It was a sunny Sunday at the beginning of March, in my back garden in the UK, and my children and I were making three mini ponds (池塘). We put three cheap plastic plant pots on the ground. Then we filled them with water, rocks and pond plants.
We were hopeful wildlife would come but, at the same time, apprenensive that — during a time of biodiversity crisis (危机) — nothing would find its way to our small ponds. Then, just one week later, we noticed spiders and some insects had begun to visit.
“Ponds are absolute biodiversity hotspots in terms of both the range and density (密度) of species that use them. After you fill a hole in the garden with water, wildlife will come very, very quickly,” says Adrian Thomas, an expert on gardening for wildlife and the author of the book Gardening for Wildlife. Ponds, he says, offer a mix of habitat types. “Within a pond, you have cool parts, open water, shallow parts, the parts around the outside.” The result, he says, is a “diversity of life that is so much greater than in any other part of the garden” What’s more, these small water bodies support more biodiversity than larger water bodies, even rivers and lakes. In Europe alone, ponds have been found to support up to 70% of regional freshwater species and they can also provide important services for birds, bats and other mammals.
Back in our garden, we were visiting our mini ponds daily, excited to see what might have made its home there. We practiced patience — as Thomas advised — which was difficult as at first the ponds grew thick with algae (海藻) But then, in just a few days, the waters cleared again. In week two, we were somewhat surprised to find some small animals swimming in the water.
On the Sunday afternoon of week three, I saw my children running towards me in excitement. They had found a fully grown common frog, which they named “Froggo”. Recently, led by Motoyasu Tanaka at the University of Electro-Communications, a team of researchers in Tokyo has created a technological wonder — the snake-shaped robot. This unique invention could change the way we carry out search-and-rescue operations and beyond.
The 1.7-meter-long robotic “snake” has been engineered with one goal: crossing the most challenging landscapes. From climbing steps to moving through narrow spaces, the robot can get into places that are typically inaccessible to humans or traditional robots. The “snake” isn’t just any robot. Tanaka’s creation is a mix of mobility and intelligence. The “snake” has 17 joints (关节), each equipped with advanced distance sensors (传感器). These sensors enable the robot to figure out whether its wheels are positioned on the ground or hanging in the air. The design was inspired by the biological movements of real snakes.
One of the most fascinating things about the robot is how versatile it is. In addition to disaster recovery, where it could help locate survivors, the robot has another unusual but practical application: giving leg massages (按摩).
