UNIT 4 JOURNEY ACROSS A VAST LAND
以读促写
Ⅰ.阅读理解
Earlier this year,I visited Baluran National Park in East Java with my family. This park, named after an extinct volcano,is the only place in Indonesia that looks like an African savanna (稀树草原).Therefore,it is called Africa in Indonesia. You can see deer, large water buffaloes, small mice, peacocks, eagles, monkeys and many more animals.
When walking in the park,we really had the feeling that we were in Africa. This was mainly due to its climate. The air was hot and dry rather than warm and wet.It was completely different from what I got used to in Indonesia and I was so astonished.
In the park, you will never get bored because the whole neighbourhood is full of monkeys. But these monkeys are rude and aggressive(好斗的).Monkeys guarded our house and wanted food. When we didn’t give them food, they would rob us of food.So each of us was offered a stick by the rangers(护林员).They taught us that when the monkeys were too aggressive,we must lift the stick. And it worked perfectly.
In the late afternoon,we went for a walk to explore the area.On the way,we saw many species of trees that couldn’t be found anywhere else in Indonesia.Soon the sunset approached so we decided to go back. But darkness fell about halfway through the journey. We only had the poor light from our phones. And we heard only the sounds of animals around us.It was possible that hungry animals might come close to us and take us as their dinner. We started to feel scared and quickened our steps.Just when we were about to reach our breaking point,we saw a ranger, who comforted us and led us to safety.
In the evening,we talked with the ranger about his life in Baluran. And after dinner,he invited us to fish with him at sunrise. We really had a great time in the park, and I always look forward to coming back and experiencing all the excitements again.

In recent years,an increasing number of foreign students have adopted Chinese opera, not just as tourists but as participants in in-depth learning experiences. Many international students spent nearly a month attending a summer course on traditional Chinese operas at Shanghai Theatre Academy, where they explored this engaging art form. The students, including culture enthusiasts and first-time visitors, were introduced to the unique vocal (发声的) techniques and purposeful movements that distinguish Chinese operas from European theatre traditions. They not only practiced the technical aspects but also gained an appreciation for the cultural significance of each performance.
Among the participants was Daria Oganesova,a history student from St.Petersburg State University, who found the operatic skills challenging yet interesting.Despite her background in Chinese history, this was her first hands-on experience with traditional operas.Kayla Hamilton-Dick,an exchange student from New Zealand, described Chinese operas as “deep and complex”,pushing her to practice the movements diligently after class.Though the learning process was difficult, all the students successfully completed their “graduation performances”, demonstrating their hard work and growth.
Li,an opera artist with nearly 50 years of teaching experience, shared valuable insights with the students, explaining the historical and emotional context of the operas. For example, before teaching Ode to Pear Flowers, she explained the heartbreaking story of Yang Guifei,a beloved wife of Emperor Xuanzong, which helped students better convey the emotions in their performances.
The course, which has been running since 2011,not only focused on opera but also introduced other traditional Chinese arts, such as puppet (木偶) shows. These diverse experiences left a lasting effect on the students, many of whom later became cultural representatives, writing books or producing documentaries about Chinese operas.Zhang,a teacher at the academy, emphasized the importance of allowing foreigners to experience Chinese culture first-hand,as their viewpoints can more effectively promote it to the world, encouraging cultural exchange and shared understanding.
( )5.How were the foreign students in the course
A.Experienced. B.Passionate.
C.Casual. D.Hesitant.
( )6.What can we learn about Kayla Hamilton-Dick from the second paragraph
A.She possessed knowledge of Chinese history.

( )8.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage
A.To recommend an opera artist. B.To highlight students’ challenges.

With the development of globalization,“interconnectivity” has become a buzzword (流行词) of the modern world.Although this trend brings lots of advantages,it can also present some challenges.1. Understanding and overcoming cultural barriers is very important in daily life. Here are some tips on how to properly handle cultural differences.
Be self-aware and acknowledge differences. Most cross-cultural misunderstandings come from a single-minded opinion. If we judge others through our own culture,we may end up with wrong interpretations.Failing to acknowledge differences may easily lead to misconceptions and even conflicts.2.
Do research and learn about other cultures. After cultural differences are acknowledged,it’s important to learn more about them.3. Understanding the reasoning behind one’s actions can reduce “wrong labeling” and lead to a more effective cooperation and communication process.
4. Try your best to avoid quick judgments and be open to new beliefs and behavior. Find out what you have in common and learn how to make the best use of each unique characteristic.Respect the fact that others have distinct core values.
All in all, dealing with cultural differences is quite challenging and requires a lot of work.5. When you meet people from different cultures and backgrounds next time, just be mindful, and stay open-minded and patient.
A.One of them is cultural barriers.
B.Be open-minded,adaptable and respectful.
C.You can either do your own research or simply ask others about them.
D.Employees should be prepared to work in a multicultural environment.

