After graduating college, I finally got up the nerve to quit trying to be what everyone else wanted me to be: priest, professor, or professional. My brain preferred working with my hands to working up essays.
My father had done some woodworking once, so I went back to that old house of ours, and into the shed behind it, and gathered up some of his tools. I didn’t know yet what they did, but one of them I figured out quickly. It was a mallet (木槌), made of a shaped piece of wood for a handle and a rolled-up piece of thick leather for the head. The mallet wasn’t too heavy, but it could make a sharp chisel (凿子) move grandly through a piece of wood. The handle had a light touch of red and brown paint, as if brushed by an artist, which gave the tool a special charm. My new mallet!
I began on my own and with some books to teach myself the craft. I learned that this was the long, slow method. My learning time was done in a basement, away from the curious eyes of the world. The wood I used schooled me about grain, the direction of fibers which affects the way wood splits and carves; the machines I bought educated me about accuracy and danger which affect cutting and shaping. The hand tools of my father’s, and those few I could afford, taught me the value of sharpening. But making joints go together precisely showed me only frustration.
I don’t remember the piece I worked that depressing day, but it finally got the better of me, for not agreeing with my demands for it to be perfect. I took that mallet of my father’s and slammed it into my bench as hard as I e over sometime and I’ll show you the mark in my bench. Now I am a woodworker who has been designing and building furniture for fifty years. I also founded the Northwest Woodworking Studio, where I serve as the director and primary instructor.
24.What was the author’s attitude toward others’ expectations after college
A.He felt encouraged but finally gave in. B.He admired them but lacked the ability.
C.He found them unworthy of his effort. D.He considered them ill-suited to his nature.
25.Why did the author think the mallet attractive
A.Its shape added to its practical value. B.Its leather head made it easier to use.
C.Its weight was perfectly balanced. D.Its handle looked like a work of art.
26.What does “grain” most probably mean in paragraph 3
A.The natural lines in wood. B.The smooth surface of wood.
C.The growth rings in wood. D.The different types of wood.
27.Which saying best reflects the last paragraph
A.Many hands make light work. B.One tree doesn’t make a forest.
C.The path to glory is always rough. D.A good beginning makes a good ending.
C
Picture yourself halfway up a winding trail, lungs burning, legs trembling, the summit still out of sight. You want to stop but you don’t. Something quiet and steady inside keeps you moving. That inner force, psychologists call grit (毅力) — the combination of persistence (坚持) and passion that keeps us going after goals.
A new study from researchers at the China University of Geosciences explored what really develops that quality in young adults — routine workouts in the gym or unpredictable adventures in the wild. Over 1,200 university students took part in a 16–18-week course in either traditional physical education or outdoor education. Their grit levels were measured before and after the courses from two aspects: persistence of effort and consistency of interest. The answer, it turns out, lies somewhere between sweat and scenery.
Both groups improved, but the difference was striking. Outdoor education produced bigger gains across every measure of grit, especially persistence. Students who spent a term facing real-world challenges became mentally stronger. That sense of mastery — “I can handle this” — builds the same kind of grit linked to lower anxiety, better dealing with stress, and greater life satisfaction. In contrast, traditional PE improved students’ persistence but actually reduced their interest consistency — their ability to stay engaged with long-term goals. Repetitive routines, limited autonomy, and predictable settings may weaken curiosity over time. Outdoor education, however, thrives on uncertainty.
Newness doesn’t just keep us entertained; it keeps us engaged. From the perspective of Self-Determination Theory, outdoor programs meet the three psychological needs that fuel motivation: autonomy (you choose how to face challenges), competence (you see progress), and relatedness (you rely on teammates). Together, they create a powerful recipe for inner motivation.
This study shows that the environment we learn in shapes not just our bodies but our minds’ ability to persist. In a world of digital distraction (分心) and instant satisfaction, outdoor education reminds us that grit grows through hardship. For anyone seeking for long-term change, the message is simple: step outside.
28.Which one is most beneficial to the development of grit
A.Running on the same school track. B.Swimming in a sports center pool.
C.Climbing mountains in a natural park. D.Playing basketball in an indoor stadium.
