UNIT 3 ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
以读促写
Ⅰ.阅读理解
(2025·河北一模)
In the summer of 2015,Emily Parker,a young environmental enthusiast, travelled to the coast of California with her family to enjoy a relaxing beach vacation. She was excited to spend time by the ocean, swimming and basking in the sun. However,as she walked along the shore, she was astonished to see piles of plastic bottles, broken fishing nets, and discarded wrappers along the sand. The once beautiful beach was littered with trash, and this made Emily’s heart sink.
Emily had always cared about the environment, but seeing the pollution up close made her realise just how serious the problem had become. It was not only ruining her vacation but also endangering the marine life she loved. She thought of the turtles that might mistake plastic for food,or the seabirds that could get trapped in the nets. She knew she had to do something about it.
After returning home,Emily decided to take action. She began volunteering at local beach clean-up campaigns every weekend, picking up trash and raising awareness about the danger of ocean pollution. She encouraged her friends, family, and classmates to join her,and soon,a small group of dedicated volunteers formed. They organised monthly clean-up campaigns and started educating the community about reducing plastic waste.
But Emily didn’t stop there.Realising that the problem was far too big for just a small group to handle, she created a non-profit organisation called “Ocean’s Hope”.The organisation’s mission was to raise awareness about plastic pollution, organise global beach clean-up campaigns, and collaborate with businesses to reduce plastic packaging.Emily’s passion for the ocean grew stronger, and she worked tirelessly to inspire others.

UNIT 1 ART
以读促写
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·江苏常州模拟)
Vermander,a French professor at Fudan University’s School of Philosophy, has found a free mode of self-expression in Chinese ink paintings, who has created many Chinese ink paintings.
Born in France,Vermander has been fond of painting since childhood. However, impaired vision and hearing made it hard for him to advance his painting skills, and his brushwork was commented as not being “clean”.
The turning point came when Vermander made his first visit to China and was fascinated both by the history and the meanings of Chinese ink painting.“In this art form,I could find my own way of expression.I also realised that I could create much more freely than in classical Western painting,as even the ‘not clean’ part of my works can be a good part of an ink painting. So,I decided to shift my focus to Chinese ink painting,” Vermander says.Since then,he has visited many places across China to study Chinese painting.
“Every one of my Chinese ink paintings is also a philosophical statement,” he adds. For him,a good work—of either art or philosophy—should allow diversity in meaning,as each one can have a different connection to his work.Vermander regards his paintings as integrated expressions of himself with daily life.Through the ink brush,he hopes to show his inner explorations, and the movement of his heart.“What I like most in Chinese ink painting is the freedom it allows you.I am not skilled in Western painting as I have limited vision, and it is not my character to be cautious and careful. With Chinese ink painting,I could liberate my inner wildness. My only future goal is to have more time for painting —that’s it,” he says, laughing.

Ancient Chinese paintings are always in a vivid state for the world to appreciate, interpret and pass on. Each signature has the echo of history and the breathing of time.
When a scroll (卷轴) is opened, the art of painting is transformed into a living story, and the hidden history wakes up from the painting. The Night Revels of Han Xizai is described as the earliest human “movie” with the last emperor of the Southern Tang Dynasty as the “producer”, the painter Gu Hongzhong as the “cameraman”, and Han Xizai as the “leading actor”. It is said that Han Xizai understood the suspicion of the emperor and the intention of the painter’s visit, so he staged a banquet (宴会) with songs, dances and drinks to protect himself. Future generations would be able to feel the undeclared battles and historical suspicions of the ruler and ministers of that era through this painting.
Then there is The Emperor Taizong Receiving the Tibetan Envoy, which gives you the opportunity to step into Zhenguan Period and watch the scene of Li Shimin, Emperor Tang Taizong, receiving Lu Dongzan in the palace.
The paintings are used as brushes to record history and have been passed down for thousands of years. They are ancient paintings, as well as historical documents that can be read at any time. Each one of them is a parallel universe, allowing us to have a glimpse of those historical ups and downs.
People of later generations want to use advanced technology and innovative ideas to make history and its stories come alive. Thus, at the 2022 Spring Festival Gala, The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting, based on the painting A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, became a hit. We realise that pictures can not only be vivid on paper, but also be alive in 3D.
Ancient paintings have been appreciated for over a thousand years, and the beauty of China is more than landscapes. You can enjoy China in ancient paintings with a magnifying (放大) glass. Let’s enjoy the whispering of ancient paintings and the sweetness of traditional culture in ancient scrolls.

