Ⅰ.阅读理解

Most birds,in particular, exhibit some degree of patterns and colours.Australia’s zebra finch (斑胸草雀),for example, was so named because of the zebra-like black and white bars on its tail. But it also has many other colours and patterns, from a bright orange bill to fine white spots along its reddish-brown sides. It’s not uncommon to spot the bird in the drier parts of Australia.
We tend to suppose all individuals of that species have their spots and bars in the same places.Look closer yet we’ll see that the quantity and design of these patterns vary between individuals. And somehow a bird exhibits a more obvious feather variation.Occasionally,we see one that has larger than usual pale areas of feathers or,more rarely, has lost its normal patterning altogether.
Colouration and patterning in all animals are caused by a range of pigments (色素).Melanin (黑色素) is responsible for blacks and browns, and a lack of this pigment can cause a partial or total loss of an individual’s dark patterning. The two main terms that describe these abnormalities are albinism and leucism. Both conditions are genetic and both can lead to a very similar physical appearance.Leucism, however, causes a lack of the pigment cells that produce melanin. But albinism causes the production of melanin to be reduced or absent.
Can we distinguish between the two conditions without the help of a cellular biologist Yes.Albino animals have fully unpigmented red eyes.Leucistic animals,on the other hand, never completely lose pigment from the eye, although they can have blue eyes due to a partial loss of pigment.
Why don’t we see more albino or leucistic birds Because the lack of melanin reduces the strength and lastingness of the affected birds’ feathers, making them more easily broken.Additionally, the birds’ vision and hearing are negatively affected, making them less able to hunt. The brighter feathers and lack of patterning also make them easier for attackers to see.

Wildfires are getting worse across the world. Twenty-one years of satellite data shows severe fires have more than doubled in frequency since 2003 and the six most extreme years since records began have come since 2017, causing more deaths and destruction.
One European Union (EU) pilot programme, the Life Landscape Fire Project (LLFP), is now using hungry mountain goats to prevent wildfires before they start. It involves a combination of controlled fires and hungry goats grazing (吃草) to reduce plant cover that can dry up in summer and fuel the rapid spread of fires. Controlled fires help burn older plants that goats don’t eat, allowing fresh green vegetation to grow which grazers like goats and cows do eat. The experimental project pays shepherds (牧羊人) to guide their goats to areas where they want the plant cover reduced, and they also build shelters and watering areas to attract free grazers to the desired spots. That’s how mountain goats and cows become mobile fire prevention units.
LLFP director Mota oversees this EU-funded project. “We are in one of the most affected regions by wildfires, historically speaking,” said Mota. “Last September we had a wildfire with extreme behaviour that burned almost everything in its path. But our parcels managed to keep green.” A video from Mota showed that one half of the mountain was black and burned and the other green, the parts which controlled fires and hungry goats had made unlikely to burn. “We believe this proves that, when scaled up from a pilot project to a full solution, it works,” he added.
The sound of goat bells rings out as the goats move peacefully on their way, offering hope in a region directly in the path of climate chaos.

From the day Tony was born,Jeff refused to let his son’s disabilities hold him back.Tony has cerebral palsy (大脑性瘫痪),making it difficult for him to walk.Determined to show Tony that he could pursue his dream of being an athlete, when he was 15 years old,Jeff signed him up with an organisation that helps kids with disabilities engage in endurance (耐力) sports.
“It gave me a new perspective on life,”Tony said.He even dreamt of walking a marathon one day. From then on,Tony became addicted to racing, and Jeff also wanted to be a part of it.Though Jeff had been a minor league baseball player, endurance sports were new to him.He made up his mind to achieve Tony’s dream and started doing things he never dreamt about. He began waking up at 4 am.So he could run in the silent street while pushing Tony in a special wheelchair called a racing chair.Every morning,he drove himself to run increasingly longer distances.Soon,he and Tony were entering 5K races, then on to Ironman triathlons.
Finishing the Ironman competition in under 16 hours would be another dream for Jeff and Tony. The big day came. The race began with a swim in the river.Jeff helped Tony into a kayak (皮艇).With one end of a rope tied to a belt around his back and the other end to the kayak,Jeff eased himself into the water.Swimming while dragging another person is quite tough. The pair completed the swim in 90 minutes, and then it was on to the next leg—a bicycle ride.Their custom-built bike had an additional seat in the back for Tony that faced backward.
After completing the demanding bike part in roughly nine hours, they set their sights on the final leg of the race—a marathon with Jeff pushing Tony in the racing chair. They’d been competing for 10 hours, with only 6 hours left for the race. The first 7 kilometres went smoothly.

