Marion Sheppard felt sorry for herself when she began to lose her sight in her 40s. Since childhood, Sheppard had always been a keen dancer. But now she rarely left her Bronx apartment. She was afraid that, unable to see a stranger approaching, she would be knocked down on the streets. In fact, mostly, she worried about the way she would appear to the world. She wondered constantly, “What if people look at me differently, and treat me differently ”
After several months of grief and fear, Sheppard resolved to keep moving. Hard as it was, Sheppard forced herself to go out. She attended a social event for people with visual problems, and was shocked to find that not only did no one dance, but they barely moved. “Oh no!” she told herself. “That is not the way I want to live!” She bought a walking stick and named it Tyreek, which she had always planned on giving a son if she had one. Sheppard continued to work at her library job at The New York Times until her vision worsened in her 50s. And she kept moving and dancing. Sheppard was 61 when she attended a summer camp for the blind in 2008, where she taught her first line dancing class.
After that, she asked a Manhattan community center run by Visions if she could teach her class there, but she was told no and that it would be too dangerous for the students. Still, she persisted, and soon convinced the administrators to let her teach line dancing on a volunteer basis. Her classes proved to be so popular that in 2012, Visions hired her to be on staff.
She was teaching over a dozen students dance steps. But Sheppard instructed her beloved students on far more than that. With constant encouragement, she also managed to make dignity and independence take root in them. In her classes, the students could truly be themselves.
24. Why was Sheppard unwilling to leave her apartment
A. She had a lot of housework to do.
B. She had to attend her son at home.
C. She was afraid of being looked down upon.
D. She was worried about getting involved in accidents.

D. She valued it as something special.
26. Why did the community center refuse Sheppard’s request at first
A. They didn’t have enough space for dance classes.
B. They were concerned about the students’ safety.
C. They didn’t believe Sheppard could teach well.
D. They thought dancing wasn’t suitable for blind people.
27. What did Sheppard’s students learn from her
A. Humor and patience.
B. Intelligence and honesty.
C. Imagination and creativity.
D. Self-respect and self-reliance.

It’s not just humans who get wiser as they age-animals do too, according to a growing body of research. Age is not just a number: as animals get older, they behave differently depending on their life experiences, gain richer knowledge of their environment, and often pass it on to younger members of their group, researchers say.
Previous research on aging focused on negative health aspects, says researcher Keller Kopf, an ecologist at Charles Darwin University in Australia. “That idea about old individuals not being important for populations, or for environments, is really not the full story,”he says. The more he examined different groups of animals, the more he found remarkable examples showing the value of older creatures.
Primates (灵长目动物), whales, elephants and pack-hunting animals all have old individuals who carry vital cultural knowledge and maintain social structures, according to Kopf’s research. Older female elephants, for example, have a “social memory” of who is a friend or enemy, and are more aware of potential dangers such as listening out for lions.
Kopf’s paper talks about the importance of “cultural transmission” that not only recognises that animals have culture, but that these individuals deliver their social learning to other individuals. Older individuals tend to have gathered the most knowledge.
On a more personal level, the discovery of the importance of older animals made Kopf think more about our own species. “It has made me think a lot more about how we don’t value older people in our society. Many people of advanced ages are forgotten about,” he says. This is a loss not only for the old people themselves, but for all of human society, he says. “What is that doing for the modern world ”
28. What can we know about animals getting older
A. They leave little experience.
B. They pass food to the young.
C. They always behave the same.
D. They become more intelligent.
29. Why is previous research mentioned in Paragraph 2
A. To introduce the negative health aspects.
B. To stress the uniqueness of Kopf’s study.
C. To identify potential dangers of being old.
D. To recognise the value of the past research.
30. What does the underlined phrase “cultural transmission” probably mean
A. Spreading knowledge and experience.
B. Maintaining social structures effectively
C. Exchanging individual cultural knowledge.
D. Discovering life experiences independently.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Animals Deserve Kindness.
B. Age Defines Everything.
C. Youth Holds the Key.
D. Wisdom Comes with Age.

