(2025·河南二模)
My father’s thrift(节俭) philosophy shaped my youth.Unlike peers receiving pocket money,I never got a penny—not from cruelty, but to build self-reliance.Each morning,he’d note,“Mrs Wilson needs her garden weeded; Mr Carter requires helping sort bottles.” I earned coins through seasonal work in the neighborhood: sweeping leaves, shoveling snow and babysitting.
Savings filled the tin under my bed,its weight showing my growing pride.Though he occasionally borrowed for emergencies (a flat tire or a medical bill),repayment was exact and timely. When I lost two months’ earnings in a failed lemonade business, his only words were,“Live and learn.” At twelve,I considered this cruel; at thirty,I value its wisdom—true lessons grow through doing.
Modern thrift education focuses on saving, but ignores its key point: earning.Father believed“earned coins teach value; given coins generate greed”—a truth wealthy families overlook while advocating thrift.By delivering papers at dawn and mowing lawns at dusk,I learned that true thrift is a triad (三位一体)—earn through labor, save with intention, spend with care. This trio, unteachable in classrooms, roots in blistered (满是水泡的) hands and difficult situations.
Locally, supermarkets throw away outdated bread (still eatable) as shelters beg for donations.Witnessing global contrasts inspires my resolve: 1.3 billion tons of food go bad annually—enough to feed all the hungry—while 800 million starve. This phenomenon fuels my Food Rescue Project—redirecting bakery remains to food banks and training youth to reuse deserted furniture for schools.Through such acts, thrift becomes social justice. As Father said,“Earning teaches respect for resources.” In our wasteful era, thrift transforms from personal discipline to collective duty.
( )1.Why did the author work for neighbors during his youth
A.To raise fund for his project.
B.To help neighbors in need.
C.To meet his father’s principle.
D.To solve weight problems.
( )2.What does the author now think about his father’s words “Live and learn.”
A.A plus. B.A burden.
C.A dilemma. D.A cruelty.
( )3.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.The role of true thrift.
B.The examples of true thrift.
C.The core of true thrift.
D.The challenges of true thrift.
( )4.Why does the author mention the global food waste data
A.To evaluate modern school systems.
B.To stress thrift’s application in society.
C.To urge stricter laws against food waste.
D.To compare different consumption habits.

Clair Hughes first began to research money-saving ideas to get out of her £3,500 student overdraft (透支额).The shopper started surfing the Internet for discount coupons (优惠券) and cut price offers.Revealing how she seldom pays full price for an item,Ms Hughes says,“Discounts are always there; it’s just a matter of being organised. Before starting this,I thought it’d be much work, but now I’m so used to this lifestyle that it’s automatic to me.I must have easily saved over £15,000.”
Ms Hughes first focused on saving money back in 2010,when she moved in with her partner, Shane Byrne,a phone company trainer. After turning to the web for advice, she tried out a few clever money-saving tricks like switching her overdraft to a zero-interest account. Then, several years later, she came across an online community for “couponers” and decided to give it a go.
She started spending hours surfing the web for coupons, printing them all out to take with her whenever she went shopping.Over the years, she has managed to get some impressive catches. Once, two lamps worth £140 cost her just £35.
Two years ago,Ms Hughes also began using cashback apps where you are given money back on items ranging from beers to toiletries. After each shop, she uploads pictures of her receipts, which are then scanned, and money is given back on certain items.
Among her other top money-saving tips,Ms Hughes recommends taking part in paid online surveys, which have earned her hundreds in discount coupons. She says,“I’ve heard a lot about collecting other people’s abandoned receipts from shopping trolleys to check for missed discounts.I can’t believe how much coupons and cashback apps have helped me.The community does benefit me a lot. There will always be someone on hand to explain how it works.”
( )5.What does saving money mean to Clair Hughes
A.It’s part of her daily life.
B.It makes her shop less.
C.It’s a way to leave school.
D.It keeps her work organised.
( )6.What can we know about Clair Hughes