题组训练
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2025·湖南长沙模拟)
No poem should ever be discussed or“analysed”,until it has been read aloud by someone,a teacher or a student. What is better, perhaps,is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end,so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.
All discussions of poetry are,in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is,eventually, the most concrete“interpretation (解释)”of it,suggesting the tone, rhyme, and meaning all at once.Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice is obviously a special reward. But even those teaching aids cannot replace the student and the teacher reading it or,best of all, reciting it.
I have come to think,in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than“analysing” it and “exchanging views”,if there isn’t time for both.I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry and take it easy when we are reading a poem.Poetry is“a criticism of life” and “a heightening (提升) of life”.It is “a most appropriate approach to the truth of the feeling”,and it “can transform your life”.It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.
I am not saying that every English teacher must try out poetry teaching. Those who don’t like it should not be forced to convey that negative feeling to anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential (本质的) nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

The inspiration for Michigan Words came from a desire to make poetry a shared experience—accessible and visible to all Michiganders.Poetry often lives in books, workshops,or private spaces, but I wanted to bring it into public life in a way that encouraged community participation and reflection.I wanted the poets and their neighbours to feel proud in seeing words written by people in their community on billboards, big and towering above our landscapes. The billboards are great for this goal because they show language in everyday life. They fit into daily trips and ordinary routines, but they are also eye-catching enough to make people stop and think.
Working collaboratively with the poets to design each billboard was one of the most rewarding aspects of the project. We held brainstorming sessions and discussed each design element together to ensure that the poets’ visions were fully realised.I selected poets who truly represent Michigan’s geographic and cultural diversity. There are three poets from three very different regions whose works resonate with communities across the state.I worked with the Library of Michigan to create a universal design, but I wanted the authors to have full control over the work they shared. The poets did a wonderful job.
When deciding where to locate the billboards,I wanted each location to have balanced visibility. This careful placement ensured that the lines of poetry would be seen and felt as part of their environment.
I am happy to see the impact of this project.Recently, one of the three poets shared how much the project affected him personally, saying,“I think my mum has been more excited about the billboard than a lot of other sorts of poetry accomplishments that I’ve had in my life.”
I hope Michigan Words connects people and regions, and brings poets and passers-by together. It celebrates Michigan’s voices and shows that poetry, like our shared landscapes,is everywhere, waiting to be noticed and appreciated.

Limiting exposure to phthalates (邻苯二甲酸酯) isn’t as simple as avoiding particular types of packaging, because these chemicals can enter your food long before it is packaged.A chemical safety expert states that while manufacturers and regulators should ensure food safety, consumers can also take measures to reduce their exposure to plastic-related chemicals. Here are six steps.
Avoid plastic food storage containers
If you do use them, don’t heat them in the microwave, and avoid using them to store hot food, because heat can increase chemical leaching (渗出).And keep your food below the top of the container to avoid contact with the lid or cover, which are often made of plastic.
Steer clear of fast food
Plasticisers(增塑剂) in fast food are a cause for concern. Our tests detected some of the highest levels of phthalates and their alternatives in fast food. One possible reason could be that fast food is frequently prepared by workers wearing plastic gloves, which are known to be high in these substances.
Limit high-fat food
Fast food is often high in fat,and some research has shown that food with higher fat content tends to have more plasticisers, likely because plasticisers are fat-soluble(脂溶性的) and can transfer from plastic packaging materials into fatty food during processing or storage.
Eat fresh,minimally processed foods
Ensure your diet includes plenty of unpackaged fruit and vegetables,as they have fewer opportunities to contact with phthalates.A study found that those who ate more highly processed foods had higher levels of certain phthalate byproducts in their human waste.
Choose wood and stainless steel for kitchen tools
Cutting food up on a plastic cutting board can generate microplastics,so consider using a wooden board instead. Some plastic uses are probably riskier than others—putting hot food into a plastic bowl and using plastic wrap for leftovers may expose you more than giving your lettuce a quick dry in a plastic drying tool, for example.
Use water bottles made of glass or steel
Avoid plastic bottles and cups, which are often made with harmful substances.Carrying around your own stainless steel straws helps you get rid of plastic ones and reduce waste.

Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory.A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.
Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning.
Participants—72 healthy male and female adults—were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised.Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately.Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned.
According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer.Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning.I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning.

