Many people think that helping others is just doing good things for free. But for most volunteers, it is a special journey full of growth. Last summer vacation, my friends and I took part in a volunteer program to help kids in a mountain village.
The village was far away and the roads were not smooth. It took us three hours to get there. The local children lived a simple life and some of them had no extra money to buy storybooks or stationery. Before we set off, we collected lots of books, pens and notebooks from our schoolmates. During the days we stayed there, we divided ourselves into small groups. Some of us taught the kids English and math; some organized interesting games to cheer them up. I was in charge of telling stories and drawing pictures with the younger kids. They were quiet and shy at first, but soon they laughed and played happily with us.
We only stayed there for a week, but the experience left a deep impression on all of us. We used to complain about our busy life and strict parents. Amber is a special kind of fossil formed by ancient plant resin(树脂). For thousands or even millions of years, it has kept the secrets of nature well. Looking at a piece of amber is just like opening a window to the distant past.
Long long ago, many kinds of pine and fir trees produced thick, sticky resin. When the weather was hot, the resin flowed down the tree trunks slowly. Sometimes small insects, tiny leaves or thin flower petals would get stuck in the soft resin. As time went by, more resin covered them completely. Later, the trees fell down and were buried under soil and stones. After millions of years of great pressure and chemical changes, the soft resin finally turned into hard, clear amber.
Most amber looks yellow or light brown. Inside it, the small creatures and plant parts remain almost the same as they were long ago. Scientists love studying amber very much. From these natural treasures, they can learn about what plants grew and what insects lived on the Earth millions of years ago. It is hard for us to get such clear and complete information from other fossils.
However, real wild amber is not easy to find today. People cut down too many ancient trees and damage natural environments. The places where amber forms are also being destroyed. Now more and more people have realized the problem. They are trying their best to protect forests and wild plants, so that nature can keep recording its wonderful stories for future generations.Amber is not just a beautiful stone.