Clenching his teeth,Jeff used all his strength and willpower to push the racing chair. The audience couldn’t help cheering for them. With thunderous applause, they were close to the finishing line.Jeff knew it was time to fulfil Tony’s wish.
Jeff handed Tony his rolling walker (助行器).Not that long ago,Tony could barely walk several steps. But after years of painstaking practice,he increased his step count and was determined to finish the race on his own. After 15 hours and 5 minutes, with just five minutes to spare, the father and son crossed the finishing line together. As the crowd engulfed and cheered on an overwhelmed Tony,a weary Jeff kept a low profile.“He didn’t want his finishing line moment,” said Tony.“He wanted it to be mine.”

It’s a hot night on the western coast of Sri Lanka. A team of volunteers is patrolling (巡逻) a popular tourist beach on the outskirts of Colombo, searching for turtle (海龟) nesting sites. They gather in a circle, digging in the sand at dusk.
Turtle eggs have long been stolen as a food source by coastal communities, but more recently it is human activity of another kind that has proved a greater threat. As the city has expanded, restaurants and other tourist facilities have mushroomed along most parts of the country’s western coast, bringing in more people, noisy music, and much plastic and chemical waste, all of which harms turtle nesting during the reproducing season.
Aware that life for the turtles was becoming more difficult, Katuwawala, one of the volunteers, expanded the activities of the Pearl Protectors to include regular patrols. Working with the coastguard, the volunteers help to find eggs laid in hazardous areas and remove them to a safe nesting place on the beach until they hatch.
Nevertheless, a significant threat to the turtles comes from the illegal hunters because once they find a nest, all the eggs are usually taken. “Certain restaurants and hotels sell these eggs to the foreigners as a novel food, at a good price,” Katuwawala says. “So turtle eggs now have commercial demand.” He says patrolling alone will not create a lasting impact on turtle conservation and it needs to be combined with educating coastal communities.
Another volunteer, Lara, agrees. “It makes a difference to the community in how they perceive the problem and the solution,” she says. “And it makes a difference to the volunteers in how they approach the problem. It bridges the gap.”
In the southern part of the island, the Turtle Conservation Project has gone a step further by employing hunters to protect nests, providing an alternative income.
“When you finally see the baby turtles going into the ocean, it’s really nice to know that you helped a life to live,” Fernando, another volunteer, says.

