Growing up in rural (农村的) communities, I always had a love of the countryside, animals and nature. The books I read as a child often had animals at their heart — The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark, Charlotte’s Web.
Farming, however, was something I experienced later in life, in my teenage years. It’s something I instantly connected with, and I feel fortunate that my children have been able to grow up helping out on the farm and spending lots of time with our livestock and pets.
It’s so important to get a connection with farming at an early stage. We all eat food, so being familiar with where it comes from and what goes into producing it is a natural thing. If a spark of interest can be ignited early, it can only be a good thing going forward. It’s a joy to see the children’s faces light up on school visits when they see the photos of animals on our family farm and watch the video of an egg hatching (孵化). Animals have a unique magic all of their own.
Being around animals also teaches children what they can take with them into adulthood. It builds foundations of responsibility, kindness, as well as perseverance and problem solving. We work together as a family a lot on the farm, which builds a strong work ethic and a sense of teamwork — both fantastic life skills.
I’m a firm believer that you don’t know what you’re going to love until you try it. My hope is that if children from non-rural backgrounds get a taste of what it’s like on a farm, then they might discover something they love.

It’s easy to keep your aging brain as quick as it was in college. Use a website full of brain games or download the right apps, and within 20 minutes you’ll be doing your part to sharpen your memory and slow the decline of your mental functions. At least that’s what the companies behind this booming industry would have you believe. But is it true
Concrete proof about the benefits of brain games is hard to come by, experts say, when it comes to measurably improving aspects of mental fitness, like having a good memory. “People would really love to believe they could do something like this and make their brain better, but there’s just no solid evidence,” says Randall W. Engle, a primary investigator at the Attention & Working Memory Lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
That’s not to say brain games are without benefits. Experts say these kinds of mental exercises can change your brain. The brain changes with just about everything you do, including mental training exercises. But numerous studies have shown that brain games lack what researchers call “transfer”. In other words, repeating a game over and over again teaches you how to play the game and get better at it but your brain aging won’t necessarily come to a stop.
“It’s like, you walk through fresh snow, and you leave a trace. If you walk the same route again, the trace gets deeper and deeper,” says Ursula Staudinger, director of the Butler Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University. With its red color, Mars has long been called the red planet. Now, scientists may have discovered the potential source of that red color, overturning a popular theory in the process.
Previous analyses of the substances on Mars, based only on observations by spacecraft, didn’t discover any evidence of water, which led researchers to believe that the iron oxide must be hematite (赤铁矿) which typically forms in a dry environment over billions of years. However, a team led by Valantinas from Brown University analyzed data from Mars missions and suggested ferrihydrite (水铁矿) which forms quickly in cool water may be responsible for the redness rather than hematite.
The new study has combined lab methods with observational data for the first time to offer evidence. The scientists recreated Martian dust in a laboratory. The team analyzed the dust using techniques similar to those employed by orbiters. Then, the scientists compared the lab data with spacecraft data. It is suggested that even the dustiest parts of Mars hold evidence of water-rich substances, and the presence of ferrihydrite is the best match for dust on Mars, rather than hematite, when compared with the lab samples.
The study wasn’t focused on determining when exactly the substance formed. However, since ferrihydrite forms in cool water, it’s possible that it was created about 3 billion years ago, as opposed to when the planet was warmer and wetter millions of years before. “This was a time of volcanic activity on Mars that likely caused ice-melting events, providing conditions favorable for ferrihydrite formation,” Valantinas said. “The timing matches with a period when Mars was changing from its earlier, wetter state to its current desert environment.”
Now researchers are waiting for the samples on Mars to be brought back to earth. “Once we get these samples into the lab, we’ll be able to measure how much ferrihydrite the dust contains, and what this means for our understanding of the history of water,” said Valantinas.