A subway line that links downtown Beijing with Daxing International Airport in the Chinese capital now allows passengers to enter and exit stations by just scanning the palm of a hand, setting an example of how using biometric data in public transportation can make commuting more convenient.
The pilot program was launched on Sunday on the Daxing Airport Express subway line to spare passengers the trouble of swiping a card (刷卡) or scanning a QR code to catch a train , the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport said.
Any commuter aged 14 and above can first register the print of either palm through a simple, automated process and provide relevant information to authorize the payment gateway of WeChat, a popular messaging app in China. Once the palm print is registered, a commuter can scan the palm at any automated ticket gate to pass through. The fare is automatically paid after exit. Besides, the registration is a one-time process and doesn’t require renewal.
“Passengers can just place a palm above the scanning machine when entering or exiting a subway station. The ticket gate will open if the palm scan matches the palm print registered voluntarily,” said Zhang Li, an expert at the Beijing Metro Network Control Center.
The biometric method combines the use of palm print and vein mapping, which are different for every individual. Therefore, data masking and encryption (加密) technologies have been applied to protect user information.
Xin Jianhua, general manager of the public service center at WeChat Pay, said palm scans can be gradually used in offices, schools, gyms and restaurants, as it requires no contact and is therefore safer and more efficient. “Currently, it is very useful for the elderly and those who have physical limitations,” he said. “Use of biometric data allows passengers to take subway trains if they do not have cash or when they forget their subway cards,” he added.
32. What do we know about palm scanning
A. Anyone aged 14 and above has to register the print.
B. There is an automatic payment after exit.
C. Passengers should have both palms registered.
D. The registration needs updating every year.
33. What does the underlined word “masking” probably mean
A. Removing. B. Decoding. C. Uploading. D. Hiding
34. Which statement may Xin Jianhua disagree with
A. Palm scanning is of limited use to the disabled.
B. The new technology is more time-saving.
C. The future of palm scans is promising
D. Palm scanning spares passengers the trouble of taking cards.
35. What’s the main idea of this article
A. The ways of riding the subway in Beijing.
B. Beijing’s introduction of palm-print access on a subway line
C. People’s attitudes towards palm scanning in the subway.
D. The advantages of scanning palms to enter and exit subway stations.

How to Have Better, Deeper Conversations
In today’s fast-paced world, distractions are everywhere, especially from our phones. When catching up with friends, it can be frustrating when their attention shifts away. __36__. It’s a skill that can be cultivated. Here are three key ways to enhance your listening ability.
Avoid distractions.
To be an effective listener, start by putting away your phone and other distractions. Research shows that multitasking distracts our attention and hampers the quality of our conversations. As musician Hishikesh Hirway says, “Trying to listen to one song while singing another in your head is impossible.” __37__.
Reflect on what you hear.
Active listening is more than just being silent. __38__ Phrases like “What I hear you saying is” can confirm your understanding. Also, resist the urge to share your own stories immediately; keep the conversation centered on them.
__39__.
Nonverbal communication plays a vital role in conversations. Maintaining eye contact, having an open posture, and nodding can show that you’re engaged. These small gestures help the other person feel valued and encourage them to continue sharing.
Improving your listening skills takes practice. __40__ As Hirway advises, “Let the other person know you’re listening and stay focused.”
A. Use nonverbal cues.
B. Look up to show interest.
C. So to build stronger relationships, active listening is essential.
D. But with a bit more effort, you can foster deeper conversations.
E. Engage by asking questions or summarizing what the other person says
F. Therefore, during conversations, focus fully on the person in front of you.
G. Taking notes while listening can help you remember the conversation better.

My 10-year-old daughter and I were driving from Los Angeles to Dallas. We were running low on gas somewhere in New Mexico and figured we’d see a gas station soon enough to fill up.
But that didn’t happen and we realized we were not going to make it to the next town. So my daughter made up a sign that read “Low on gas. Can u help ” and held it outside her window in the hope that a driver in the next lane would notice it and stop.
There weren’t too many vehicles passing us at the time. It was a desolate (荒凉的) stretch of road and about 3:30 pm on a weekday. A suburban person was driving along happily in the neighboring lane ahead of us. We caught up with it in the hope that the driver would notice the sign.
An elderly gentleman was driving it and after a brief expression of confusion on his face, he seemed to have noticed the sign and slowed down to pull over. We pulled over right behind him.
He was friendly and was eager to help us. At first he thought we didn’t have enough money to buy gas, so he offered to buy us gas at the next town Roswell that was about 10 miles away! Awfully sweet of a stranger to offer that.
When we explained our difficulty of not having enough gas to get to Roswell, he said he was a ranch (牧场) hand that was returning home from work. His ranch was about 20 minutes’ drive away and they had a gas pump on there, so if we could give him 40 minutes, he would head back there, get a can of gasoline and fill up our tank for us.

第一节 演讲稿(参考范文)
Dear fellow students,
Good morning! I am honored to have the opportunity to give a speech on craftsmanship.
The spirit of craftsmanship stands for devotion, patience and persistent pursuit of perfection. Many craftsmen devote their whole life to polishing their works. For example, ancient craftsmen spent decades making delicate porcelain, pursuing every tiny detail.
As senior two students, we should carry forward this fine spirit. In daily study, we ought to focus on our tasks, overcome impatience and try our best to improve ourselves constantly.
Thank you!
Yours,
Li Jin
第二节 读后续写参考范文
It was a long wait.
We waited anxiously by the roadside, constantly glancing toward the distant farm road. As dusk fell, the elderly man finally appeared with a big can of gasoline. Without delay, he helped us fill our car tank fully. We tried to pay him for the fuel, but he refused firmly, saying helping strangers was just what he always did.
Filled with gratitude, we decided to do something.
Before leaving, we found a local grocery and bought plenty of daily necessities. We left all the gifts at his ranch gate with a warm thank-you note. From this unforgettable experience, I learned true kindness never asks for reward, and I’m determined to pass on this warm help to people in need in the future.