29.What does the underlined word “thrives” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Focuses. B.Grows. C.Depends. D.Survives.
30.Why is Self-Determination Theory mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To explain outdoor programs’ motivational effect.
B.To analyze the physical benefits of newness in life.
C.To introduce the popularity of outdoor education.
D.To define the key driving factors of motivation.
31.What is the main idea of the text
A.Grit contributes to the long-term change. B.Outdoor challenges build a tougher mind.
C.Natural scenery improves mental health. D.Routine workouts weaken inner motivation.
D
A groundbreaking discovery concealed beneath kilometers of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet — a vast, ancient landscape larger than Belgium, preserved in deep freeze for potentially 14 million years — is fundamentally reshaping our understanding of Earth’s climatic past and forcing a recalibration of models that predict its fragile future. Utilizing a sophisticated combination of ice-penetrating radar data from aircraft and gravitational anomaly measurements from satellites, an international scientific consortium has meticulously mapped a pre-glacial terrain of dramatic valleys, rugged peaks, and deep basins. This exquisitely preserved “fossil landscape” serves as a unique, frozen archive, offering an unprecedented glimpse into a distant epoch when Antarctica was a verdant, forested continent teeming with life, before the tectonic shift of continents and falling atmospheric carbon dioxide levels plunged it into an icy hibernation.
The significance of this buried world is twofold, operating across both deep time and pressing contemporary urgency. Primarily, it acts as a crucial calibration tool for paleoclimatology. The intricate topography — carved by rivers that flowed under a temperate climate — provides an immutable record against which scientists can test and refine models of how the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, the largest on Earth, first nucleated, grew, and flowed. By analyzing the direction and depth of these ancient drainage systems, researchers can reconstruct ancient atmospheric patterns and precipitation levels, offering hard data on how Antarctica responded to past periods of global warming, which in turn informs the range of its potential responses to current anthropogenic climate change.
Secondly, and with more immediate stakes, this hidden geology directly controls the present-day stability and future vulnerability of the ice sheet above it. The terrain is not a smooth, gradual slope seaward but is characterized by precipitous troughs and stabilizing ridges. Crucially, the data reveals that several of these deep subglacial valleys are aligned directly towards the present-day grounding lines of major glaciers. This configuration is akin to placing the ice sheet on a tilted surface lubricated with potential accelerants. If warming ocean currents intrude along these submerged valleys, they could enable a process called “basal melting” at an accelerated scale, efficiently eating away at the ice from below and potentially unleashing vast, previously constrained inland ice into the ocean. As glaciologist Dr. Elena Petrov notes, “This isn’t just a map of the past; it’s a map of potential future discharge pathways. The geology dictates the plumbing system for ice loss.”
The methodology behind this discovery is a triumph of remote sensing and computational geophysics. Ice-penetrating radar signals, painstakingly collected over decades of aerial surveys, bounce off the bedrock to reveal its contours. These datasets are fused with satellite measurements of minute gravitational variations caused by the density difference between rock and the overlying ice. Interpreting this information requires complex inverse modeling, a computational process akin to performing a geological CT scan on a continent-scale patient. However, the technique has limitations; radar resolution decreases with ice depth and in areas of complex geology, leading to uncertainties in the finest-scale features of the map, a challenge future missions with more advanced sensors hope to address.
This discovery unequivocally shifts the paradigm in ice sheet science. The bedrock is no longer a passive stage but an active player controlling the drama of ice loss. While the full implications for sea-level rise projections will take years to fully integrate into models, the find underscores the profound complexity of Earth’s cryosphere. It highlights that within the immense, silent desert of the Antarctic ice lies a hidden landscape holding powerful, and perhaps alarming, clues about the scale and trajectory of one of climate change’s most consequential effects: the incremental, yet unstoppable, rise of the global oceans that will redefine the world’s coastlines for centuries to come.
32.Why is the buried Antarctic landscape referred to as a “fossil”
A.Because it contains the preserved remains of prehistoric plants and animals.
B.Because it retains the physical form of a much older environment, preserving its history.
C.Because it is made of extremely old rock formations.
D.Because it was discovered using techniques borrowed from paleontology.
