Ⅴ.阅读理解(2025·烟台莱山区期末)
“How was your weekend?” “Did you see the game on TV last night?” “Isn’t the weather beautiful today?” These questions and the answers to them are examples of “small talk”—the short, friendly conversations that people have with friends and parents.
Some people avoid making small talk at work. They don’t think they should talk about things that aren’t important for the job, or their partners won’t think they are serious about their work. And some people just don’t enjoy making small talk about themselves.
▲ Knowing how to make proper small talk is a skill that can help you a lot. By making small talk, you show that you’re friendly and interested in your partners. You can become a better team member. If you don’t make small talk, others might feel uncomfortable around you and think you’re unfriendly. Peter Harper, a manager at the Apex Company in the USA said, “We always look for friendly workers who know how to communicate with each other and with our customers.”
Here are some tips for successful small talk. You can talk about safe topics such as the weather, sports, hobbies, TV programs, and famous people. You can also share some information about your family such as birthday parties and other family events, but don’t share very personal information like family problems. You can talk about the news too, but avoid topics on money, age, weight and so on.
Listening is an important part of small talk. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and ask questions. Don’t just talk about yourself. And remember to smile! Making small talk takes practice. The more you do it, the better you’ll be at making small talk!

Ⅱ.语法填空
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入适当的内容(不多于3个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
In most languages, a greeting is usually followed by “small talk”. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English speaking countries people often make small talk about the weather: “Nice day, 1. it?” “Terrible weather, 2. it?” “I don’t think it often rains here, 3. (do) it?” But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something that both people have the same opinion about. The purpose of small talk is to let both people agree on something. “He thinks she will come, 4. (do not)he?” “They
5. (be)never late for school, were they?” “It is unfair,
6. it?” “Everyone 7. (can)decide for themselves, can’t they?” This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable.

People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion or politics, so these are not suitable topics for small talk in English. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: “Great players, aren’t
8. (their)?” At bus stops, people may comment about the transport system: “The bus service 9. (be)terrible, isn’t it?” “Let’s go there by taxi, 10. we?”

Greetings and small talk are important parts of conversation in any language. The way people greet each other and the things they talk about, however, may be different from one language to another. This shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behavior of the people who speak it.

In many cultures, small talk is a big deal. Although it may seem like a meaningless conversation to pass the time or avoid an embarrassing silence, sometimes it is actually very important for communicating and connecting with others.
According to American expert Melissa Wadsworth, small talk is about finding out possibilities(可能性). Having good small talk skills is the best way to meet new people, which can lead to friendships, jobs or other goals(目标). Besides that, small talk can also encourage empathy(感同身受), making you consider what another person feels or thinks.
What’s the best way to break the ice and start talking to people? Well, some of the most common topics include the weather, hobbies, work, family and travel. These topics are all easy for people to talk about. Sometimes, it may seem a little bit difficult to start a conversation with people you don’t know. That’s OK! Everyone has this problem sometimes. Some people don’t know that making small talk is useful. They only talk about things that they think are important. As a result, they become quiet people. In fact, making small talk isn’t a waste of your time. And it can even help you communicate better.
What’s more, we should choose some right topics to talk about. The weather, the popular TV shows and sports games are all good topics. We should avoid talking about personal privacy. Family income, family problems and classmates’ looks aren’t safe topics.
Making small talk is important. Learning more skills at making small talk can help you to be a good communicator.

Being a good listener plays an important role in communication. Parents should listen to their children, so they will understand them better.Teachers should also listen to their students so that they can increase their understanding and improve relationships. Students should listen to their classmates, and then their friendship will be stronger and they will help each other.
In a word, good listening can really make us get closer to each other.
