A
Last weekend, our class took part in a meaningful community volunteer activity. We went to the nearby neighborhood to clean up messy posters and small advertisements, which are also called "street spam". These random ads were pasted everywhere — on building walls, street lamps, door frames and even public noticeboards. They not only made the community look dirty and untidy, but also affected the beauty of the whole neighborhood.
Thirty-five students divided themselves into seven groups before starting the work. Each group was responsible for one area. We prepared wet cloths, scrapers and rubbish bags in advance. Some of us carefully scraped off the old sticky ads, while others wiped the walls clean. The work was not easy. Many advertisements had been stuck for a long time and were hard to remove. Our hands got tired and some even became dirty, but no one complained. We kept working from nine o’clock in the morning until half past eleven.
After two and a half hours’ hard work, we cleaned up more than 800 pieces of small advertisements in total. The community became neat and fresh again. Many local residents smiled and praised us warmly. A community worker told us that such messy ads always cost the workers plenty of time to deal with every month.
This activity taught us a lot. We realized that small bad habits can bring big trouble to public places. We also hope everyone will refuse to post random ads and take action to keep public environments clean. Small efforts can make a great difference to our living places.

In December 1952, London suffered from a terrible smog disaster, which is now known as the Great Smog of London. For five days, thick, dark smog covered the whole city and brought huge trouble to people’s lives. Many people wonder what led to this serious disaster.
Two main reasons worked together to create the heavy smog. First, cold weather swept across London at that time. To keep warm, nearly all families burned coal for heating. Meanwhile, countless factories in the city also used coal as fuel. Large amounts of smoke and harmful gases poured into the air every day. Second, a special weather condition called temperature inversion appeared. It meant cold air stayed close to the ground while warm air was above it. With little wind, the dirty smoke and gases could not rise or spread away. They were trapped near the streets and buildings, mixing with natural fog and turning into thick smog.
The smog was so thick that people could hardly see things a few meters away. Traffic nearly stopped, and many people got sick because of the polluted air. This terrible event woke up the whole country. Later, the British government made strict laws to cut down air pollution. From then on, London began to take steps to improve its air quality. Today, London no longer has such terrible smog.
1.What is the main idea of the passage

B. Different kinds of weather in old London
C. How people kept warm in cold winter
D. Modern air pollution problems in London

3.The underlined word “trapped” in Paragraph 2 means ______.
A. moved quickly B. kept in one place C. cleaned out D. blown away
4.What can we infer from the passage
A. The great smog lasted for more than ten days

C. The disaster pushed Britain to protect air environment
D. People could still drive cars freely in the smog
C
Nowadays, more and more cars run on roads around the world. While cars bring great convenience to our daily life, they also cause serious environmental problems. One of the most serious issues is carbon emissions from motor vehicles.
Most cars use gasoline or diesel as fuel. When they are running, large amounts of carbon dioxide will be released into the air. Too much carbon dioxide is a major cause of air pollution and global warming. Dirty air makes people easily get coughs and breathing illnesses, especially the elderly and kids. Besides, heavy traffic often leads to traffic jams. Cars have to wait for a long time with engines on, which produces even more harmful gases.
To solve this problem, many countries have taken useful actions. First, new energy cars that use electricity are widely encouraged. They produce almost no carbon emissions. Second, cities call on people to choose public transportation, ride bikes or walk for short trips. Many places have also built more bike lanes and bus stops.
Small changes from everyone can make a big difference. If we all try to drive less and choose green ways to travel, the air will become fresher and our living environment will become much better.
1.What is the main idea of the passage
A. Different kinds of fuel used by modern cars
B. The pollution from vehicle carbon emissions and solutions
C. The advantages of taking public transportation
D. Common illnesses caused by bad weather
2.What gas do running cars mainly send out to pollute the air
A. Oxygen B. Carbon dioxide C. Steam D. Nitrogen
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. Cars never produce harmful gases in traffic jams.
B. New energy electric cars give off lots of carbon dioxide.
C. Too much carbon dioxide leads to air pollution and global warming.
D. The elderly are not influenced by dirty air at all.
4.What can we infer from the passage
A. People will stop using cars completely in the future.
B. Taking buses or riding bikes is a green way to travel.
C. All cities have enough bike lanes now.
D. Carbon emissions only come from motor vehicles.
D
Every day, people produce lots of waste in daily life, such as used paper, empty bottles, old boxes and broken plastic goods. Most of these wastes are not truly useless. Through proper recycling and reuse, they can turn into valuable resources again. Waste recycling has become one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect our environment.
Recycling brings many great benefits to our planet. Firstly, it saves natural resources. Making new products from recycled waste uses far less raw materials than creating them from brand-new natural resources. For example, recycled paper can protect thousands of trees every year, and reused plastic reduces the need for oil resources. Secondly, recycling cuts down energy use and reduces pollution. Factories will produce less carbon emissions and waste water when processing recycled materials, which helps slow down global warming and keep our land and water clean.
However, many people still throw different kinds of waste together carelessly, which makes recycling difficult. Good recycling habits are simple but important. We can sort waste at home, collect reusable items and avoid throwing away things that can be recycled. Small daily actions matter a lot. Waste is never useless garbage if we make good use of it. With everyone’s effort, recycling will make our earth greener and more beautiful.
1. What can recycled paper help protect every year
2. What makes waste recycling difficult according to the passage
3. What good habits can we develop to help waste recycling