From Beijing, more than 400 kilometres away, all the way up north, the temperature gradually drops. With the emergence of fire prevention warnings, Saihanba (塞罕坝), known as a “miracle on earth”, begins to come into view. In October, the cold wind blowing from Siberia has dyed (染色) Saihanba golden.
In Mongolian, Saihanba means beautiful high mountains. However, Saihanba was a desert of “yellow sand covering the sky and flying birds without inhabiting trees” 62 years ago. Whenever the north wind blew, the windy sand located in Inner Mongolia would drive southward, reaching Beijing and Tianjin.
After more than half a century of forest plantation, people who have come to Saihanba can hardly imagine the arid (干旱的) scene. Occasionally, a gust of wind passes by, and they would just sigh and shout how strong the wind is, but they would not feel sandblasted (喷沙).
One day, watchmen Liu Jun and Wang Juan were observing the surrounding forest area on a watchtower in Saihanba Forest Farm in Hebei Province. Liu is in charge of the observation and Wang keeps recording.
“Spring and autumn are the critical fire prevention periods for our forest farm. We need to stay here for three months, have three meals a day, work and live in the building,” says Liu Jun, who has been engaged in observation for 13 years. Simple as it looks, the job is quite the burden on their shoulders. Only by enjoying loneliness can they keep this forest safe and sound.
Saihanba today is not only a “green Great Wall” for windbreak and sand fixation (固化), but also a timber (林木) source. Many people would doubt why the trees that have grown up here are to be cut down in a planned way. Liu explains that most of the trees here are planted forest, and the forest species are relatively single, unlike natural forests that can adapt on their own and survive the fittest. The selective cutting of plantation forests is more like thinning when farmers plant crops. Only in this way can the nutrient area be expanded and diseased plants also be removed to ensure the healthy development of the forest areas.
( )5.What can be learnt about Saihanba from the first three paragraphs
A.It is suffering from a cold wind.
B.Its desertification is under control.
C. It is weathering a sandstorm.
D.Its climate is beyond expectation.
( )6.Which of the following best describes the watchmen
A.Bored but attentive.
B.Simple but responsible.
C. Tired but engaged.
D.Lonely but committed.
( )7.What does the underlined word “thinning” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Making something more beautiful and attractive.
B.Making something stronger and healthier.
C. Making something less thick or dense.
D.Making something more valuable and useful.
( )8.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Green Guardian
B.The Sand Wasteland
C. The Timber Farm
D.The Golden Miracle

Batik is a traditional Indonesian colouring method used to make designs and drawings,
usually on cloth and finished textiles.Batik makers use dyes(染料)—colours added to cloth and other materials—to create the colourful designs.
In central Indonesia, many batik makers are using natural dyes instead of manufactured ones. The natural dyes come from mangrove forests (红树林) that grow along the coast. The trees grow in salty water on a complex system of tall roots.
Mangrove forests serve an important purpose. They provide a barrier against destructive ocean waves called tsunamis. They are also important to underwater creatures like fish and crabs. And the forests are more effective in taking in carbon dioxide,a gas linked to climate change, than rainforests or similar environments.
Erwin Ardli is a mangrove ecologist at Indonesia’s Jenderal Soedirman University. He says the natural dyes may not be as bright as manufactured ones. But they are better for the environment.
Ardli said,“We’ve seen the interest in natural dyes increasing, and especially for middle-class and upper-class people, they seem proud to wear clothes using these natural dyes rather than synthetic (合成的) ones.”
Iiting Budiarti, who owns an art gallery that shows batik designs, agreed with Ardli, adding that objects with natural dyes can cost two or three times more than the synthetic ones.
Forty-eight-year-old Sodikin is a batik maker.Over the past four years,he and his group of batik makers have changed from using chemical materials for dyes to mangrove-based products. The change has reduced their costs and helped the environment.Harvesting involves gathering a handful of what looks like string beans—seeds within a covering.Sodikin then takes the mangrove fruit home to make natural dyes from them.
“We use natural materials so as to preserve the mangrove forest at the same time,”Sodikin said.“We do not cut down the trees,” he added,“and we only take fruits or leaves that have fallen.”