Malaria causes more than 600,000 deaths each year, and is just one of numerous deadly human diseases transported by mosquitoes. But what if we could make our blood poisonous to the mosquitoes While it sounds like science fiction, the idea isn’t as incredible as it might sound.
In a study published in a journal, scientists report that a drug known as Nitisinone (尼替西农) can turn human blood so poisonous to mosquitoes that they die within a few hours of feeding on samples from patients who received even a small amount. What’s more, the drug remains effective for up to 16 days.
It’s important to note that Nitisinone itself does not protect against malaria infection. However,by killing the mosquitoes before they can lay eggs, the drug might be able to knock down disease-spreading mosquito populations to the point that it breaks the chain of infection.
Like a vaccine that relies on herd immunity (群体免疫) then, the potential isn’t in being individually immune to malaria, but rather working together as a community to prevent an outbreak.
While the researchers caution that such a tool is not intended to fully eradicate diseases that mosquitoes spread,it may prove helpful in working with other strategies, such as malaria prevention drugs, and vaccines themselves. The new tool might prove especially effective in areas where mosquitoes have already developed resistance to other treatments.
The drug is already approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA),because it is used to treat rare genetic diseases.Inspired by a poison in the Australian bottlebrush plant,Nitisinone was originally intended for use as a weedkiller. It worked by targeting an essential amino acid known as Tyrosine(酪氨酸).A family of rare genetic disorders occur when the body can’t properly deal with that same amino acid.Researchers found that Nitisinone could be an effective treatment,so the U.S.FDA approved it for use in humans.

As the planet gets hotter, the need for cool living environments is becoming more urgent. But air conditioning is a major contributor to global warming since its units release powerful greenhouse gases and use lots of energy.
Now,researchers from McGill University,UCLA and Princeton have found in a new study an inexpensive, sustainable alternative to mechanical cooling with refrigerants(制冷剂) in hot and dry climates, and a way to relieve dangerous heat waves during electricity blackouts.
The researchers set out to answer how to achieve a new benchmark(基准) in passive cooling inside naturally conditioned buildings in hot climates such as Southern California. As an attempt, they examined the use of roof materials that radiate(辐射) heat into the cold universe, even under direct sunlight, and how to combine them with temperature-driven ventilation(通风).These cool radiator materials and coatings are often used to stop roofs overheating.Researchers have also used them to improve heat rejection from chillers. But there is untapped potential for integrating them into architectural design more fully,so they can not only reject indoor heat to outer space in a passive way,but also drive regular and healthy air changes.
“We found we could maintain air temperatures several degrees below the current surrounding temperature, and several degrees more below a reference ‘gold standard’ for passive cooling,” said Remy Fortin, lead author and PhD candidate at McGill University.“We did this without sacrificing healthy ventilation air changes.” This was a considerable challenge, considering air exchanges are a source of heating when the aim is to keep a room cooler than the outside.
The researchers hope the findings will be used to positively impact communities suffering from dangerous climate heating and heatwaves.“We hope that materials scientists, architects, and engineers will be interested in these results, and that our work will inspire more complete thinking for how to integrate breakthroughs in radiative cooling materials with simple but effective architectural solutions,” said Remy Fortin.

Italian cuisine, deeply linked with ancient cultures like the Greeks,Arabs, and Romans, reflects a rich culinary heritage. It has been influenced by historical events, regional climates, and cultural exchanges. Many Italians see traditional Italian dishes as the most significant aspect of their national identity, above culture, fashion, football, science and technology. This deep connection to culinary tradition highlights the significant role of food in shaping Italian culture and identity.
During the 15th century and beyond, new ingredients were introduced from the Age of Exploration.Tomatoes, potatoes and so on greatly influenced Italian cuisine. This period saw the improvement of cooking techniques and the introduction of different flavors.Influences from other European countries also began to shape Italian dishes, leading to the rich variety of flavors and styles. These set the foundation for modern Italy’s diverse and fancy culinary landscape. In the 16th century,French cuisine influenced the formal dining scene with complex dishes and culinary techniques that emphasized appearance and presentation. All dishes were laid out at the same time, giving guests the freedom to serve themselves.
Following Italy’s unification (统一),Pellegrino Artusi, the father of Italian cuisine, noted that there was a need to forge a unified Italian identity where culinary tradition played an important role. His Italian cookbook Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well furthered cultural unification. Historian Piero Camporesi even said that Artusi’s cookbook contributed more to national unification than some of Italy’s most influential literary works.
The 19th century saw a huge change in dining styles, shifting from French to Russian service. Russian service was characterized by serving one course at a time, each freshly cooked and hot. After a period where both styles co-existed,Russian service remains the main method today, which keeps fine dining experience while reducing food waste.
Italian cuisine,a key part of Italy’s identity, shows how the country absorbs different traditions into its own unique style. Its charm lies in its diversity and inclusivity, with no single dish shining brighter than the others. This deep appreciation for food culture, common to all regions and social classes, represents the whole of Italy.

