Fisayo Longe started her fashion label Kai Collective to celebrate all female forms—not just the western idea of beauty. “I feel my clothes transform (使转化) you into a woman who is more confident,” says Longe.
Born in London and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, before returning to the UK when she was 15, Longe’s original outlet for her love of fashion was her blog Mirror Me. Having a passion for travel, Longe would pick up fabrics (布料) from the countries she visited and make clothes for herself, which she posted on social media. As her creations started to become a hit, the seed for her own brand was planted.
“I wanted something I could put 100% of my creativity into, something that belonged to me and women like me,” explains the business owner, who recalls going into a high street store and the jeans not fitting her body very well.
Longe says, “I’ve always wanted to build that kind of community of women because, having grown up in Nigeria, I feel some women are made to feel they have to dim (使暗淡) their light—we don’t realize our power. Things are all centred around men and marriage. I want to build a community that focuses on our own value.”
With no formal fashion training, Longe set up Kai Collective four years ago with money borrowed from her mum. Longe admitted that she was a green hand when she started, giving an example of heading to Turkey with her mother to find a company to produce her designs. “That’s not the way to find producers,” she says. “It’s much better to go to trade shows.”
But whatever she’s doing, it’s obviously successful, with the brand featured in an Elle magazine cover shoot with the model Adwoa Aboah, as well as in Beyonce’s black-owned businesses list.
4. How did Longe express her love of fashion at first
A. By setting up her own brand. B. By making her clothes while travelling.
C. By visiting high street stores frequently. D. By putting her designs on social media.
5. What is Longe trying to do
A. To help women realize their dreams.
B. To encourage women to find their own value.
C. To inspire women to live independently.
D. To call on women to build a community.
6. What can we learn about Longe when she first started her business
A. She was afraid of failure. B. She got formal fashion training.
C. She lacked some experience. D. She hunted for producers at trade shows.
7. Which of the following can best describe Longe according to the passage
A. Creative and confident. B. Fashionable and proud.
C. Energetic and traditional. D. Generous and wealthy.
C
Everglades National Park is located in the state of Florida. It is the largest wilderness in the entire country and makes up 25% of the wetlands in the state. The Everglades is home to several rare and endangered species. It is also the third largest national park in the US, after Death Valley National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Each year, about 1 million tourists visit the park. On a global level, it has been announced as a World Heritage Site.
Unlike most other national parks, Everglades National Park was created to protect an ecosystem (生态系统) from being damaged. In 1947, President Harry Truman spoke at the official opening of Everglades National Park, saying the goal of creating the park was to protect forever a wild area that could never be replaced.
10,000 different islands make up Everglades National Park. There exists natural wildlife on each of these islands. The Everglades is home to about 30 species that are endangered. In addition, more than 350 bird species and 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish live within the park. The Everglades is also home to 40 species of mammals (哺乳动物) .
There are many ways to explore the Everglades. Visitors can see alligators (短 吻 鳄 ) while
hiking the Anhinga Trail. The Everglades is one of the few places on Earth where freshwater alligators and saltwater crocodiles live in the same area. Visitors using airboats are likely to see large groups of birds. Some visitors might enjoy riding bicycles through Shark Valley. Others may want to move slowly through the water where they can see insects and wildlife closely.
According to experts, changes to the Everglades are becoming a danger to several different kinds of wildlife. They say it is a result of actions the US government began more than 50 years ago, and settlers began even earlier.

Facebook has confirmed that it’s developing a version of Instagram for children under 13 years old that gives kids the chance to connect with friends and family without seeing ads or being targeted by cheaters .
But as any caregiver or parent knows, screens are addictive. Many adults are glued to their smartphones, computers, and televisions. And children are even less prepared to resist (抵挡) the lure. As is reported, kids between the ages of 8 and 12 already spend 1,200 hours a year in front of screens. What’s more, child-protection supporters also worry that Facebook, which owns Instagram, won’t be able to protect young users’ privacy or stop them from cyberbullying.
Erin Wilkey, content director at the nonprofit Common Sense Media, says, “Social media could benefit younger kids if it’s done thoughtfully. But Facebook’s track record shows the company may not really do what it promises. Plus, there are already ways for children to connect with family and friends online. Do they really need another app to make them spend more time on their devices ”
The relationship between kids and social media is more complicated (复杂的) than it seems. A
2020 survey conducted by Common Sense Media found that even though social media use was linked to depression and anxiety, many teens also saw social media as a way to access very important information about their mental and physical health and connect with their peers.
Despite the protest, Facebook doesn’t seem to slow its plans to roll out the app. So parents can minimize the potentially (潜在地) negative influences. Parents can create a set of rules that details how much screen time kids are allowed each week and what they can watch. It’s not perfect, but it can help families balance online time with exercise, and real-life social interactions (互动) that are necessary to children’s well-being.
12. What does the underlined word “lure” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Attraction. B. Connection. C. Suffering. D. Pressure.
13. What can we infer from Erin Wilkey’s words
A. Facebook often breaks its promise.
B. Social media do good to little children.
C. Apps intended for children are necessary.
D. Facebook doesn’t have to develop its new app.
14. What are parents advised to do in the last paragraph
A. Keep their kids off Facebook. B. Show their kids real social skills.
C. Stress negative influences online. D. Balance their online and offline time.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Benefits of Instagram for Kids B. Facebook’s Plan for Kids’ Instagram
C. Concerns About Instagram for Kids D. Balancing Kids’ Online and Offline Time
