It all started when she was young. Dr. Mahalaxmi Iyer always knew she wanted to be a doctor. And once she became a doctor, she felt her work should be the kind that would leave a mark. Though her career as a doctor certainly helped others, within 10 months, she lost both her parents when she was in her mid-30s, which brought a sinking feeling — she had not been able to do enough for them.
The idea that looking after other seniors would help ease the sorrow of her own losses gave Iyer a renewed focus. She sold her home, and invested all her life’s savings to start Balaji Healthcare, a multi-speciality hospital and elder care home. The 100-bed facility that opened its doors in 2011 with four patients has grown to accommodate 74 residents. Many of them have illnesses which require full-time, expert care that families are unable to provide. A world built around self-checkouts, GPS, delivery apps, and screens might be quietly shrinking the amount of real conversation we have each day. A new study suggests that daily spoken word counts have been falling for years.
Matthias Mehl, a psychology professor at the University of Arizona who studies everyday communication, didn’t even set out to find this trend. It showed up when Mehl and his colleagues tried to replicate (复制) his famous 2007 science paper on how much men and women talk. The researchers pulled word counts from 22 different studies conducted between 2005 and 2019 for entirely different purposes, involving around 2,200 people.
“My collaborator, Valeria Pfeifer, came to me with the word counts from the replication analyses,” Mehl said. “I told her there had to be a mistake. But she rechecked everything, and the number held.”
One reason why this study is hard to dismiss is the way the data were collected. It’s not like the researchers were cherry-picking “quiet people” samples. “Participants had no idea their word counts would ever be analyzed this way, which rules out any concern that people adjusted their behavior to fit an assumption,” Mehl said.
“When we plotted the daily spoken word counts against the year each study was collected, we found a consistent decline,” Mehl explained. “Every year, the estimate of daily spoken words dropped by 338.”
It’s possible that total word output hasn’t declined at all — it may even have risen — if you count everything people type. But Mehl argues that spoken conversation isn’t just word count — it carries tone, timing, awkward pauses, laughter, and warmth — the stuff that gives social life its texture (质感). “These 338 words are not one long conversation we stopped having. They are spread across small moments throughout the day — asking a cashier for help, getting directions from a stranger, and chatting with a neighbor. Those moments add up, and their absence does, too,” Mehl said.
In other words, this research isn’t just about talk. It’s about what talk represents: small social contact, low-stakes warmth, and the quiet glue that holds everyday community together.

I have a lot of great friends, but I don’t belong to many other social groups. I guess my thought is that spreading myself thin that way might be bad for my well-being. New research suggests otherwise. A study in Britain from The Society for Personality and Social Psychology has found that people who belong to more groups may be happier and healthier than those who don’t.
In this study, Clifford Stevenson of Nottingham Trent University in England and his colleagues got data from almost 6,000 people participating in an ongoing study called the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), which looks at how different aspects of a person’s life experience affect their well-being over time.
Participants self-reported on many things, including their health and well-being, how generally lonely they were, and how many different types of groups they belonged to. These could include community sports teams, neighborhood associations, parent-teacher associations, charities, or book clubs and so on.
After analyzing the results, Stevenson and his team found that people who belonged to more diverse groups at one point in time felt less lonely and had greater well-being four years later. This was true even after taking into account factors like age and gender, as well as how lonely or troubled they were at the beginning of the study. This suggests that joining more varied groups can help people feel better above and beyond how many groups they belong to.
This study adds to a growing scientific literature tying group membership to well-being, but also has practical implications. People in many communities around the world are suffering from higher levels of loneliness, and health care workers and others are looking for solutions.
With that in mind, there is reason to consider applying this finding more broadly. If we know that greater group diversity is useful at both a community and personal level, we can perhaps use that information to help improve conditions for people no matter where they live.