D.Hughes’ difficulty in saving money.
( )8.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the passage

If you have ever added an extra item to your cart just to get free shipping, you have fallen victim to what is known as “spaving”,defined as the act of “spending more to save more”.1. Here are some tips and tricks you might turn to next time you are tempted to spend a little more just to secure some savings.
Take a second to do the math. The language of advertising may lead you to believe you are about to get a great deal.2. For example, for some “buy more, save more” deals, the percent discount is often the same. However, the original price of a product acts as an anchor, making the discount appear more valuable than it actually is.By doing the math, you’ll quickly realize that the savings aren’t as significant as they seem.
3. You won’t feel the impulse to shop sales if you don’t know about them.Consider taking yourself off the email lists from favorite brands so you are not getting informed every time a special is happening.Similarly, don’t walk into a store if you know there is a sale going on.
Stay focused on your shopping list. You can avoid adding extra items to your cart if you have a shopping list in hand that you’ve created ahead of time.4. Keep a full list of products that you intend to buy at some point and refer to it when you come across a sale.
Pause before purchasing.5. Carry out a 24-hour waiting period before making a purchase as well as shop around, compare prices or even look for a renewed option. This gives you time to ensure you don’t already own the item or something similar, helping to avoid unnecessary repetition.
A.Turn off sales alerts.
B.Spave with a purpose.
C.But the numbers tell a different story.
D.But consider all the potential ways to save the money.
E.It can also help you to use sales more to your advantage.
F.Just take a moment to decide whether the buy is needed or not.
G.To avoid such a trap,it matters quite a lot to interrupt the urge.

During space missions, astronauts can experience a loss of some of the inner structural support in their bones. For trips in space lasting at least six months, that loss is equal to about 20 years of aging.Luckily,a new study finds a year back on Earth rebuilds half of the strength lost in the affected bones.
Exercise scientist Leigh Gabel was part of a team that tracked 17 astronauts, each of whom had spent four to seven months in space. The team measured the 3-D structure of bones. They focused on the structure of the tibia (胫骨) and the lower-arm bone. The researchers took images of the bones 3 times—before spaceflight and again six months and one year later when the astronauts returned home from space. From these pictures,Gabel’s team calculated an astronaut’s bone strength and density (密度) at each of those times.
What did they find through comparison of the pictures Astronauts in space for less than six months regained their preflight bone strength after a year back on Earth. But those who stayed in space longer suffered permanent bone loss in their tibias. That loss was equal to a decade of aging. The lower-arm bones showed almost no loss. That was likely because these aren’t weight-bearing bones on Earth,Gabel explains. In fact, those arms can get a bigger workout in space than on Earth as astronauts use them to move around their craft by pushing off handles and doors.
“Increasing weight-lifting exercises in space could help alleviate (缓解) bone loss in the legs,” says Steven Boyd, also an exercise scientist.
“With longer spaceflights,we can expect bigger bone loss—and probably a bigger problem with recovery,” says physiologist Laurence Vico.“Space agencies should also consider other bone health measures, such as nutrition,to reduce bone loss and increase bone formation.”