You’ve probably heard that brick-and-mortar retail (实体零售) is in trouble.Even industry giants are closing hundreds of stores.Given retail’s gradual change from physical stores to mobile and e-commerce (电子商务),you may be wondering,“What will retail look like in the future ” Nobody knows. But here are a few things you can expect to see based on current technology.
Super-fast delivery is coming.Today, the normal practice is two-day delivery. But if you’ve been paying attention, you know that’s changing. In fact,up to 25% of consumers said that they would abandon their orders if one-day delivery wasn’t available.Of course, that’s just the beginning.Two-hour delivery is coming in the foreseeable future, and an e-commerce company has already been trying 30-minute delivery.
Your kitchen will resupply itself. You won’t have to worry about running out of essentials like coffee, pet food or snacks because your containers will sense stocks (库存) and replace those items without you having to lift a finger. No more waking up to find your coffee jar is empty or to make a last-minute rush to the grocery store because you forget to buy pet food.
Know exactly what’s in stock and where to get it.Have you ever gone to a store hoping to buy something, only to learn that it was out of stock A new feature from smart home allows people to ask the assistant to find in-stock products at the closest store. For example:“Hi,where can I find the wireless headphones ” The assistant will tell you how many stores have it right away and how close they are.Of course,it isn’t currently available for all stores in all locations, but you can already see the future when it becomes standard.
Convenience, experience, and options—retail will take on a new look.

Feeling a hug from each other via the Internet may be a possibility in the near future.A research team led by City University of Hong Kong developed a wireless, soft e-skin that can both detect and deliver the sense of touch, and form a touch network allowing one-to-multiuser interaction. It offers great potential for improving the distance touch communication.
While there are numerous devices in the market to simulate (模拟) the sense of touch in the virtual world, they provide only touch sensing or touch response. The uniqueness of the novel e-skin is that it can perform self-sensing and touch-reproducing functions on the same interface.
The e-skin is a 7 cm×10 cm,4.2 mm-thick device containing 16 flexible actuators (驱动器),a microcontroller unit,a Bluetooth module, and other electronics on a flexible circuit board. The actuator serves as the core part of the e-skin. Once the actuator is pressed and released by a force,a current is produced to provide electrical signals that are turned into digital signals by a converter (转换器) and then sent to another e-skin via Bluetooth. When the signals are received,a current is caused to reproduce the touch response on the receiver’s e-skin through mechanical vibrations (振动).The process can be reversed to deliver vibrations from the receiver’s e-skin to the corresponding actuator of the sender’s.
The e-skin can communicate with Bluetooth devices and send data through the Internet with smartphones and computers to perform long-distance touch, and to form a touch Internet of Things (IoT) system, where one-to-one and one-to-multiple touch delivery could be realised.Friends and family in different places could use it to “feel” each other. This form of touch overcomes the limitations of space and greatly reduces the sense of distance in human communication.
Next, the research team will focus on practical applications for people with visual disability, who could wear the e-skin to gain remote directional guidance and read Braille messages.

Ⅱ.七选五
Happy, angry, amazed—these are some of the emotions we like to express these days when we’re sending a message on our phones! That’s why many of us now add little pictures to our texts to brighten up someone’s mobile screen and we’re also using them as a quick way of telling someone how we’re feeling.1.
Emojis came from Japan in the late 1990s,as a non-verbal expression of emotion, which was a substitute for facial expression in face-to-face communication. It was once believed that emojis were just decorative, additional and unnecessary. After being introduced into the Unicode Standard in 2010,emojis have become popular and attracted the attention of many scholars.2. They show that there are four main motivations: information transmission, conversation strategies, entertainment and efficiency.
Different styles of emojis can affect the circumstances under which they appear, which provides an angle for analysing the usages and functions of different emojis. It has been found that the emojis usually occur before or after a complete statement or question, and rarely appear in the middle of a sentence.3.
Researchers have found that when netizens communicate with casual acquaintances, the diversity and the preference of using emojis to express information are significantly lower than those of family members, close friends, classmates and colleagues.4. In contrast to it,the usage of emojis will be limited when they’re communicating with people who are more distant from each other.
5. People have not reached a common understanding of the same emoji;even there are significant differences. In task-based communication, people may prefer to use notional words to convey information clearly so as to avoid communication difficulties caused by different interpretations of emojis.
A.The emoji has its internal ambiguity of expression.
B.Emojis have become a vital tool for communication.
C.Emojis are named as the world’s fastest growing language.
D.There are many questionnaires about the reasons to use emojis.
E.People can choose more emojis when facing close relationships.
F.People also use them to show their enthusiasm and encouragement.
G.Besides,it is common to repeat emojis to express the intensity of emotions.

