On the beach of San Miguel, a Mexican surf heaven in Todos Santos Bay, Ensenada, a small freshwater stream flows into the bay. While it doesn’t look like much, this connection of the stream and the sea is key to the bay’s famous surf break. For years, though, this delicate bond has been threatened by illegal landfills and proposed projects to expand the port facilities of Ensenada.
“The construction of coastal protection infrastructure (基础设施) is especially lethal to waves,” says Salazar, a local surfer.Three breakwaters have been responsible for wave extinctions in Ensenada:two of them built to secure ports and a third constructed to protect a gas company.
Although the biologists and surfers could see they urgently needed a conservation plan, the big question was how to design a project attractive enough for local politicians to get on board. So from 2014 to 2015, Trent E.Hodges, the conservation programme manager of Save the Waves Coalition (STW), an international nonprofit organisation committed to the protection of surf ecosystems around the world, studied the surfing activities of several hotspots in Todos Santos Bay in Ensenada using “surfonomics”, a methodology adopted by STW to measure the economic influence of surfing.
His study revealed that tourists had an average budget per day of US $111 and stayed an average of 10 bined, the expenditures of tourists and local surfers ranged from $746,000 to $969,000 annually. With the surfonomics data on board, the wave protection movement entered a new stage. In 2021, Arroyo San Miguel State Park was established and it was the first state park in Baja California.
For now, San Miguel’s waves keep rolling in.Surfers watch for them; children laugh and play near the stream that helps create them. This unique state park in Mexico seems to be ringing with the sounds of community and cooperation, nature and conservation, and the waves that will, hopefully, keep breaking far into the future.Together, these seem like a victory song.

It was a cool Saturday morning when I dragged myself out of bed.The golden sun of early autumn cast warm light across the room.In the kitchen, my elder brother, Jake, sat at the table with a serious look reading a newspaper under the headline “The Oak (橡树) in Maple Park Set for Removal”.
I felt my heart sink. That oak tree wasn’t just any tree; it was our tree.Jake and I had spent countless childhood afternoons under its wide branches, playing games and reading comic books. To us, it was more than wood and leaves—it was a living reminder of years of laughter, stories, and brotherly bonding.
“Can they really do that ” I asked, disbelief in my voice.“The community council wants to remove it to make room for a new parking lot.The plan is under discussion and they’ll decide whether to do that at the next council meeting,” he said bitterly.Silence wrapped around us until Jake stood up suddenly.“You know everyone in the community has a right to speak at the council meeting. We have to voice our objections then,” Jake said.I nodded, and without another word, we both knew what we had to do first.
An hour later, we stood at the edge of Maple Park with our “supplies”.The oak stood tall, but the ground around it was littered with fallen leaves and plastic bottles.I looked at Jake, who gave me a determined smile.“Let’s clean this up,” he said. Not long after we started cleaning, a few curious passers-by stopped to ask why we were doing it.Knowing our mission, they began to join us.By late afternoon, the oak’s base was free of clutter (杂乱的东西).Cleaning up was only the first step, and we had more to do.
We took pictures, not just of the tree but of the people who had come together to save it.

We decided to show how much this tree meant to everyone. That evening Jake and I sat at the kitchen table, printing the photos and designing a poster. We also prepared a signing sheet to collect signatures. For the next few weeks, Jake and I went door to door, showing the poster to neighbours and asking them to write their names on the list if they supported us.To our delight, many people eagerly shared their own cherished stories about the oak. They signed without hesitation, some smiling warmly and others nodding firmly with great determination.Even a few strangers joined us voluntarily.
By the time the meeting came, we’d collected hundreds of signatures. The community centre was packed.Jake stood up, holding the poster and the sheet filled with signatures. He spoke steadily yet emotionally, “This tree holds our history and memories...” The council listened intently. After discussion, they announced their decision:the oak would stay here and the parking lot was to be built elsewhere.People present burst into applause, giving us the thumbs-up.
Jake and I swelled with a surge of pride—our oak would live on as the heart of the community.