At a crop breeding (培育) centre in Shanghai, researchers have successfully harvested rice that was grown from seeds initially bred on China’s space station,Tiangong. The rice plants have completed a full growth cycle on Earth, maturing after more than 100 days since planting.
This space-to-ground experiment began with 6 rice seeds sent into orbit in 2022.Taikonauts onboard Tiangong bred these seeds into 59,which they returned to Earth.Researchers then selected high-quality seeds, growing them under controlled climate conditions and producing around 10,000 new seeds.
Ms Zheng,a lead researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Centre, shared that the team’s findings suggest space-bred seeds can reproduce effectively on Earth, suggesting potential for future space agriculture.Zheng highlighted that the space-bred rice possesses unique traits, such as a higher sugar content, with sugar levels estimated to be five to six times higher than standard rice. The space-bred rice also shows a slight increase in protein content.“That means space-bred rice tastes sweeter and has more energy,” she added.
Space breeding, the method used in this experiment, exposes seeds to space radiation and microgravity, generating gene mutations (基因突变).These mutations are carefully assessed upon the seeds’ return to Earth, sometimes resulting in advantageous traits like shorter growth times, improved disease resistance, and higher output.Mr Zhao,an expert in China Academy of Space Technology, emphasized the safety of space-bred food, explaining that unlike genetically modified crops,space-bred seeds naturally mutate without introducing foreign genes. However, the space-bred rice has fewer leaves, which complicates close planting.Researchers are planning further studies to understand these leaf traits and explore possible genetic changes.
The Tiangong rice experiment marked a milestone for crop science,as it was the first time that rice had completed a full life cycle—from seed germination (发芽) to reproduction—in orbit.

Planetary geoarchaeology (地质考古学),the study of how cultural and natural processes on Earth’s moon,on Mars, and throughout the solar system may be changing, preserving,or erasing the material record of space exploration, has been proposed by two researchers from the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas and their colleagues as a new scientific subfield.
“Until recently,we might consider the material left behind during the space race of the mid-20th century as relatively safe,”said Mr Holcomb,a researcher at the Kansas Geological Survey.“However, the material record that currently exists on the moon is rapidly becoming at risk of being destroyed if proper attention isn’t paid during the new space era.”
Applying geoarchaeological tools and methods to the movement of people into space and the solar system is a natural extension of the study of human migration on Earth, the focus of an archaeological research program directed by Holcomb’s co-author,Mr Mandel.
How planetary geoarchaeologists will determine whether an item is worth preserving is an open question.“We feel that all material currently existing on extraterrestrial (地球外的) surfaces is space heritage and worthy of protection,”Holcomb said.“However, some sites, such as the very first footprints on the moon represent the material footprint of a long history of migration.”Beyond those“firsts”,making decisions on a case-by-case basis will be necessary to sort through the tens of thousands of pieces of debris (残骸) now in orbit or dropped across the surfaces of the moon and Mars, which many people refer to as “trash” but Holcomb and his colleagues see as heritage.
Holcomb thinks geoarchaeologists ought to be a part of upcoming space missions to ensure the security and preservation of space history. As for being part of a space mission himself,“I’ll leave that to other geoarchaeologists,” Holcomb said.“There’s plenty to do down here, but I do hope to see an archaeologist in space before it’s all over.”

Italy is the home of filled pasta, and ravioli is one of its most famous offerings.Ravioli can be packed with anything from meat to cheese to vegetables,or any combination thereof. If the processed canned or bagged varieties familiar to college students make up your only impression of ravioli, change that as soon as possible, preferably with a trip to Rome.
Sichuan spicy wonton
The Sichuan spicy wonton,or Chaoshou, comes to the table in spicy chili oil flavoured with Sichuan pepper. The Chaoshou is boiled, and the very best ones are so slippery that they’re nearly impossible to pick up with chopsticks. The combination of tasty meat, smooth wonton skin and tongue-numbing oil, makes for the most pleasant runny nose you’ve ever had.
Siomay
Siomay,a steamed fish dumpling,is closely related to the Chinese dim sum snack, shumai.
Think of Siomay as the Indonesian street food version of shumai, which is traditionally found in Chinese dim sum restaurants.Adopted from Chinese Indonesian cuisine, the most popular variant of Siomay is found in Bandung. The best way to sample these dumplings is from a street seller carrying a steamer on his bicycle.