33.According to Dr. Elena Petrov, what is the practical significance of mapping the subglacial valleys
A.It helps locate mineral resources for potential future mining.
B.It identifies the most stable areas for building research stations.
C.It reveals the geographic pathways that could channel and accelerate ice loss towards the ocean.
D.It proves that Antarctica was once connected to other continents.
34.The author mentions the “limitations” of the radar technique in paragraph 4 primarily to:
A.Criticize the scientific team for using outdated technology.
B.Highlight the need for future research and more advanced data collection.
C.Suggest that the discovered landscape might not actually exist.
D.Argue that satellite data is superior to airborne radar.
35.What is the author’s primary purpose in writing this article
A.To advocate for increased funding for Antarctic tourism and exploration.
B.To explain the technical process of ice-penetrating radar in simple terms.
C.To report on a significant scientific discovery and elaborate on its profound implications for understanding climate change and sea-level rise.
D.To warn that the East Antarctic Ice Sheet will collapse imminently.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Green roofs have been around for thousands of years, long before modern housing was developed. From the simple grass-covered roofs above caves to the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, they remained an important part of architecture. 36 They bring enormous environmental benefits and offer solutions to some pressing ecological challenges of our time.
In the design of a green roof, there are key factors that count. The first step is to install (安装) a protective layer over the roof to prevent water damage. 37 It’s essential to choose high-quality materials, as once the green roof is completed and the building is in use, replacing the protective layer becomes difficult and expensive.
Next, a drainage (排水) layer, which is often made of pebbles or a special mat, is placed on top. It helps water flow off the roof instead of pooling on it. Then, a growing medium, like soil or other similar materials, is spread over the drainage layer. 38
Now it’s time to choose plants for the roof. Some plants have shallow root systems and don’t need much water. 39 Sedum and chives are good examples of such plants. They are not only water-efficient but tough and long-lasting.
40 It’s important to think about your budget. On average, it costs $25 to $30 per square foot to install a green roof. This doesn’t include the cost of installing or repairing the normal roof underneath. And there is labour cost to cover. If a traditional roof costs $30 per square foot, installing a green roof could easily double that expense.
A.This is where the plants will grow.
B.However, green roofs come at a high cost.
C.Today, green roofs are gaining more attention.
D.These features make them ideal for green roofs.
E.As a result, they led to the popularity of green roofs.
F.Green roof materials can range from grass to solar panels.
G.The layer also stops plant roots growing into the roof structure.

Bill McDonnell, a 92-year-old former soldier, remained energetic and still had a great passion for hunting, a hobby he had kept since his young adulthood.
As the annual deer season kicked off in early autumn, he insisted on going hunting alone in Shenandoah Mountain, despite his wife Joanna’s constant worries — their son, Bill Jr., had an important football game that day and couldn’t accompany him. Joanna, knowing her husband’s stubbornness, finally gave in after much persuasion, forcing him to make a firm promise to return home by 3 pm before the sun set and the temperature dropped sharply.
Early the next morning, Bill woke up promptly at 4 o’clock, grabbed his old but well-maintained muzzleloader, and drove his rusty but reliable Jeep to the foot of the mountain. He parked the car carefully at the end of a narrow, overgrown old logging road and started hiking slowly into the dense woods, wearing his thick hunting boots. At 7:30 am, the soft sun peeked through the dense leaves, casting warm spots on the moss-covered ground, with the temperature hovering around 25 degrees.
Curious and eager to find a big male deer, he took an unfamiliar winding path that led deeper into the mountain. By 11 am, he reached a small clearing covered with wild grass but suddenly realized he had wandered too far from his starting point. When he tried to head back, no clear path could be found in the thick, overgrown forest, where tall trees and bushes blocked his view.
At 2 pm, exhausted and increasingly anxious, he took out his old mobile phone and GPS device, only to find both were dead — he’d completely forgotten to charge them the night before. Panic quietly crept in as he thought of Joanna’s worried face and her repeated warning, but he forced himself to calm down, recalling his military training. He noticed a line of tall oaks he’d passed earlier, their straight trunks standing out in the forest, and hoped they would guide him safely back to his car.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
