In Azerbaijan, fire symbolizes the heart and energy of the nation while the Chinese character “Yan”, meaning “flame”, similarly represents passion and spirit. For the 17-year-old Eldar from Baku, Azerbaijan, his Chinese name He Yan is more than a label. It carries a fire from the Caspian Seas to the Haihe River in North China.
His mother, a journalist, taught him the power of storytelling; his father, an international oil trader, offered a global outlook. Having lived in Russia for four years and studied in Iraq for a year, he mastered Azerbaijani, Russian, English and self-taught Mandarin. This multicultural advantage not only opened windows to the world but also fueled a will to begin a journey of exploring China.
Recognizing China’s key role in the Belt and Road Initiative, his father said, “Mastering Chinese will allow you to engage more deeply with China’s future.” Taking this to heart, He Yan joined the Confucius Institute at Baku State University in 2022, and his commitment to after-school Chinese classes became the flame that kept the flame alive.
A major turning point came in 2023 when he won third place in Azerbaijan’s “Chinese Bridge” competition, earning a spot in a summer camp at Anhui University. There, he practiced writing the complex Chinese character biang and traveled to scenic spots like Huangshan and the city of Shanghai. “China was no longer just a concept on a map. It became real and vivid,” he recalled. In September 2024, the fire crossed Eurasia to take root in Tianjin. He became the youngest international student at Tianjin University.
The 2025 China-Azerbaijan natural resources agreement filled him with excitement. “This will bring our people closer together.” Now a student majoring in electronic information engineering, He Yan dreams of building a digital bridge with his technical skills, connecting his homeland’s energy resources with China’s technological strength. “I want to tell China-Azerbaijan stories in Chinese, and use technology to carry forward the flame of friendship between the two nations,” he said.
24. What motivated He Yan’s journey of exploring China
A. His unique perspective.
B. His outstanding ability.
C. His cross-cultural background.
D. His family’s financial support.
25. What can we infer from He Yan’s summer camp trip to China
A. He developed a stronger interest in Shanghai.
B. He obtained a deeper understanding of China.
C. He decided to study Chinese later.
D. He found it tough to write the character biang.
26. What is He Yan’s dream
A. Bonding Azerbaijan with the world.
B. Working as an information engineer.
C. Signing China-Azerbaijan agreement.
D. Pushing China-Azerbaijan joint growth.
27. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Flame Lights a Pathway to China
B. Culture Bridges a Technical Gap
C. Talent Shines in the World Stage
D. Passion Fuels the Global Dream
C
What shapes our sleep time A study has found while our biological clocks influence our sleep patterns, they are not the only factor determining how long we sleep each night. Cultural pressures and daily responsibilities may override our biological clocks and decide when we go to sleep, thus shaping people’s total sleep time. “Bedtime is more under control of society, and wake time is more determined by biological clocks,” according to Walsh, a co-author of the study.
When the researchers looked at how sleep times varied among people of different ages and between the sexes, they found that middle-aged men got the least sleep—often less than the recommended seven to eight hours per night. Moreover, they found that sleep durations decrease with age and people’s sleep schedules seemed to become more similar to the habits of their peers as they got older. One possible explanation for this is that older people tend to have a narrower period of time within which they can readily fall and stay asleep.
Examining the average sleep time across different countries, the researchers noted countries that are geographically and culturally close to each other tended to have similar sleep patterns. They found people in Singapore and Japan got the least amount of sleep, with an average of about seven hours and 24 minutes per night, whereas people in the Netherlands got the most sleep on average with eight hours and 12 minutes. Though the difference in average sleep duration between these countries may seem tremendous, every half-hour of sleep actually has a big impact on people’s cognitive function and long-term health, the researchers said.
The new findings also act as a reminder that sleep is more important than people may realize. Even if someone is getting six hours of sleep per night, that person is still building up a sleep debt, which can rapidly lead to physical and mental exhaustion, with potentially serious consequences. “It doesn’t take that many days of sleep debt before you’re functionally drunk,” explained Walsh.
28. What can we learn about our biological clocks from paragraph 1
A. They have little effect on sleep.
B. They mainly control wake time.
C. They decide how long we sleep.
D. They can be damaged by pressure.
29. Why do elderly people tend to have similar sleep habits
A. They suffer long sleep durations.
B. They shoulder light daily duties.
C. They have similar sleep windows.
D. They face little social pressures.
30. What does the underlined word “tremendous” mean in paragraph 3
A. Ideal. B. Definite. C. Clear. D. Significant.
31. What can we infer from Walsh’s words
A. More sleep is not necessarily better.
B. Sleep debt is similar to being drunk.
C. Lack of sleep may do harm before long.
D. Six hours of sleep can serve a person well.
D
Increased urbanisation will put increasing pressure on our green spaces, which is expected to have a significant effect on our physical and mental health, as well as the health of our ecosystems. Therefore, it is important to integrate more green spaces into our urban environment. To cope with this issue, an alternative, bioreceptive concrete has emerged, promising a more sustainable path forward.