Under the soft light of a lamp,Miss Ruan cautiously carves a child’s face onto an egg gourd (葫芦) with masterful precision. With each carving, she clears away the shavings, ensuring that every detail is a faithful version of her initial drawing.Ruan has spent over a decade perfecting her craft, which has been passed down through four generations of her family, lasting more than 80 years. The years of dedicated carving have toughened her right hand, making it larger and rougher than her left—a witness to her commitment to the art.
Carving is a particularly respected art in Lanzhou, where the technique has developed quickly and strongly for over a thousand years.Favoring the thin-skinned egg gourds native to the region, the art form demands such a skill that the slightest misstep can damage the entire piece, especially for micro-carving on the tiny,egg-sized local gourds, which represents the peak of Lanzhou’s gourd carving skill.Yet,unlike her ancestors who favored complexity,Ruan prefers the simplicity of drawing, reflecting her unique style and cultural philosophy.
“To truly preserve and stimulate traditional techniques, they must be integrated into everyday life, allowing people to enjoy their favorite art in their homes, not just in galleries,”she explained.Initially,Ruan struggled to sustain the weight of her family’s craft, but the popularity of the game “Travel Frog” among young people inspired her to create a utopian (乌托邦) world with the frog’s image, engaging more young people.
As culture becomes a part of daily life and gains public appreciation,an increasing number of people are learning Lanzhou gourd carving from Ruan.Since the beginning of this year, she has welcomed over 1,000 visitors per week for study tours.Ruan is now learning to use social media to connect with the younger generation.“Culture is a collective effort,” she said.

Sewing is frequently seen as an enjoyable and artistic activity. However, have you ever taken a moment to consider that for countless individuals worldwide,a sewing machine goes beyond its role as merely a tool, instead frequently serving as their crucial source of income
When Margaret Jankowski discovered this, she chose to establish The Sewing Machine Project,an organization dedicated to collecting donated sewing machines and distributing them in remote areas.Additionally, the organization seeks to assist communities in Detroit and New Orleans.
After a tsunami struck Sri Lanka,Margaret was profoundly affected by the tale of a specific woman. The disaster ruined the woman’s village, resulting in her losing everything, including her sewing machine, which had been her primary means of earning a living.Moved by this story,Margaret made the decision to gather used sewing machines and ship them to Sri Lanka. After she announced her idea on a local news program, donations of sewing machines began pouring in from the community.
The Sewing Machine Project covers a basic yet necessary need of many impoverished people around the world. For them, sewing can be a tool for survival.Whether in a factory or at home,a sewing machine can be the door to brighter financial opportunities.A sewing machine can also enable many to preserve their cultural identity. After Hurricane Katrina occurred in 2005,a community of New Orleans that wears skillfully-made suits for their own traditional festival lost many of their sewing machines.Since then, the non-profit organization has distributed hundreds of machines among the creators of the costumes, helping them maintain their tradition as well as their income.

One day,my nine-year-old younger brother Jeff came home from school earlier than me.
When I returned home,I found he was shouting at our mum—who was busy cooking in the kitchen—about the clothes that needed washing.
“Mum,why haven’t you washed my clothes ” he asked, pointing at the dirty clothes he had taken off two days before.“I want to wear them tomorrow,” Jeff added. However, the clothes that he was wearing still looked clean.“Dear,I’ll wash it after cooking,” Mum told Jeff, looking anxious and upset.Without replying,Jeff unhappily went to his bedroom and closed the door, with a long face.
I was shocked about Jeff’s bad behaviour towards Mum.How unsympathetic he was! Our washing machine had been out of order for two months.Because our parents were on a tight budget and were too busy, they still didn’t buy a new one.So recently our family had to wash our clothes by hand, which was time-wasting and truly hard work.
Just when I decided to scold my little brother,Dad came home from work, and I told him what had happened.
Dad was upset and felt sorry for Mum,knowing how hard she worked all day.She was a saleswoman in a supermarket and did all she could to support our family.Often,Dad tried to help with some of the housework. He didn’t want Mum to have too much burden, knowing her heavy work as a saleswoman.I also tried to spare time to help do housework, sharing some of the family burden. However,Jeff was a lazy and naughty boy,who hardly did housework.
Now,our dad decided it was high time to teach him a lesson.“Jeff, come here,” Dad called out.“I have some good news for you.” Jeff immediately came and asked excitedly,“What,Dad ” “Your mum and I are too busy recently.Tonight,I want you to wash your own clothes,” Dad smiled.Jeff immediately refused, shaking his head.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
“Then, you won’t get your pocket money next week.I’m serious,” Dad replied.