Chocolate is a popular snack, but the price of it continues to rise.Cocoa from the cacao tree is the basic ingredient of chocolate; the trees thrive in warm and damp climates but are struggling due to increasing aridity—a slow but non-stop drying of the land. This issue extends to producers around the globe, threatening cacao production and livelihoods of farmers.
Over the past 30 years, more than three-quarters of Earth’s land area has become drier. This dryness is a long-term transformation with disastrous consequences for ecosystems and agriculture.
Aridity arises mainly from human-driven factors, including greenhouse gas emissions, unsustainable land use,and natural resource degradation.Climate change, primarily caused by fossil fuel consumption and deforestation, increases global temperatures, accelerating evaporation (蒸发) and heightening water shortage—even in regions with moderate rainfall.
Unsustainable land use further intensifies aridity.Practices like deforestation and industrial farming degrade soils, removing them from protective vegetation and essential nutrients. In cocoa-producing regions, deforestation upsets local water cycles and wears away the topsoil. Degraded soils hold less water, deepening drought conditions.
Cacao is just one crop at risk.Major agricultural zones are also affected.By 2100,up to 5 billion people may live in dry lands, stretching food systems to their limit and forcing migration. Aridity also threatens ecosystems.Wildlife struggles to adapt, and plant species suited to warm and damp conditions fail to survive.Economic losses are overwhelming—some African countries have seen their GDP decline due to rising aridity.Governments face additional burdens from sandstorms, wildfires, and water shortages.
While aridity’s effects are severe, they are not entirely changeless.Restoring degraded lands, improving soil quality, and adopting sustainable farming practices can help.Efficient water management, investment in renewable energy, and international cooperation are essential in battling aridity.
As chocolate prices hit record highs in early 2025 due to dry conditions in Africa, addressing aridity is a matter of urgency.Beyond saving chocolate,it’s about preserving the planet’s ability to sustain life.
( )1.What’s the main reason for the rising price of chocolate
A.The decline of cacao production.
B.The high cost of basic ingredients.
C.The increasing demand for chocolate.
D.The shortage of cacao tree plantations.
( )2.What do we know about aridity
A.It is mainly caused by natural factors.
B.It only affects cacao-producing regions.
C.It has a wide-ranging impact on various aspects.
D.It will disappear if sustainable land use is adopted.
( )3.Why is Africa’s GDP decline mentioned in Paragraph 5
A.To show aridity only causes economic losses in Africa.
B.To prove Africa is the most severely affected by aridity.
C.To criticise Africa lacks effective measures against aridity.
D.To illustrate aridity has a significant influence on economy.
( )4.Which of the following can fight against aridity
A.Cutting off water supplies. B.Replacing renewable energy.
C.Promoting soil conservation. D.Practising industrial farming.

Jane Jacobs spent her working life advancing a distinct vision of the city—in particular focusing on what makes a successful urban community. At the heart of her vision is the idea that urban life should be an energetic and rich affair, whereby people are able to interact with one another in dense (稠密) and exciting urban environments. She prefers disorder to order, walking to driving, and diversity to uniformity.
For Jacobs, urban communities are organic beings that should be left to grow and change by themselves and not be subject to the grand plans of so-called experts and officials. The best judges of how a city should be—and how it should develop—are the local residents themselves.Jacobs argues that urban communities are best placed to understand how their city functions, because city life is created and sustained through their various interactions.
Jacobs notes that the built form of a city is crucial to the life of an urban community, especially the sidewalks. The streets in which people live should be a tight pattern of crossed sidewalks, which allow people to meet, talk, and get to know one another.Such a complex but ultimately enriching set of encounters helps individuals know their neighbours and neighbourhood better.
Diversity and mixed-use of space are also, for Jacobs, key elements of this urban form. The commercial, business, and residential elements of a city should not be separated out but instead be side by side,to allow for greater integration of people. There should also be a diversity of old and new buildings, and people’s interactions should determine how buildings get used and reused.
Finally, urban communities grow better in places where a critical mass of people live, work, and interact.Such high-density spaces are,she feels, engines of creativity and vitality. They are also safe places to be,because the higher density means that there are more “eyes on the street”: Shopkeepers and locals who know their area and maintain a close watch over the neighbourhood.
( )5.What does Jacobs find most important for a successful urban community
A.Efficient public transport.
B.Strong interaction between people.
C.Uniform style of buildings.
D.A comparatively large population.
( )6.Who does Jacobs think should make decisions on urban development
A.Local residents. B.Government officials.
C.City planners. D.Construction workers.
( )7.How does Jacobs suggest sidewalks be built
A.Lined with plants. B.Painted with clear signs.
C.Tightly connected. D.Convenient for the old.
( )8.According to Jacobs, the “eyes on the street” bring a sense of .
A.pride B.comfort
C.security D.urgency