Understanding the link between the clean environment and human life is not a new concept. In fact,it was noticed as early as ancient Roman times.Today we see how green living has influenced our everyday lives. There is a growing community of people who embrace a zero waste lifestyle and make changes to the way they live to reduce their carbon footprint.
Living a zero waste lifestyle means doing one’s best to achieve the aim of not sending anything to a landfill.People who adopt this lifestyle ultimately cut down on their waste by reducing what they need and want. They reuse what they own, sending few things to be recycled.
Many people who adopt the zero waste lifestyle claim to be frustrated by the many harmful chemical substances found in beauty and cleaning products. They also find the uses of disposable items and excessive packaging the same. For example, how many times have we had to peel away layers of plastic wrap and cardboard before finally taking out the item which we had bought Instead of buying prepackaged food and goods, those who identify with the zero waste philosophy tend to shop in stores that allow them to make purchases and bring their own cloth bags and glass jars to store their purchases.
Many people may have the misconception that it is easier to live a zero waste lifestyle in the West.Nevertheless,Malaysian environmental journalist,Ms Aurora Tin,has proven that a zero waste lifestyle is possible even in the Asian context.Instead of going to the supermarket to buy prepackaged foods,Ms Tin now visits the wet market and brings her own bags for vegetables. She has even stopped using store-bought toothpaste and makes her own toothpaste from coconut oil and baking soda. This lifestyle may be too big a change for the average person, but we could follow her suit to make gradual changes to our own lives.

Bear Grylls’s Adventure Tales
Mr Grylls has established himself as television’s foremost survivalist. In episodes of a well-known TV show,he has been dropped into some punishing environments (the sand of the Sahara, the frigid Siberian wilderness) with little more than a knife,a water bottle, and the instructions to make it out alive.Below are excerpts (摘录) from an interview with him.
Q:When did you first grow interested in the outdoors
A:My late dad had been a climber. He started taking me out into the wild at a young age, doing everything from climbing sea cliffs hundreds of feet up to making boats and building treehouses. He taught me to take risks but to always listen to my inner voice and to work out clever solutions even when the situation has left you dramatically low on tools.
Q:Last time when you were in southern Africa, your parachute (降落伞) failed to open, resulting in an injury that nearly left you paralysed. What effect did that have on you
A:Those long months during recovery were a bitter time for me.I couldn’t move and was in constant pain.It was while I was lying there that I determined to refind my childhood dream of climbing Mount Qomolangma.I counted myself blessed to be able to leave that hospital fully recovered, and determined to live life boldly and without regrets.
Q:What was your most dangerous trip
A:Probably a small expedition I led across the Arctic Ocean in an open inflatable boat.We hit very unusual subzero storms off the ice packs of Greenland and gale-force winds. In a tiny open boat, you are truly at the mercy of the weather, and your survival is then taken out of your hands and put into those of Mother Nature. All five of us had to face the prospect of death during those nights.

In my early years at school,I was struggling with some subjects.I used to be a mischievous boy in class and get really bad grades. It came as no surprise that I got an F and that made me really scared. So what I used to do was cover those grades up—I would turn the F into a B just to please my parents.Well,it didn’t work. After that,I knew I had to accept that failure and learn from it,and something good actually came from it.I started doing better with my grades. That F turned into a B naturally, and that B turned into an A.
Since childhood,we have been constantly taught to believe failure is really a shame and that we must drown ourselves in sorrow and guilt when we fail.Consequently,we endeavor to achieve commonly-believed success and stay away from failure.
Nevertheless, this is an entirely wrong approach.Life is full of ups and downs. From being a kid to transitioning into an adult, you will fail at many things in life.So it is impossible to ignore it.It is okay when failure happens.Actually,it only tells you about yourself. You get to learn about your true capabilities, what you are good at,and what you are not.
Whenever you face failure, never think that you are never going to recover from this. You must think of ways to better yourself.Did you know it took Thomas Edison 10,000 attempts to invent the light bulb J.K.Rowling encountered a lot of rejections before her Harry Potter took off.All is proof that you must learn from your failure, not ignore it!
As Winston Churchill put it,“Success is not final, failure is not fatal.”And it is the courage to continue that counts.

