Clementine Lee’s farm animals aren’t staying put—they’re hitting the road, bringing smiles to children all over Whidbey Island. Earlier this year, Lee launched Happy Hooves and Quacky Feet, a mobile petting zoo that features a delightful collection of ducks, sheep, and goats, all ready to make appearances at events.
Among the playful list of characters are a goose named Dog and a dog named Goose, adding an extra touch of fun to the experience. With hopes that the animals will soon give birth by spring, the zoo is aimed at ensuring the animals are friendly and approachable for children.
Having previously worked as a preschool teacher and face-painter, Lee saw a natural progression in creating a mobile petting zoo. She’s already brought her animals to birthday parties and events like the recent Greenbank Farm Harvest Faire. “My life keeps taking me in new and exciting directions,” she said with enthusiasm.
Caring for the animals is a family effort, with help from her 9-year-old son, Leonidas Mitchell. Ducks were the first animals they acquired while living in northern California, but the family tragically lost their home and animals in one of Santa Rosa’s destructive fires.
Lee’s love for animals grew after a moving experience at an outdoor farm school which her son attended. There, she met a loving sheep named Celeste, who offered her comfort after the loss of her home. “After everything, this sheep just came up and gave me all the love and hugs,” Lee recalled.
To her surprise, Celeste and her two lambs, Clover and Crimson, would one day become part of Lee’s own flock. In 2021, after moving to North Whidbey, Lee’s former teacher offered her the sheep. Lee happily drove 16 hours from California to bring them to Oak Harbor. Reflecting on the experience, she added, “I never knew I’d love a sheep or a goose. I used to think sheep were afraid of everything, but they can be so loving.”

Thunderstorm safety often comes down to some common sense. Do not go outside or stand under a tree during a thunderstorm. Seek shelter instead of crouching down in a field if there are nearby strikes. And follow the life-saving 30/30 rule: Wait 30 minutes after hearing the last rumble of thunder before going outside. But storms are incredibly dynamic forces of nature, and sometimes it is possible to hear loud crashes of thunder or see lightning flash when it is completely sunny outside. Though unusual, these seemingly fierce strikes and their accompanying thunder can spoil summer fun at best and be dangerous at worst.
“Lightning is known to travel up to 30 miles away from a storm,” astronomer Cyrena Arnold tells Popular Science. “When this happens a lot of lightning comes out the back of the storm.” Where there’s lightning, a crash of thunder isn’t far behind. If a storm has passed and the sun has returned, it can make lightning flashes difficult or even impossible to see. Astronomers call these lightning strikes a “bolt from the blue”.
To follow the standard 30/30 rule for lightning, count the amount of time that passes between seeing lightning and hearing thunder. If it is less than 30 seconds, the thunderstorm is close enough to be dangerous and you should seek shelter. Then wait at least 30 minutes after the last thump of thunder and lightning flash before leaving. If you can’t see any lightning, just start counting down from 30 minutes after you hear the last thunder rumble as a good back-up rule.
Also, listen to some of nature’s signals if you do go back outside. If your hair starts to stand up, showing signs of static electricity, or you have a tingling sensation on your skin, it is a sign that an electrical charge is building and you should seek shelter immediately.

Perfectionism is like a set of magical pills. One pill relieves shame. The next covers up sad memories. Another cures the fear of regret. And the last eases our awareness of a meaningless existence. Perfectionism is exciting because it makes everything important. But when everything is important, mistakes feel intolerable. At its core is the fear of uncertainty. Thus, perfectionists often focus on finding the “right answers”. Many perfectionists keep looking for “root causes”, believing that deep insights will lead to better lives by clarifying options. Like archaeologists who study the societies and people of the past, they dig for answers—which is why they often end up in therapy. Yet, therapy provides little help and seldom leads to the outcomes they want.
Acceptance, rather than change, is the more important part of therapy for them. It helps free the patient from their own standards and expectations, allowing them to make light of their mistakes and even learn from them. Acknowledging the limits of perfectionism can finally bring peace.
Instead of worrying about the “right decisions” and what you “should” do, it might be more helpful to think about what you would do if you weren’t so afraid. This belief comes from a strong need for certainty and the false idea that it’s attainable. Letting go of that fear can open up a new world—one that’s simpler but less intense.