Unlike traditional structural concrete, bioreceptive concrete is engineered to support the growth of living organisms on its surface, according to Dr. Jakubovskis, chief research fellow at Vilnius Tech University in Lithuania. This design aims to create living and self-sustaining micro-ecosystems that enhance a building’s aesthetic appeal and environmental functionality, optimizing both mechanical and biological properties, which transforms non-reactive surfaces into active ecosystems that can regulate urban energy, water, and carbon cycles.
As Dr. Jakubovskis states, the implications of bioreceptive concrete, which offers substantial ecological advantages over other composite materials, are significant and far-reaching. It enhances sound comfort, boosting high-frequency sound absorption up to 50%, benefiting mental performance and well-being in urban settings, and improves air quality by capturing up to 30% more fine particles than bare covering layers, in line with the WHO’s “Healthy Buildings” goals. Furthermore, carbon sequestration is also facilitated, estimated at 10-20 grams per square meter annually.
The aesthetic evolution of bioreceptive concrete does present some challenges, like uncontrolled colonisation by some organisms, causing undesirable discoloration. To unlock its full potential, Dr. Jakubovskis highlights the urgent need for comprehensive field studies across diverse climatic conditions. Current methodologies prioritize short-term lab tests, failing to capture the complexities and long-term success of colonisation. Advancements in non-destructive testing, like accessible, low-cost 3D mapping, could provide critical insights into colonisation development and organism survivability.
Far from being a mere curiosity, bioreceptive concrete emerges as a connection between technology and nature. Looking ahead, the future is already taking shape; this vision has the potential to become a powerful tool for urban adaptability in redefining urban landscapes by integrating greenery into our built environment.
32. What is the purpose of developing bioreceptive concrete
A. To resolve green colonisation.
B. To enhance human well-being.
C. To regulate rapid urbanisation.
D. To minimize construction cost.
33. What disadvantage does traditional concrete have according to the text
A. It requires much maintenance.
B. It presents no aesthetic appeal.
C. It consumes massive resources.
D. It features non-reactive surfaces.
34. How does the author introduce the benefits of bioreceptive concrete
A. By listing relevant statistics.
B. By quoting previous studies.
C. By comparing various views.
D. By presenting practical cases.
35. What is suggested by Dr. Jakubovskis to address the challenges
A. Building 3D virtual models.
B. Conducting field research.
C. Integrating theoretical bases.
D. Providing cost-gain estimates.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ashley Lowry was one of those teachers everyone loves at Wallace Elementary, who always found new ideas to get her students excited about learning. One December morning, she entered the classroom, crayons (蜡笔) in one hand and a thick pile of drawing paper pressed against her chest.
“Today, we’ll have a simple art project: design your dream winter hat,” she told the students, her voice warm and encouraging. Instantly, the children’s eyes lit up. “You can pick any colors you want, any patterns you like,” she continued. “But the only rule was that the work should be original—no copying, no holding back. Just let your imagination run wild.”
While not knowing why, all the students got down to coloring. Soon, the whole room transformed into a world of color and creativity. Their designs were as imaginative as one might expect from a room full of first graders. A boy named Jack tried bright color combinations, drawing a red hat with yellow stars all over it. Another kid, Mia, carefully colored her hat in rainbow hues, counting each color as she went. Others filled their papers with repeating stripes (条纹) in every color imaginable. And in the back corner, a quiet girl named Emily worked slowly—her hat was all white, no stripes, no stars, and no pom-pom (绒球) on top.
When the children finished, Lowry walked from desk to desk and collected all the creations, promising to “keep them safe” over the break. The children nodded and soon forgot about their hats, running off to play.
That evening, Lowry sat at her kitchen table, looking at the drawings. Jack’s star hat, Mia’s rainbow. And Emily’s simple white hat. A thoughtful idea came to her mind: why not turn each of these unique visions into a surprising and warm gift for her dear kids in class

第二节读后续写
However, it was a tough challenge for her. She spent spare time searching online for hat makers and sent all kids’ drawings to customize real hats. It took weeks to get all handmade hats finished before the winter holiday. On the first day back to school, Lowry brought all the warm hats into the classroom.
Their reactions said it all. The kids were amazed to receive hats exactly matching their designs. Jack put on his star hat excitedly while Mia loved her rainbow one deeply. Emily was overjoyed holding her plain white hat. All children realized their creative ideas had come true, feeling the teacher’s sincere love.