A.By making comparisons. B.By listing examples.
C.By challenging the traditions. D.By quoting celebrities’ mottoes.
( )7.What is probably the best title of the passage

The snowstorm was supposed to hit on Monday evening. It was just past 4:30 p.m.I was in the office when my colleague at home called me,asking me to take his laptop to his home.I assured him.“The snow couldn’t start until later,” I thought. On the way to his place,I picked up a new cellphone charger, filled up my car with gas and picked up two pizzas for two kids.
It took me about 15 minutes to get to my colleague’s house, where I dropped off the laptop case and immediately got back on the road. Then the snow started, and it was coming down fast.Within minutes,I was in a whiteout.
The wind screamed. The road soon changed from paved to gravel. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow.I slowed down and rolled down my driver’s side window. But I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on.I kept the car running to stay warm and made an emergency call. The operator told me to sit tight and wait things out for the night. No one was coming to get me until morning at the earliest!
It was now about 6 p.m.and dark.I told myself I should calm down.I called my kids and told them what was happening. Then I stopped the car and texted that colleague.I joked that my good deed had ended in disaster.“Pin your location on the map and send it to me,” he had an idea.I did,and a few minutes later he texted me back a screenshot of the satellite view of where I was.We figured out that I was on a road called Bouvier Lane, between two farms.
It was now 6:30 p.m.I posted this new information in my community group, pleading for anyone who knew the farm residents to help rescue me.
At 8 p.m.,my cellphone rang.It was the son of the farmer who owned the land beside the road where I was.He told me that his dad was coming to get me.

No poem should ever be discussed or “analysed”,until it has been read aloud by someone,a teacher or a student. What is better, perhaps,is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end,so the sound of the poem is the last thing one hears of it.
All discussions of poetry are,in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is,eventually, the most concrete “interpretation (解释)” of it,suggesting the tone, rhyme, and meaning all at once.Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice is obviously a special reward. But even those teaching aids cannot replace the student and the teacher reading it or,best of all, reciting it.
I have come to think,in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than “analysing” it and “exchanging views”,if there isn’t time for both.I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry and take it easy when we are reading a poem.Poetry is “a criticism of life” and “a heightening (提升) of life”.It is “a most appropriate approach to the truth of the feeling”,and it “can transform your life”.It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies.
( )1.What should one do to have a better understanding of a poem
A.Discuss it with others. B.Analyse it by oneself.
C.Copy it into a notebook. D.Practise reading it aloud.
( )2.Which of the following is one of the purposes of teaching English
A.To get students to understand life.
B.To get students to enjoy poetry.
C.To get students to become teachers.
D.To get students to become poets.
( )3.What does the last sentence in the third paragraph imply
A.More stress should be laid on the teaching of poetry.
B.Poetry is more important than any other literature genre.
C.One cannot enjoy life fully without a good understanding of poetry.
D.Poetry is the foundation of all language and literature courses.

( )5.What was the main inspiration for the Michigan Words project
A.To create a new form of public art.
B.To promote the careers of local poets.
C.To make Michigan famous for its poetry.
D.To bring poetry within reach of Michiganders.
( )6.What does the underlined word “collaboratively” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Cooperatively. B.Secretly.
C.Competitively D.Constantly.
( )7.Why did the author mention the poet’s words
A.To promote his poetry.
B.To emphasise the visibility of the billboards.
C.To show the author’s involvement in the project.

A
Bear Grylls’s Adventure Tales

(2025·四川绵阳模拟)

Less plastic in your food
( )1.Which of the following statements is true according to the passage
A.Non-plastic cutting surfaces decrease the release of tiny pieces.
B.Fat-rich food naturally contains higher plasticiser concentrations.
C.Fast food workers’ health problem is a hidden contributor to food pollution.
D.Diets full of processed food correlate with increased traces of blood pressure.
( )2.What’s a healthier way to pack lunch
A.Pack a salad in a glass container and carry a stainless steel water bottle.
B.Keep sausages in a plastic lunchbox for heating in a microwave oven.
C.Wrap ready-made dishes in plastic film and take a glass water bottle.
D.Put fried chicken wings and hot dogs in a throwaway paper bag.
( )3.What can be concluded from the passage
A.Plastic-free food preparation is ideal for ecological safety.
B.Choosing unpackaged food can erase plasticiser exposure risks.
C.Daily habits can significantly affect exposure to harmful chemicals.
D.Government regulations are the main way to reduce plastic-related risks.

( )4.What did the new study aim to explore
A.When exercise is best for learning.
B.What biochemicals are good for health.
C.How brainwaves should be measured.
D.Which area of the brain is the most active.
( )5.What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment
A.Train on bicycles. B.Do mathematics exercises.
C.Play computer games. D.Watch films about nature.
( )6.Why did the participants return to the lab two days later
A.To do a medical examination. B.To have their memory tested.
C.To get their workouts recorded. D.To finish their previous tasks.
( )7.What might the author’s marathon running prove
A.The findings of the study are reliable.
B.Long-distance runners are often smart.
C.Studies on the marathon are not enough.
D.Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain.
