Activity 1　Reading

Read the two accounts in part A and answer the two questions on page 8. Then think about the following questions.
1．Was Anne’s decision to tell a “white lie” about liking the dress an act of responsibility towards her grandmother’s feelings，or was it a failure to be honest
Anne’s “white lie” was primarily an act of responsibility towards her grandmother’s feelings. In that moment，her priority was to protect her grandmother from the hurt and disappointment of rejection. Honesty，while important，would have been cruel and served no positive purpose at the celebratory event. This is the core ethical dilemma: the responsibility to be kind sometimes temporarily outweighs the responsibility to be brutally honest.
2．Upon overhearing the truth，should Grandma confront Anne about the dishonesty to clear the air，or should she silently accept it as a well-meaning gesture from her granddaughter to spare her feelings
I don’t think Grandma should confront Anne about the dishonesty. A responsible reaction requires understanding that the lie came from a place of love and respect，not bad intent. By choosing not to confront，the grandmother demonstrates emotional maturity and acknowledges that her gift’s true value is in the love behind it，not Anne’s approval of its style.
