Hope Johnson is in Columbus, Ohio, overseeing nine adults while they play in the water during a summer outing. Part of her job as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) is to assist people with disabilities with everything from daily tasks to their jobs.
She and the group, whose members she sees as family, meet each week to participate in activities through the Without Walls (WOW) program. Since the start of the program in late 2020, she and the program have helped more than 120 adults in the central Ohio area, establishing a sense of connection between participants and their community.
Nicole Neri, who is in her 20s, says she feels like she’s a part of something when she attends WOW. For the past two years, she has been helping a participant, Mark, who is legally blind. “I help Mark every day,” she says. “She makes sure he’s safe,” Ms. Johnson says.
People are much happier when they have choices and aren’t separated, says Sean Luechtefeld, a vice president with the American Network of Community Options and Resources. He says Ms. Johnson goes above and beyond. “This type of work is incredibly rewarding,” adds Mr. Luechtefeld. “But it can also be incredibly challenging.” Fewer people are becoming DSPs, he says, adding that a decades-old shortage is fueled in part by people feeling undervalued and underpaid.
Lisa Wenzke, a Columbus mother, first met Ms. Johnson earlier this year at a Special Olympics track meet (田径运动会), where the WOW leader was cheering for her participants. Ms. Wenzke was impressed by that commitment. “All I could think was, ‘This is someone I want in my life. This is a wonderful person,’ ” she says. They know her family and, to her, they’re a part of it.

“I don’t think our brains are made to handle so much noise,” says Olga Lehmann, who studies silence. Overexposure to loud noise — particularly sounds above 85 decibels (分贝), roughly the level of a loud restaurant — can lead to hearing loss, high blood pressure, stress, and trouble sleeping.
Some people get away from the noise by traveling for silence, but quiet time at home is just as crucial. “Short periods of silence in daily life can help us manage stress,” says Lehmann, adding that her goal is not to remove all the noise from life.
Some quiet-seekers try bigger changes, like multi-day silent meditations (冥想) or spending days in darkness. Lehmann says those tough choices work for some people, “but I like to start small.” This could mean just sitting in a park with no phone for 10 minutes. Quiet time doesn’t always mean being alone. “We are living through a time of disconnection and loneliness,” Lehmann says. “That’s what I call the dark side of silence.”
Fortunately, many quiet-seekers pair silence with community. Silent Book Club, where people meet to read quietly for an hour, has become very popular recently. “We call it the introvert (内向的人) happy hour,” says Guinevere de la Mare, co-founder of the group, which has over 1,000 chapters (地方分会) across 50 countries. “Silent book clubs took off (迅速流行) as a low-pressure way to interact with people,” he adds. Despite the name, Silent Book Club events aren’t completely quiet. Their meeting spaces, often local cafés, have their own noise.
Unfortunately, action at the government level takes time, while research on noise exposure remains insufficient. But cities are showing slight signs of progress. In 2024, the New York City Council set up noise cameras to track vehicles that break the city’s 85-decibel limit. “The moment you start monitoring and becoming aware, you take action,” Lehmann says. “I see these kinds of policies and new laws as a good sign.”

A few weeks ago, I heard that Dave, an old school friend of mine, broke his legs. It happened because he lost his grip while free climbing. I kept asking myself why he would risk his life on such a steep rock face. I can’t help thinking he was just ostentatious. He mistakenly believed that at 40, his body was still as strong as ever.
So what makes extreme sports and living a risky life so attractive Well, it seems we can blame it all on dopamine, the chemical which helps control the brain’s reward and pleasure centers. Dopamine is what makes us feel satisfied after eating a meal. It’s also responsible for the high we feel when we do something brave, like swimming with sharks. It turns out that there are fewer dopamine-inhibiting receptors in a risk-taker’s brain. In other words, people like Dave have more of this chemical in their brains. That means they will keep taking risks and trying to get that same great feeling again. Researchers are now working on a treatment, yet I don’t think those adventure lovers actually suffer from this condition.
Another friend of mine, Jake, gave up a promising acting career and was drawn into stunt work. As he said, there would never be boring moments in that job. He was also attracted by the close friendships people in the stunt business are famous for. Maybe that’s why he keeps taking stunt jobs, despite his wife’s protestations.
Today, there are countless online videos of strangers putting themselves in danger on purpose. If you want to see someone jump into freezing water, you can find it online. As entertainment, it doesn’t say much about human progress. But as life gets easier in a society where most of our basic needs are already met, we have to wonder what new excitement we’ll seek out next, and what we’re prepared to give up to get it.
