三、阅读理解(本题共8小题;每小题2.5分,满分20分)
A
Have you ever seen the auroras(极光) in the sky Cosmic radiation(宇宙辐射) creates these pretty lights in the North and South Pole areas. It seems that cosmic radiation is a beautiful gift from space. But for some people, it can be dangerous.
A 53-year-old flight attendant in South Korea, who spent about 1,022 hours flying each year, passed away due to cancer. A South Korean court connected his death to great exposure (暴露) to cosmic radiation. During his career, nearly half of his flights crossed the areas in and around the North Pole, where cosmic radiation is extremely strong.
① Cosmic radiation from space is hitting Earth nonstop, coming from both the sun and other stars in the Milky Way.
② Earth's magnetic field (磁场) and atmosphere(大气层) protect us from most cosmic radiation. The magnetic field is strongest near the equator and weakest at the poles. People living at higher latitudes(纬度), like in Heilongjiang province, are exposed to a little bit more cosmic radiation than those living at lower latitudes, like in Hainan province. Also, when you go higher in an airplane, the thin atmosphere increases exposure to cosmic radiation.
③ For flight attendants crossing polar areas and for astronauts in space, cosmic radiation can create health risks. NASA reported that the radiation exposure faced by astronauts spending six months in space is the same as having 1,000 chest X-rays.
④ However, what makes cosmic radiation dangerous also makes it useful. The high speed and energy of cosmic radiation have provided wonderful ideas for treating tumors(肿瘤). Scientists can now produce man-made radiation similar to cosmic radiation. Compared to the present ways of treating tumors, it can kill tumors better with less damage to healthy parts of the body around them.
26. The death of the flight attendant is believed to have something to do with ____.
A. long flight hours B. lower latitudes
C. strong cosmic radiation D. a family history of cancer
27. The sentence "Luckily, our planet is well-protected." should be put in ____.
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
28. Astronauts are exposed to more cosmic radiation because ____.
a. they are closer to the sun and stars
b. they are at higher latitudes in space
c. space suit cannot prevent cosmic radiation
d. there is not much atmosphere protecting them
A. ac B. ba C. ad D. cd
29. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Cosmic radiation is very dangerous.
B. People can produce cosmic radiation.
C. Earth is filled with cosmic radiation.
D. Cosmic radiation helps fight cancer.

Long ago, there was a judge who was famous throughout the land. When two people argued, the judge was always able to find a solution that was fair to both people, whether they were rich or poor.
One day, the judge went to a busy market. Merchants (商人) were selling live chickens, fruits, vegetables, and just about anything else you could think of. As he walked through the market, the judge saw a large crowd had gathered outside a shop that sold live chickens. The judge walked near the crowd and asked a woman what was going on.
“A poor farmer was carrying a heavy sack (麻布大袋),” said the woman. “He accidentally fell down and dropped the sack on a chicken, killing it. The chicken belonged to the rich and greedy merchant who owns this shop,” she said, pointing to the shop.
The judge could hear two men shouting at each other. “It was lucky I was passing by,” thought the judge. “There is clearly an argument going on, and I am going to solve it.”
“Excuse me!” said the judge in a loud voice to the crowd. “Please let me through.” ①When people turned and saw the judge, they quickly moved aside to let him pass through.
The two men who were arguing saw the judge coming near. ②Then they stopped shouting and bowed to the judge. “Please help us solve our argument,” they said.

The judge asked to see the dead chicken. “It is quite a small young chicken,” said the judge.
“That is true,” said the merchant. “But in another two years that chicken would have grown large and fat. I can get 100 coins for a large, fat chicken. This farmer owes me 100 coins!”

“I order you to pay this merchant 100 coins,” the judge said to the farmer. ④The crowd stood there with their mouth open in surprise. How could the farmer ever pay The greedy merchant was overjoyed.
The judge turned to the merchant. “How much grain does a chicken eat in two years ” asked the judge.
“One large sack of grain,” said the merchant. He exaggerated (夸张) to prove the high price he charged for his dead chicken.
“By killing this chicken, the farmer has saved you a large sack of grain,” said the judge. “I order you to give the sack of grain you have saved to the farmer.”
The merchant turned pale and hung his head. A large sack of grain was worth much more than 100 coins.
“I forgive this man for killing my chicken,” said the merchant. “I will take no money from him, as long as I do not have to give him a sack of grain.”
“As you wish,” said the judge, who was seen to smile as he walked away.

Different from Earth Day which falls on April 22 every year, Earth Hour has been known for its “lights off” moment. On March 22, 2025, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM, millions turned off their lights to show they cared about the Earth. This year’s Earth Hour, with the theme (主题) “Create the Biggest Hour for Earth”, was even more important because it shared the same day as World Water Day. However, it’s not enough to have such an hour every year. What matters is how we can be kinder to the earth every day.
Planet-friendly food
You might not realize it, the meat industry has a huge influence on forests around the world. Large numbers of trees are cut down to make space for soy (大豆) and other plants that are used to feed animals. Have a chat with your parents about going meat-free, even for a few days every week. Also, foods like vegetables, fruit and nuts are helping the planet.
Go green and save money, too
Electricity (电) produced by burning fuels like oil, coal and gas causes global warming and pollution. Ask your parents how they heat your home and suggest using green energy like wind or solar power (太阳能). Another tip is to remember to turn off the electricity whenever you leave a room. Cutting down on screen time is actually good for both your health and the earth.
Waste Less, Help more
Waste is a big problem! We’ve talked about saving electricity. What about food waste Every year, around 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted around the world. That’s one-third of the total amount, which can feed up to 1.26 billion people. Try to talk to your parents about buying a proper amount of food. More importantly, find some ways online for leftover food at home.