Kemira Boyd had just jumped in the shower when she heard her stepmother,Tammy Boyd, knocking on the door.Kemira’s 12-day-old daughter Ryleigh was choking.Kemira tried everything, but she still couldn’t breathe.Kemira knew Ryleigh needed to get to the hospital fast.
They had barely driven out of their neighbourhood when a police car appeared behind them.Deputy Will Kimbro figured that the speeding driver was either too distracted to notice him or unconcerned.Kimbro soon found out that it was a frightening combination of the two.
Once she’d pulled over,Kemira handed the baby to Kimbro. He put a hand on her little chest.Ryleigh’s heart was barely beating.Kimbro radioed for an ambulance. At that time Ryleigh’s lips were already blue.
The fact that Kimbro was there was a miracle. He had recently completed a CPR class and knew how to treat a child.
“Although I was shocked,my training kicked in,and I went to work to keep that child alive,” said Kimbro. Then he began tapping Ryleigh’s chest, hoping to press her heart back into action. Thanks to the CPR class,Kimbro knew the choking child didn’t have a chance if there was a blockage, and he used one finger to clear her airway. That was a magic touch.Twenty seconds later,Ryleigh began to cry.“If she’s crying like that, she’s breathing,”said Kimbro.
But they still had five more minutes until the ambulance would arrive, and Kimbro worried that Ryleigh would choke again. He continued with delicate chest compression and clearing her airway.
After transferring Ryleigh to the ambulance,Kimbro drove away.At the hospital,Ryleigh recovered quickly thanks to a determined police officer who was in the right place at the right time.

In the heart of Tennessee lies the charming town Pigeon Forge,a destination known for its breathtaking landscapes and warm-hearted community. The towering peaks, dotted with vigorous grasslands, seemed to stretch towards the heavens, while the gentle mist that clung (依附) to the slopes added an air of mystery.
As we drove along the winding roads of Pigeon Forge, the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains enveloped us,melting away the stresses of daily life. But news came that the hurricane was strengthening in our home,Brandon,Florida, making it necessary for us to extend our stay to remain safe.
One day,we went to The Old Mill restaurant, known for its tasty Southern cuisine and historic charm. As we approached the restaurant, however, our car broke down on the side of the road.A low spirit washed over us as we realized that we were trapped in an unfamiliar place, miles away from the nearest garage.
After seemingly centuries,a car came along and we noticed a gentleman in it.With a sense of upset,we approached and told him why we were here and asked if he could help us with a jump start. To our relief,he happily agreed to assist us,his kind eyes and warm smile putting us at ease.As he skillfully connected the jumper cables and brought our car back to life,we couldn’t help but feel grateful for his assistance.
As we went inside the restaurant to put our names on the waitlist,we were greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere.Much to our amazement, the gentleman who had helped us with the car came up to us and introduced himself as Mo,the manager of The Old Mill.He got us a table right away, despite the restaurant being busy.On this day full of unexpected turns, the gentleman was like a warm candlelight in the darkness.

The 19th century saw a huge change in dining styles, shifting from French to Russian service.Russian service was characterized by serving one course at a time, each freshly cooked and hot.

Among the participants was Daria Oganesova,a history student from St.Petersburg State University, who found the operatic skills challenging yet interesting.Despite her background in Chinese history, this was her first hands-on experience with traditional operas.Kayla Hamilton-Dick,an exchange student from New Zealand, described Chinese operas as “deep and complex”,pushing her to practice the movements diligently after class.Though the learning process was difficult, all the students successfully completed their “graduation performances”,
demonstrating their hard work and growth.

After the discussion with my husband,I came up with a good idea.We bought a basket of fresh fruits and wrote a card: “Kindness is a seed. Thanks for planting it in us.”On our drive out,we offered a free ride to a traveler struggling with a heavy suitcase. We also stopped to help a tourist whose car had a flat tire—just as Mo had done for us.Seeing the grateful smiles of those in need,we realized that Mo’s act of goodwill had sparked a chain reaction. As we waved goodbye,I thought: kindness is like a spark.Mo lit it,and now it was our turn to let it glow brighter.
