In 2009, American composer Eric Whitacre got a wonderful idea. One day at home, he watched a fan’s video that surprised him deeply. A girl named Britlin was singing his composition *Sleep* alone in her bedroom with a simple web camera. It struck Whitacre that music could bridge the gap between people from different cultures.
Thus the Virtual Choir (虚拟合唱团) was started. Whitacre posted a call online, asking people worldwide to record themselves singing the piece *Lux Aurumque* and send it to him. He had expected about 50 videos, but received 185 from 12 countries. His team spent much time editing the videos, and the final video was uploaded in 2010. It showed many singers on screen performing together from thousands of miles apart and soon went viral.
The project grew rapidly. Later, over 2,000 singers from 58 countries submitted videos. A farmer in Nebraska sang alongside a student in Tokyo. Even though they had never met, they created beautiful and touching music together.
Yet there were many challenges. Submissions were in different formats and sound quality varied greatly. Some failed to keep the beat, others had background noise. The team spent months producing and matching the videos patiently. Besides technical problems, singing alone in front of a camera also felt unnatural for many singers. “You have to imagine everyone else,” explained James Green. “You can’t hear them. You have to believe they’re there. It’s an act of faith.”
In 2020, Whitacre organized and led the Virtual Choir’s biggest event, featuring over 17,000 singers from 129 countries. Its theme was “May we sing together, though we are apart.”
Whitacre believes the project shows a basic human need. We all want to be part of something bigger and meaningful. The Virtual Choir uses modern technology to carry on the tradition of singing together and connects people worldwide through the power of music.

Nothing says “proud homeowner” like a clean, green lawn. A clean lawn shows your care and earns your neighbors’ admiration. Every autumn, millions of homeowners reach for their garden tools. They gather fallen leaves, bag them, and send them away. However, this tidy appearance comes at a cost. A growing movement of environmentalists suggests we simply leave the leaves instead of sending them to landfills.
If leaves are buried in landfills, they break down without oxygen and give off harmful greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming. In fact, yard waste makes up about 13% of what we throw away. Some people burn leaf piles instead. But this releases harmful chemicals into the air and creates fire risks, especially in dry conditions.
So what happens when we leave the leaves The benefits are significant. Leaf litter shelters insects, spiders and other small creatures, offering critical winter habitats for many species as noted by the Xerces Society. The National Wildlife Federation’s “Leave the Leaves” program adds that butterflies, bees and other insects rely on fallen leaves for protection.
Leaves are also natural plant food. As they break down, they release nutrients into the soil. This helps grass stay green and healthy without chemical products. Many universities recommend cutting leaves into small pieces with a lawn mower (割草机) and leaving them on the grass rather than removing them.
This autumn, consider seeing your leaves differently. They are not trash to remove but a resource to keep. Move them into garden beds. Run over them with a mower to break them into small pieces. Let them accumulate in quiet corners of your yard. These simple actions reduce pollution, support wildlife, and nourish (滋养) your soil. Sometimes the best thing we can do for the planet is also the easiest: just leave the leaves.

When disaster strikes, such as an earthquake, building collapse or fire, every second counts. But entering dangerous places means risking lives. Scientists are developing humanoid (类人的) robots for rescue.
In Europe, the WALK-MAN project creates a robot that can walk over debris, twisted metal, and fallen walls left after earthquakes or building collapses. It can also open doors and use tools. What makes WALK-MAN special is its advanced perception system, which allows it to see, feel, and keep balance where humans would struggle. In Singapore, HTX is pushing humanoid robotics further. By mid-2027, these robots will work alongside emergency responders. Standing 1.7 metres tall, they are built for firefighting, handling dangerous materials, and search-and-rescue. Controlled remotely at first, they are expected to operate on their own by 2029. In China, researchers are making rapid progress in humanoid robotics for disaster response. These robots are designed to work in teams, with some carrying sensors to detect trapped victims while others clear paths through rubble (瓦砾).
What makes these robots truly useful is their ability to use human tools. Unlike wheeled robots that get stuck on stairs, humanoid robots can climb, open doors, and operate equipment made for people. They carry sensors that detect body heat, listen for voices, and map unfamiliar spaces in real time.
Yet the challenges remain significant. Power supply is a major limitation. Most humanoid robots can only operate for one to two hours before needing to recharge, which is far from enough in large-scale munication networks often fail in disaster zones, cutting off the connection between robots and their human operators. When that happens, robots must rely on their own artificial intelligence to make decisions, but programming a machine to keep its balance on shifting rubble while searching for victims is enormously complex.
Despite these difficulties, researchers worldwide are making steady progress, driven by a single goal: to reach the unreachable and save lives where humans cannot go.

Good afternoon, I’m Ella. My blog is about clothes for students. I didn’t get many hits at first, but one newspaper wrote something about me and more people started to look at the blog. Then a local TV channel interviewed me for a program. Since then, the blog has developed even faster. So I’m no longer working alone. A photographer agreed to take some shots for the site to better show the clothes. My brother Eden offered to be my model. I also considered hiring a makeup artist. Luckily, Bonnie, my talented friend, helped me. I make sure I include all kinds of clothes to suit a range of tastes for my readers. I try to think about their budgets, too. Most of the clothes I talk about are readily available. As well as showing the latest styles, I also feature classic clothes I’ve found in second-hand shops. Believe it or not, those from the 1920s are the richest sources of ideas for my recent blog posts. Although people enjoyed the clothes from the 1970s most, I also got positive comments about stuff from the 1980s.
