A
Billions of years ago, there were no plants on Earth. The early planet had little oxygen, and only simple tiny living things lived in the ocean. Among them, green algae played the most important role. They could make food through photosynthesis and slowly filled the air with oxygen. This great change made it possible for more complex life to appear.
Scientists have found that the first real plants on Earth evolved from green algae about 470 million years ago. At first, these primitive plants lived in shallow water near the coasts. Sometimes they were covered by water, and sometimes they were exposed to the air. This special environment helped them gradually get used to living on land.
The earliest land plants were quite simple. They were small and had no real roots, stems or leaves. One famous ancient plant fossil is Cooksonia, which lived around 430 million years ago. It was only about 5 centimeters tall. As time went by, plants kept evolving. They grew stronger, developed vascular tissues to carry water and nutrients, and later ferns, gymnosperms and flowering plants appeared one after another.
The evolution of plants completely changed our planet. They made the land full of life, created rich soil and provided food and oxygen for almost all animals. Without the long evolution of the first plants, the beautiful world we live in would never exist.