Vegan Agriculture
Vegan farming has become more and more popular. It is one of the most environmentally friendly forms of agriculture.Vegan farming is a good way to grow plants such as vegetables without using animal-derived materials such as their waste.1. Such an approach to farming also helps preserve the environment and regain soil richness and improve its biodiversity.
2. Organic farming uses natural products to grow plants—that can include even animal waste as fertilisers. On the other hand, vegan agriculture rejects animal-derived products and usually sticks with plant-based organic compounds, which means that,in general, vegan agriculture has stricter rules than organic farming.
Additionally, vegan farming usually chooses more natural ways to protect the plants, like breaking cycles of plants’ diseases with mixed cropping(混作),using mechanical barriers(机械屏障) such as nets,or even attracting opposing organisms to fight the harmful ones.3. However, they might be less effective against certain plant diseases or pests.
One of the reasons to develop vegan agriculture is that the vegan way of farming replaces synthetic(合成的)pesticides and uses organic pesticides or other non-chemical methods to protect the crops.By contrast,in conventional agriculture, synthetic pesticides are on a very high level.4.
In the future,it is of great significance not to rely on animals’ waste to feed plants.Doing so is not only beneficial to vegans.5. Even if today’s methods of vegan agriculture might not be perfect, scientists worldwide, together with vegan farmers, are working towards developing plant-based solutions as alternatives to animal-derived fertilisers.
A.Accordingly, the amount of them in food products is much higher.
B.Also, vegan farmers are far from applying synthetic fertilisers.
C.It is apparent that vegan agriculture is not the same as organic farming.
D.In today’s world, the vegan diet and lifestyle are increasingly popular.
E.But it’s also good for the whole world, including other animals and plants.
F.These ways affect the environment less than the ways of traditional farming.
G.The rise of veganism creates new demand for more vegan-friendly agriculture.

Global sea levels continue to rise despite efforts that cities around the world are making to reduce the effects of climate change and their carbon emissions. One firm, however,is hoping to battle the effects of climate change.Driven by alarming estimates that 36.6 million people in Asian coastal cities like Mumbai could face flooding by 2070,a well-known architecture firm, based in Venice,Italy, has released Floating City—a design that would allow urban areas to rise with the waters while making use of renewable energy resources to reduce their own carbon emissions.
Each 25-acre unit houses 50,000 residents on interconnected platforms, with potential expansion for 200,000 and buildings are capped at 90 metres tall for stability.“Structures must be flexible like bamboo in wind to resist waves,” explains architect Luca Curci. To achieve this, seawater resistant materials are given priority to,while hollow sections in platforms help them float.Meanwhile, movable bridges are constructed to link these “water neighbourhoods” to mainland transport systems.
The project team also envisions a mix of renewable energy sources extracting power from wind, water, and the sun to power the city.During extreme weather, platforms automatically separate and regroup using intelligence algorithms inspired by how fish schools avoid hunters.
Compared to building artificial islands, this method preserves 68% more marine life and uses surfaces that absorb rainwater to reduce flooding risks. However, challenges persist.Seawater slowly harms materials, requiring repair every four months, and emergency plans for extreme weather are still under way.“This isn’t about abandoning coasts but evolving with them,” notes designer Tim Fu.
While some question long-term possibility, the design redefines urban resilience.Unlike rigid sea walls, these dynamic structures harmonize with oceanic rhythms, offering a blueprint for climate solutions.“Cities must learn to dance with the waves,” Curci says. This philosophy could transform humanity’s relationship with rising seas, turning threats into sustainable opportunities.

You are just waking up in the spring of 2040.Your bedroom opens solar-powered e-windows and plays soft music while your smart lighting displays a montage of a beachfront sunrise from your recent vacation.
Your shower uses very little water or soap.It recycles your grey water and puts the extra heat back into your home’s operating system. While you dress, your artificial intelligence (AI)assistant shares your schedule for the day and plays your favourite tunes.
You still start your day with a coffee but it comes from your refrigerator which is capable of providing a coffee house experience in your home.A hot breakfast tailored to your specific nutritional needs (based on chemical analysis from your trips to the “smart toilet”) is waiting for you in the kitchen.
When it’s time to leave,an on-demand transport system has three cars waiting for you, your wife (or husband)and your kids.On the road, driverless cars move with mathematical accuracy, without traffic jams, routine maintenance or road rage.Accident rates are near zero.
On the way,you call your assistant team, who are taking on a day’s work in Shanghai.Your life-sized image is projected (投射) onto the screen of the conference room and your colleagues see you as if you were sitting there. It’s a bit surreal (离奇的) for them to see you in the morning light given that it’s dark on the Bund,Shanghai’s waterfront, though the novelty disappears after using it a few times.
You review the day’s cloud-based data from your Shenzhen manufacturing centre, your pilot project in San Diego, and your QA team in Melbourne.Large quantities of data sets collected in real time from every piece of equipment have been beautifully summarised by your company’s AI. All these facilities are closely maintained and operated through an advanced predictive analytics platform.
Pleased with the team’s progress, you end the call and ease into a good book.
This is the future and it will be here sooner than you think.