More and more people have a tendency to use air conditioners, as air conditioners have clear advantages over electric fans, making it possible for electric fans to completely disappear in the near future.

Forty-five minutes into the class, the dancers didn’t even look tired. While watching dancers quietly plié (下蹲屈膝) with complete control was calming, watching the floor exercises that came next was anything but.The sequences were short but became increasingly complicated,so I stopped paying attention to the directions I couldn’t follow, and simply allowed myself to observe the remarkable results. At the end of the class,I applauded and watched the dancers leave the stage. They had already accomplished so much with their day,and I was left in complete awe,not just of my inadequacy, but also of their effort.
As I headed home,I tried to think of the last time I worked as hard as those dancers at anything in my own life.So much has been made easier by technology: I can listen to any song I want, whenever I want.I can have pretty much anything delivered.I can stay in touch with friends without making the time to see them. But instead of taking shortcuts, maybe I should look for challenges.Because once you start doing hard things, they become easier, and then you know you can do them.
With the determination and discipline of ballet dancers still fresh in my mind,I commit to doing some hard things: I get back in the habit of practising a language I’ve been trying to learn.I lift heavier weights.I take the stairs.I write the essay.
Nothing demands as much of me as what ballet demands of those dancers every day. They inspire me.So,I guess what I’m trying to say is that sometimes a fitness class can change your life, even if you’re not the one taking it.

Jim Johnson,a mail carrier, was an institution in the leafy Westmoreland,Westhaven and Westover Hills neighbourhoods, just north of downtown Wilmington, where he delivered much more than the mail.He knew all the kids and their pets by name;he carried in the groceries;he took note of unlocked doors, offered gardening advice, and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball. When he wasn’t doing all that,Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns (草坪) to ensure the local postal service did not fall short of its daily promise.
Though the postal service is often disparaged now,the trust in local postal service lives on.In many communities, that trust is won every day when life-saving medicine, greeting cards, social security checks, college acceptance letters—even the bills—appear in mailboxes in front of the houses.
After more than three decades,Jim approached his final days on the job much like any other. He drove a boxy postal truck to North DuPont Road for the first unofficial stop of the day.Butch,a dog who belonged to one of the neighbours, was waiting just like every day before. And just like every day before,he got into the jump seat and they were off.On the route,Jim and Butch had become inseparable. Now,the dog and the mailman would ride off to retirement together. At every stop,Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own. There were tears and laughter, and hugs filled with warm memories.
It’s been 33 years since Jim left the route, but we are still reminded of the deep bond established between community and letter carrier. That’s what the postal service means to us.

How to Build Healthy Habits That Last
Developing healthy habits can feel challenging, but with the right approach, you can make positive changes that stick. Here are some practical tips to help you succeed.
1. When starting a new habit, aim for small, achievable goals. For example, instead of saying “I’ll exercise for an hour daily”,begin with 15-minute walks three times a week. This helps build confidence and makes the habit feel manageable.
Create reminders to keep you on track.Place your running shoes by the door or set phone alerts for water breaks.2. Visual cues work especially well because they serve as constant physical reminders of your commitment.
Track your progress.Keep a simple journal or use a habit-tracking app.Seeing your success recorded can be very motivating.3. Celebrate small victories like completing one week of your new routine.
Don’t be discouraged by occasional slip-ups.Everyone misses a day sometimes.4. What matters most is getting back on track the next day.Progress isn’t about being perfect, but about consistent effort.
Finally, connect your new habit to something you enjoy. If you dislike running but love music, create an upbeat playlist for your walks.5. This positive connection makes the habit more enjoyable and sustainable.
A.The key is to start with realistic expectations.
B.Healthy habits are only suitable for young people.
C.Pairing activities you love increases your chances of success.
D.Buying expensive exercise equipment will speed up your progress.
E.This gradual approach prevents you from feeling overwhelmed.
F.Remember that improvement matters more than perfection.
G.Scientific research shows habits form in exactly 21 days.

