I’m from an Irish family with seven children. Apart from family, music is probably the single thing that has
defined my life, and I’ve just begun to realize how interconnected the two have always been.
Mum and Dad were poor Irish farmers who came to Liverpool in the 1950s and music was never a big thing
in our house. The first artist I really liked was Elton John, and I remember when I was 11, my sister Trish bunked
off school one morning to queue up to get us two tickets to see Elton at the Liverpool Empire. That was my first
concert, in about 1975, and I’ve been a live music fan ever since. To make sure I could see everything, Trish got
me to stand on my seat while she made sure I didn’t fall off! That afternoon we also managed to get Elton’s
signature.
When punk (朋克) music arrived, my life changed forever. I was 15 and this new music and movement took
over my life. The record that forever sums up that period for me is Safety Pin Stuck in My Heart by Patrik Fitzgerald
— I heard it first on the John Peel radio show. When Saturday came, I went into town with my mates and brought
the record back to play it about 20 times in a row on our little mono record player.
I’m not sure how my family let me get away with inflicting (强加) this terrible noise on them, but they did.
Looking back, I think it was because they knew I was so passionate about it. When I got my hair cut into a punk
style, Mum, Dad and my sisters were remarkably OK about it.
Some other punk kids got given a hard time by their parents, but my family were different. They didn’t just
tolerate my addiction and my strange-looking mates, but they also welcomed the whole package with open arms
and only the occasional collective shake of the head. If they hadn't been so understanding, I would guess my life
would have been very different.

When we discuss our warming planet, we, however, overlook the impact of warming temperatures on our oceans.
A new study published by researchers from the University of Exeter explores the link between warming temperatures
and their impacts on the ocean’s twilight zone (暮光带).
The twilight zone is a region of the ocean that lies between the upper ocean and the deep ocean and is located

other waste matter, produces a shower of organic material. It helps start the ocean’s huge food web as organic matter
and other carbon-based products go down from the surface and move through the depths of the ocean.
This process by which heat-trapping carbon is stored in deep waters instead of going into the atmosphere is an
essential set of processes that control the Earth’s climate system. The ocean’s twilight zone is also home to many
creatures. Twilight zone animals consume matter near the upper ocean during the night and return to the deeper waters
during the day, directly moving carbon from the ocean surface to the deep ocean. In this way, the organisms in the
twilight zone help.
Sadly, the study suggests that up to 40% of twilight zone creatures could disappear by the end of the century. This
is because rising temperatures increase the rate at which organic matter is eaten and disappears. As a result, less carbon
goes down into the twilight zone and beyond for storage as organic matter. Given that organisms in the twilight zone
are highly dependent on going down organic matter, this could put their complex food cycles in danger.
However, the authors tell us that we have not yet reached the point that couldn’t be saved and that there is still
time for us to act. Not only will this increase our ocean’s carbon cycling processes, but it will also protect beings in
the deepest parts of our oceans.

get information, the less people sought it, just like any other product.
“This finding helps explain the ‘checking’ behavior we see with smartphones,” said the study’s lead author. “Each
time we slide down to refresh our news feed or check updates, we are essentially seeking a small piece of new