( )8.What drove this architecture firm to come up with a new design

The winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2025 is Liu Jiakun. The prize, established in 1979,is commonly regarded as “the Nobel Prize of architecture”.
Liu Jiakun was born in 1956.His architectural adventure began when he started playing in the corridors of the large brick hospital where his mother worked as a doctor.“From the rooftop,I could see the whole city,” Liu recalled in an interview, describing how these early experiences shaped his perspective on urban space and community life. After graduating in 1982,Liu’s career took a special path. While working for a state-owned architecture firm,he also developed a strong passion for writing.“I had two identities then,” he explained “By day I was an architect,by night a writer.” This creative life would later profoundly influence his architectural philosophy.
Liu’s designs skillfully combine traditional Chinese elements with modern functionality. His West Village commercial complex in Chengdu (2015) is a typical example of this approach, transforming the entire city block into a lively public space with buildings, bike paths and pedestrian walkways that reexplain traditional Chinese urban planning for modern needs.
The Pritzker judges particularly praised Liu’s “respect for culture, history and nature”. Remarkable projects include a well-known building in Shanghai, which features dramatic balconies inspired by ancient Chinese architecture, and the Luyeyuan Stone Sculpture Art Museum, evoking (唤醒) the peace of classical Chinese gardens.
Perhaps Liu’s most painful creation is his “rebirth brick” project following the deadly 2008 Sichuan earthquake.Using straw and stones from the fallen buildings,Liu developed these special bricks to help rebuild communities.“Each brick carries history,” he said, highlighting how architecture can represent both memory and restoration.
In his Pritzker statement,Liu described his design philosophy in a poetic way,“I dream to be like water—adapting to each place’s unique qualities while gradually solidifying into architecture that honours both tradition and innovation.”
( )1.What is Liu Jiakun’s most likely view of his childhood
A.A source of inspiration. B.A burden of his growth.

A.Modern but ordinary. B.Expensive but functional.
C.Simple and impractical. D.Traditional and innovative.

Huang Xuhua, born in 1926 in Guangdong Province,is known as the “Father of China’s Nuclear Submarines”. His pioneering work in the 1960s and 1970s helped lay the foundation for China’s nuclear submarine programme, which played a key role in the country’s defense strategy during a time of intense global pressure.
In 1958,Mr Huang was appointed as the chief designer for China’s first nuclear submarine project. At that time,China lacked the necessary technology and resources to construct such advanced submarines, and due to international situation, the team had to rely solely on domestic innovation.Despite these significant challenges,Mr Huang accepted the mission with determination, driven by the need to safeguard China’s maritime sovereignty (主权) and strengthen its strategic defense. The greatest hurdle was developing a compact nuclear reactor capable of powering a submarine. With limited expertise in nuclear physics and engineering,Mr Huang and his team worked tirelessly to design an efficient and reliable reactor, demonstrating his creativity and leadership skills.
After over a decade of hard work,Huang’s team achieved a historic breakthrough in 1970 by launching China’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the Type 091 (Han-class).This meant China became one of the few countries able to build nuclear submarines.Soon after, they developed the Type 092 (Xia-class),China’s first ballistic missile submarine, which boosted the country’s nuclear defense.

The Figure I Admire MostUNIT 4 BODY LANGUAGE
以读促写
Ⅰ.阅读理解
Words are powerful:They have the ability to lift up the lowest of the low or tear down the highest of the high. But a strong argument could be made that our body language is even more influential. The most effective communication occurs when the importance of body language in teaching is acknowledged. When these nonverbal signals are working together with our words,it creates communication synergy.
It has been suggested that two-thirds of our communication is nonverbal.Positive body language in a classroom setting has the ability to motivate and inspire students and engage their attention. It can not only give you the confidence to teach what you need to but also inform your students that you actually know what you’re talking about. It can even make your students feel safe and confident enough to participate in the lessons more frequently.
Most leadership positions encourage body language that demonstrates power and confidence.
Signals include standing tall, gesturing only from the waist up,keeping the head straight and forwards, and talking while pointing to others, which are obvious ways to exercise control. But when teaching, the nonverbal signals need to show a different type of leadership. These signals convey warmth and understanding, reminding your students that you are approachable and there to help them grow. For example, fix your eyes on one student for about 15-30 seconds before changing to another student, which is one of the best ways to keep students’ focus.Nod your head.Give a thumbs-up—maybe two!Show them they are on the right path and they will be more confident in continuing down it.
Body language is of great importance and can never be ignored. It’s desirable that you should advocate using body language in teaching and pay attention to the using rules and using skills. You should use appropriate, natural and clear body language. It’s crucial that you create a good classroom atmosphere, inspire students’ imagination and grasp students’ mood.