Why don’t we see more albino or leucistic birds Because the lack of melanin reduces the strength and lastingness of the affected birds’ feathers, making them more easily broken.
Additionally, the birds’ vision and hearing are negatively affected, making them less able to hunt. The brighter feathers and lack of patterning also make them easier for attackers to see.
( )1.What can we learn about Australia’s zebra finch
A. It is one of the rarest birds in Australia.
B. It is mostly covered with bright orange feathers.

( )5.What do we know about the LLFP
A.It protects mountain goats.
B.It employs integrated methods.
C. It has been conducted across Europe.
D.It wins shepherds’ unconditional support.
( )6.What do the underlined words “the desired spots” refer to
A.Free grazers’ favourite destinations.
B.Places far from shepherds’ activities.
C. Spots with abundant water resources.
D.Areas in need of vegetation reduction.
( )7.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The influence of wildfires.
B.The effectiveness of the LLFP.
C. The challenges faced by the LLFP.
D.The importance of preventing fires.
( )8.What message is conveyed in the last paragraph
A.Goats stand as a symbol of peace.
B.Goats ring the alarm for quick action.
C. Goats provide hope for wildfire prevention.
D.Goats offer an ideal solution to climate change.

( )5.What is the unique feature of the e-skin
A.It provides hugs for users.
B.It builds a social network.

( )7.What can we learn about e-skin
A.It strengthens bonds across distance.
B.Its converter vibrates when working.
C. It sends electrical signals to receivers.
D.Its system delivers touch with phones.

They show that there are four main motivations: information transmission, conversation strategies,
entertainment and efficiency.

It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had for years:Watching the annual Perseid meteor shower (流星雨).But this time,as the meteors flashed across the sky,I,a junior girl, began to question,“Could my lifelong love for astronomy be more than a hobby ”
I grew up in a small town, where even graduating from high school was not a given for many students. But I was driven to pursue my education, and like my best friend’s dad—a pharmacist (药剂师),one of the few professional role models in my neighbourhood, therefore,I chose to major in pharmacy, the science of preparing medicines,at the University of North Carolina.
The university was only a 3.5-hour drive away, but it felt across the universe. In the weeks since I began my pharmacy degree,I had met people with jobs and PhDs in different branches of science I had never considered—neuroscience, archaeology, and even astrophysics.Their passion and knowledge opened my eyes to worlds I had never imagined. As my birthday and the Perseid meteor shower approached,I was faced with a decision:Should I stick to my long-standing plans or take a step into the unknown
Ultimately,a solar eclipse (日食) helped me make my decision. As the Moon gradually shaded the Sun,the world darkened around me.The stillness of the water, the desperate calls of birds, and the fading sunset deeply moved me.I knew what I had to do.I dropped out of the pharmacy school to pursue previously unimagined options.
Facing years of challenges and growth,I worked odd jobs before earning a second degree in physics, starting a PhD in astronomy, and realised that the night sky’s vastness inspired me to overcome doubts and follow my dreams. As I approached the final year of my PhD,I realised that growing up with the night sky gave me a valuable gift.It gave me an insight into life:On the scale of our vast universe, our individual needs, desires, fears, and insecurities shrink to insignificance,
bringing humanity together. It liberated me from allowing earthly worries, shame,or self-doubt to stand in the way of pursuing new dreams.

