Hello listeners. Today we are talking about a woman teacher and principal in China. She was awarded the July 1st Medal in 2021-an award for outstanding members of the CPC. Do you know who she is Yes, her name is Zhang Guimei.
Zhang was born in Heilongjiang. When she was 17, she moved to Yunnan to become a middle school teacher. She worked tirelessly for many years. Life was very hard for her and her family, and Zhang suffered from serious health problems. However, the local community helped her during this difficult time. Later, Zhang decided to do something to help the poor in the community in return.
She wanted to help girls from poor families get a proper education. So, in 2002, Zhang decided to build a free public high school for girls in the mountains. After six years and lots of hard work, she opened Huaping Girls’ High School.
However, it was even harder to make sure the girls were able to come to school every day. Zhang walked to almost every household deep in the mountains and talked to parents about the importance of education for girls. Finally, her hard work paid off. Thanks to Zhang, around 2,000 girls from poor families have taken the college entrance examination and realized their university dreams.
Zhang gave the girls in the mountains the chance to see the world outside. She is truly a role model of our time.
