Many inventions from ancient China remain today. The umbrella is one of them, which hasn’t changed much in its shape, usage and beauty.
In ancient times, umbrellas were made of materials like silk, paper and bamboo, and came in different colors and designs. They were used to protect people against the sun and rain, and they were also used in some special situations. For example, a red umbrella was used at weddings(婚礼) in some places. It was the symbol of protection against bad things and difficulties that the new couple would face.
In Chinese history, the earliest umbrellas appeared during the Spring and Autumn Period(770 BC-476 BC). After the invention of paper, the oil paper umbrella came into being, and then during the Tang Dynasty, it spread to Japan and Southeast Asian countries. When modern umbrellas appeared, the oil paper umbrella was hardly seen.

Among all types of paper, Xuan paper has earned a special place in Chinese culture. The history of Xuan paper dates back to the Tang Dynasty. At that time, paper was produced in Xuancheng, Jingxian, Ningguo and Taiping. They were counties(县) under the jurisdiction(管辖范围) of Xuanzhou. Among them, the paper made in Jingxian was the best for its excellent qualities. Since most paper distribution(分发) centers were in Xuancheng, the paper was then known as Xuan paper.
Xuan paper is made from the bark(树皮) of the blue sandalwood(檀香木) tree and rice straw. The process of making it includes many procedures like washing, boiling, and drying. Each step needs a lot of time and care. The final product is soft, thin but strong. It doesn’t tear(扯破) easily and can take in a lot of ink. Because of these qualities, Xuan paper has been loved by painters and calligraphers. It helps them fully express their creative ideas and feelings.
Xuan paper is not only a material for art but also a cultural symbol. It represents the rich heritage(遗产) of the arts in Chinese history. Even in today’s modern world, Xuan paper continues to hold an important position in Chinese art and cultural traditions. Traditional Chinese art and culture are finding new life on the Internet thanks to the efforts to protect the country’s history for a new generation(一代人). The project, called China Vine(藤), is a collaboration(合作) between the United States and China. Through China Vine, the group is sharing Chinese customs and culture using modern technology.
“Many Chinese traditions are centered in the countryside, but people are moving to cities as China becomes an economic powerhouse(经济强国),” explained Kristin Congdon. Folk traditions are changing or being lost because people move to the cities for work. The Chinese view their traditional culture as an important part of China’s history. “The traditions that have been practiced for generations should be protected,” said Congdon.
To help people learn about China’s cultural heritage(遗产), China Vine’s members designed a website. Students and professors have explored Chinese villages. They took descriptions and pictures of disappearing art forms for the project. They’ve visited some towns that seldom see visitors, and recorded documentaries(纪录片) of locals as they create their art and share stories of their culture on the website.
Bachelor, who is studying Piano and Language, joined the China Vine team and said he made a life changing first trip to Beijing in January to research traditional Chinese music for China Vine. During the trip, Bachelor had the opportunity to share one of his performances in the China Conservatory of Music(音乐学院), where he will return to study music after he graduates from UCF in May.
All the website’s materials are open resources, and it means that its texts, photographs, videos, and other media can be freely used by teachers and learners. “We want to continue to add resources to the website and develop our partnerships in China so that the English speaking world can learn more about the Chinese,” said Congdon.

The Chinese Element in My Heart
Talking of the Chinese element in my heart, paper cutting comes to my mind first.
Paper cutting is a traditional Chinese folk art that has been around for over 1,500 years. When making paper cuts, people turn simple pieces of paper into beautiful designs. The paper, usually red, is folded before it is cut with scissors. The most common shapes are flowers, animals and characters from Chinese folk stories. During the Spring Festival, beautiful paper cuts are put on windows, doors and walls as symbols of wishes for good luck and a happy new year.
I value paper cutting most because it not only shows the creativity of Chinese people but also carries deep cultural meanings. It reflects the values, beliefs and customs of Chinese people. Also, it is fun and relaxing for anyone to try.

One possible version:
Hi, everyone! Welcome to the cultural week! Chinese fans are both practical tools and beautiful works of art. Here is the fan I made.
To make this fan, I first prepared materials like paper, scissors, a brush, and ink. Next, I carefully cut out two circular pieces of paper for the fan’s surface. Finally, I used the brush to paint my design on one side. The design features a traditional Chinese landscape with mountains, waterfalls, and pine trees, symbolizing harmony between nature and humanity.
This project was not only fun but also taught me patience and creativity. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. Thank you!
