the most successful cookbook published on Chinese cooking.
C.It was the first to be faithful to real Chinese cooking and recipes.
D.It tried to please the American tastes as other similar cookbooks.
( )7.Which of the following best describes Chao
A.Academic and unfailingly helpful. B.Pioneering and culturally proud.
C.Recognised and linguistically talented. D.Adaptable and technically achieved.

The results, published in a journal, revealed that live music had a significantly greater emotional impact.Whether the music conveyed happiness or sadness, dynamic live performances led to increased activity not only in the amygdala but also other parts of the brain’s emotion processing network.

( )4.What may your online posts lead to according to the research
A.Dynamic digital identity. B.Viewer’s misjudgment of you.
C.Less social media interaction. D.Limited social perception.
( )5.Which of the following will least reveal your personality

A.The author facilitates status updates.
B.The author constructs the personal traits.
C.The viewer rates the frequency of the posts.
D.The viewer assesses partial shared information.

( )8.What is the main finding of the research
A.Smartphone use leads to memory loss in seniors.
B.Internet browsing prevents all forms of dementia.
C.Regular tech use shows cognitive benefits for the elderly.
D.Video games are better than social media for brain health.
( )9.What is the main focus of the research
A.Social media habits in teenagers. B.Daily use of digital technologies.

( )10.How might digital technology help older adults stay independent according to Benge
A.By encouraging more self-reporting.
B.By giving directions and locations.
C.By discouraging social interactions.
D.By doing all their daily tasks automatically.
( )11.What is Dean Burnett’s attitude towards the research findings
A.Dismissive. B.Uncertain. C.Supportive. D.Critical.