When I was a child, the new year’s activity for my family was making dumplings, but it’s been years since I last experienced the uniquely carefree comfort and connection I felt during those moments. My family has changed a lot,and gatherings like these simply don’t come together with the same ease as they once did.
This year,I came home in the evening to a dark house with pieces missing.I noticed things that I wouldn’t have noticed before, like how my family slept earlier and got up later and how my dog had more trouble jumping up on my bed. After all,it’s easier to become blind to its subtle changes when you occupy it virtually every day of the year, and much harder when you must be exposed to months of accumulated changes all at once.
Personally, the most precious childhood privilege is not the free extra snacks from flight attendants, but the privilege of thinking of the people and relationships around you with a sense of permanence.I mean this in the sense that it escaped my eight-year-old brain to think about how my parents were aging as I did or about the sacrifices they made for me until suddenly,I was an adult as they were.
I’ll turn 20 in a couple of months,so I’ve been seized with a feeling of adulthood, which feels far stronger than the transition into legal adulthood at 18 ever felt.It seems as if the “teen” part of “19” keeps me attached to the same category as the one my newly 13-year-old self occupied,
carrying with it a certain comfort in the social allowances made for the immaturity inherent (固有的) to youth. But marching into 20 is different.
I’d so desperately wanted to move away and get a taste of independence upon starting college, but now I know that such freedom comes with loss and responsibility. Now I start to understand the governance of a circularity (循环性) inherent to our lives and have a newfound appreciation for the things that remain the same.

Yet so many of us have difficulty adapting to change. We deny it,resist it or attempt to control it,the result of which is almost always some combination of stress, anxiety and burnout.
It doesn’t have to be that way.No doubt, change can,and often does, hurt. But with the right mindset,it can also be a force for growth. It’s not as if we have any choice in the matter.Like it or not, life is change. We’d be wise to shift our position from useless resistance to being in conversation with change instead.
A concept called allostasis can help.Developed in the late 1980s by Peter Sterling and Joseph Eyer, allostasis is defined as “stability through change”.In other words, the way to stay stable through the process of change is by changing,at least to some extent.
From neuroscience to pain science and psychology, allostasis has become the standard model for understanding change in the scientific community. The brain is at its best when it is constantly making new connections.Overcoming pain,be it physical or psychological,is not about resistance (which often worsens the experience) or trying to get back to where you were before a distressing event or situation. It’s about balancing acceptance with problem-solving and moving forward to a new normal.
Yet this concept is still little known to ordinary people and it is time to start practising it now.Over the past few years, the river of change has been flowing mercilessly, and it shows no signs of letting up.Hardly a decade after the widespread adoption of social media,a new technology that may be far more powerful, artificial intelligence,is being widely used.
It’s like what our friend Heraclitus advised:Take part in change by focusing on what we can control and trying to let go of what we can’t.Our ability to work with these changes is directly related to our life satisfaction.

(2025·广东茂名二模)

Batik is a traditional Indonesian colouring method used to make designs and drawings, usually on cloth and finished textiles.Batik makers use dyes(染料)—colours added to cloth and other materials—to create the colourful designs.

On a sunny Sunday morning,I went to my first ballet class. But I didn’t do any dancing. This was Class on Stage,a rare opportunity to watch dancers warm up during their daily 75-minute class.I went in knowing that I would be impressed by the physicality of it.Top athletes aren’t born; they’re made.

A
(2025·安徽合肥高三检测)
As I approached the final year of my PhD,I realised that growing up with the night sky gave me a valuable gift.It gave me an insight into life:On the scale of our vast universe, our individual needs, desires, fears, and insecurities shrink to insignificance, bringing humanity together.

I’ll turn 20 in a couple of months,so I’ve been seized with a feeling of adulthood, which feels far stronger than the transition into legal adulthood at 18 ever felt.It seems as if the “teen” part of “19” keeps me attached to the same category as the one my newly 13-year-old self occupied, carrying with it a certain comfort in the social allowances made for the immaturity inherent (固有的) to youth.

C
(2025·全国九省10月联考)
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus taught that you can’t step into the same river twice, for you aren’t the same person at each visit, and the water is ever flowing. It is a powerful way to represent the reality that everything is always changing.