( )5.What does the underlined word “lethal” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Extremely harmful. B.Directly beneficial.
C.Highly responsive. D.Relatively sensitive.
( )6.What might be a logical starting point for involving politicians in wave conservation
A.Urgent need for coastal protection. B.Environmental impact of wave loss.
C.Economic benefits from surf tourism. D.Wave extinction in Todos Santos Bay.
( )7.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4
A.The data collected by Hodges.
B.The implications of Hodges’ study.
C.The current situation of surf tourism.
D.The process of wave protection movement.
( )8.What does the author think of the establishment of the state park
A.It’s a short-term fix. B.It’s the result of joint efforts.

( ) 1.What does the underlined word “synergy” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Energy loss. B.Confusing result.
C.Individual effect. D.Combined power.
( ) 2.What do most leadership positions mainly express
A.Warmth. B.Control.
C.Understanding. D.Encouragement.
( ) 3.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph
A.To explain a theory. B.To make a description.
C.To give suggestions. D.To summarise a debate.
( ) 4.What is the passage mainly talking about
A.The importance of the teachers’ body language.
B.The effective ways of good communication.
C.The value of teacher-student communication.
D.The prospect of students’ nonverbal learning.

His West Village commercial complex in Chengdu (2015) is a typical example of this approach,
transforming the entire city block into a lively public space with buildings, bike paths and pedestrian walkways that reexplain traditional Chinese urban planning for modern needs.

Huang’s contributions went beyond technology. His leadership inspired a generation of Chinese scientists and engineers to focus on self-reliance and innovation.Despite the heavy pressure and secrecy surrounding his work,Huang stayed committed to the project, often sacrificing personal comforts for its success. In recognition of his achievements,Huang has received many awards, including the National Highest Science and Technology Award,China’s highest honour for scientific achievements.

(2025·山东实验中学二模)
Chocolate is a popular snack, but the price of it continues to rise.Cocoa from the cacao tree is the basic ingredient of chocolate; the trees thrive in warm and damp climates but are struggling due to increasing aridity—a slow but non-stop drying of the land. This issue extends to producers around the globe, threatening cacao production and livelihoods of farmers.
Over the past 30 years, more than three-quarters of Earth’s land area has become drier. This dryness is a long-term transformation with disastrous consequences for ecosystems and agriculture.
Aridity arises mainly from human-driven factors, including greenhouse gas emissions,
unsustainable land use,and natural resource degradation.Climate change, primarily caused by fossil fuel consumption and deforestation, increases global temperatures, accelerating evaporation (蒸发) and heightening water shortage—even in regions with moderate rainfall.
Unsustainable land use further intensifies aridity.Practices like deforestation and industrial farming degrade soils, removing them from protective vegetation and essential nutrients. In cocoa-producing regions, deforestation upsets local water cycles and wears away the topsoil.Degraded soils hold less water, deepening drought conditions.
Cacao is just one crop at risk.Major agricultural zones are also affected.By 2100,up to 5 billion people may live in dry lands, stretching food systems to their limit and forcing migration.Aridity also threatens ecosystems.Wildlife struggles to adapt, and plant species suited to warm and damp conditions fail to survive.Economic losses are overwhelming—some African countries have seen their GDP decline due to rising aridity.Governments face additional burdens from sandstorms, wildfires, and water shortages.

Jacobs notes that the built form of a city is crucial to the life of an urban community,
especially the sidewalks.
Finally, urban communities grow better in places where a critical mass of people live, work,
and interact.Such high-density spaces are,she feels, engines of creativity and vitality. They are also safe places to be,because the higher density means that there are more “eyes on the street”:
Shopkeepers and locals who know their area and maintain a close watch over the neighbourhood.

Additionally, vegan farming usually chooses more natural ways to protect the plants, like breaking cycles of plants’ diseases with mixed cropping(混作),using mechanical barriers(机械屏障)such as nets,or even attracting opposing organisms to fight the harmful ones.3.