“Then, you won’t get your pocket money next week.I’m serious,” Dad replied.Jeff’s face turned pale at Dad’s stern words. He bit his lip,his eyes filled with disbelief and panic. For a few seconds,he just stood there frozen, unable to believe that his favourite pocket money was in danger. Then,a sense of determination seemed to dawn on him as he slowly bent down to pick up the dirty clothes. With a heavy heart and a reluctant pace,he headed towards the washbasin, murmuring under his breath,“I’ll do it myself.”
At 9 pm,Jeff was still struggling to rinse (漂洗) the clothes, realising the work wasn’t easy at all.His hands were red and sore and he felt an exhaustion he had never experienced before.Mum and Dad walked over and saw his efforts.Mum gently patted his head and said,“Dear, now you know how hard it is for us.” Jeff nodded, his eyes downcast and filled with remorse.“I’m sorry,Mum and Dad.I was so selfish and didn’t understand your efforts.I’ll change.” From that day on,Jeff started to help with the housework more often, becoming a more understanding and responsible boy.

( )1.Why did Gabel’s team take pictures at different times
A.To offer evidence for their predictions.
B.To show their respect for the astronauts.
C.To compare the changes in the astronauts’ bones.
D.To find out the proper length of staying in space for astronauts.
( )2.Which of the following may Gabel agree with
A.A spaceflight in less than half a year does no harm to astronauts.
B.Astronauts coming back from a spaceflight look much older.
C.Astronauts can avoid bone loss through doing enough exercise.
D.There is almost no difference in the astronauts’ lower-arm bones.
( )3.What can we conclude from this text
A.People on Earth never suffer bone loss.
B.The finding of the new study is good news for astronauts.
C.The 17 astronauts knew the bone loss before their spaceflights.
D.Astronauts can regain their bone strength as soon as they return to Earth.

( )4.What can we know about the space-to-ground experiment
A.Seeds grown in orbit promise higher quality.
B.Seeds bred in space were further grown successfully on Earth.

“Until recently,we might consider the material left behind during the space race of the mid-20th century as relatively safe,” said Mr Holcomb,a researcher at the Kansas Geological Survey.“However, the material record that currently exists on the moon is rapidly becoming at risk of being destroyed if proper attention isn’t paid during the new space era.”
Applying geoarchaeological tools and methods to the movement of people into space and the solar system is a natural extension of the study of human migration on Earth, the focus of an archaeological research program directed by Holcomb’s co-author,Mr Mandel.
How planetary geoarchaeologists will determine whether an item is worth preserving is an open question.“We feel that all material currently existing on extraterrestrial (地球外的) surfaces is space heritage and worthy of protection,” Holcomb said.“However, some sites, such as the very first footprints on the moon represent the material footprint of a long history of migration.” Beyond those “firsts”,making decisions on a case-by-case basis will be necessary to sort through the tens of thousands of pieces of debris (残骸) now in orbit or dropped across the surfaces of the moon and Mars, which many people refer to as “trash” but Holcomb and his colleagues see as heritage.

What is the definition of a dumpling In its most basic sense,it’s a pocket of flour filled with some form of tasty stuffing. And the easy ideas are surely the best.Dumplings are a popular food across the globe: both simple and complex, local and global, adaptable yet fixed in their home regions. Here are 4 of our favourites around the world to get your mouth watering.

One day,my nine-year-old younger brother Jeff came home from school earlier than me.When I returned home,I found he was shouting at our mum—who was busy cooking in the kitchen—about the clothes that needed washing.
