Do you know how to talk to others politely in English? I will show you some polite and impolite ways. I hope they can help you.
☆“Could you give me five minutes?” vs “Go away.”
When you’re too busy to help your classmate, you can’t say “Go away.” Instead, you should say “Could you give me five minutes?”
☆“Excuse me.” vs “Move out of the way.”
Telling someone to “move out of the way” is very impolite. When someone is in your way, you should say, “Excuse me.”
☆“I’m afraid I can’t.” vs “No.”
It can often be difficult to decline an invitation from a friend. Saying “No” would be impolite. If you have to say no to an invitation, you’d better say “I’m afraid I can’t.”
☆ “Would you mind...?” vs “Stop it!”
If someone is doing something rude, would you like him or her to stop? You shouldn’t say “Stop talking on the phone in the cinema!” You can say “Would you mind not talking on the phone in the cinema, please?”
1.How many polite ways does the writer show us?

2.When you are busy and can’t help your classmate, what should you say?

3.What does the underlined word “decline” mean in English?

4.If you don’t want someone to smoke here, what can you say politely?

Something that I learnt from both my parents was the importance of having respect for other people. I remember one day when we were traveling on a bus and 1 sat down while other people were standing. My mother shouted at me, “ 2 immediately! You have young legs and you should care more for others.” At that time I felt embarrassed about being told off
3 , but now I understand. I think young people nowadays have lost that respect and it really makes me angry if I see them sitting down while 4 people are standing.
When it came to table manners, we had a lot of rules. For example, we weren’t allowed to start our meal 5 the oldest person had started. We had to say “thank you” when our food was served, and eat everything on our plates before we could leave the table. We couldn’t make any noise when eating. Worse than that, we were only 6 to have sweets at the weekend as a special treat if we had been good.
Although my upbringing(养育) was perhaps a bit strict compared with modern children, I’m very thankful to my parents for giving me a clear 7 in life. Even though I was sometimes 8 , I think it has made me a better person. In my view, children need clear rules, but more than that they need to learn how to get on with 9 people and they will realize being 10 is important for everyone sooner or later.

“Mom, there’s something I have to tell you.” Ula’s eyes were wide with distress(苦恼)as she spoke to me.
“What is it, sweetie?” I reached over and pushed her hair behind her ear.
“I know we weren’t supposed to do it,” she began, before telling me she’d been playing with one of her friends.
The friend had wanted to practice the CPR(心肺复苏术) they had learned in swimming class on her.
Ula started to cry. “I told her I didn’t want to do it.But she really wanted to, and I didn’t want to make her mad.” I sent a note to the other girl’s parents so they could talk to their daughter.
But something Ula had said worried me.Ula knew that what the other kid wanted to do wasn’t right. But she didn’t stand up for herself, and that frightened me.
For the rest of the day, Ula and I talked about boundaries(边界;界限) that help us, when necessary, to deal with our needs before the needs of others.Boundaries can protect us from being overworked; they can protect our belongings(物品) or health.Sometimes, they simply buy us the time(争取时间) to be alone or with a friend,to be away from the chaos(混乱) of life, to rest and to enjoy ourselves.
Ula and I imagined different friends in different situations, crying and threatening(威胁) to tell on(告发) her, and I taught her to say “no”, even in these situations.I told her that I trust her to do what is right, no matter how angry that may make someone. And I told her that I would always be there to back her up.
Now, Ula realizes that it doesn’t matter if we are 7 or 47:Learning to protect our personal boundaries is a never ending study, filled with errors(错误) in judgment(判断).With each day of our lives, we have to learn where the line is.We have to decide whether and how, on that day, we will defend(捍卫) it.
I stayed with Ula until she said, “You need to go out.” And at that moment, she reminded me of the next great lesson in boundaries:It is not enough to look out for(留意) our own limits(界限)—we must also honor them in others.
1.After hearing Ula’s story, the writer felt worried mainly because .
A.Ula’s friend had a bad influence on her
B.there was something wrong with her heart
C.Ula had trouble getting along with her friend
D.Ula couldn’t refuse others
2.By creating boundaries,we can according to the passage.
A.manage to deal with the chaos of life
B.protect ourselves from extra work
C.build better friendships with others
D.understand others’ needs better

3.What did the writer advise her daughter to do when she was asked to do what she disliked?
A.Say no to her friends no matter how they feel.
B.Refuse her friends’ requests as long as(只要) they don’t get angry.
C.Speak to her friends’ parents when she feels threatened.
D.Talk with her friends about how she truly feels.
Which of the following would the writer agree with?
A.We should respect others’ limits while defending our own.
B.Boundaries are more important for children than adults.
C.It is selfish to put our needs before others’ needs.

Asking the way is the first thing we do when we are trying to find a place in a foreign country. The way we ask for directions may make a difference to the answers we get. Here are some suggestions for you.
Use greetings and polite expressions.
Starting the conversation with a greeting is a must. If you want to get a nice answer, begin by saying “sorry” or “pardon me” first, like “Pardon me, could you please help me?” and finish with “Thank you” or “Have a nice day”.
Expand(扩展) your vocabulary.
You should know more words that you can use when getting directions. It may be useful to remember the names of the places you will visit. You also need to remember different kinds of transportation(交通运输) like the underground or the taxi when explaining your need.
Know how to ask a question correctly.
Use proper words and try not to leave any information out. It is good to ask specific(具体的) questions. In this way, you may get more chances of getting a specific answer. And you can ask a question like “Excuse me! May I ask you how to get to the Eaton Centre?” This sounds more polite than “Hi! How can I get to the Eaton Centre?”
Don’t be afraid of using landmarks(地标).
Every city in the world has its own landmarks. You can save some time if you know what the important landmarks are in the city. For example, in Beijing, one of the main landmarks is Wangfujing. You can say “My friend told me it is near and beside Wangfujing, but I can’t find it.”
There is no need to rush quickly to the place you will go, or you may get lost. And don’t worry too much about yourself if you truly get lost. We may all get lost now and then, especially when visiting a new city!
1.What is a must when you ask for directions?

2.Why do you need to ask specific questions?

3.Which city’s landmark is mentioned in the text?
