When Gary Leung completely lost his eyesight nearly 15 years ago, it almost destroyed him. The Hong Kong native fell into hopelessness. Just at that time, he found long-distance running.
Now in his 50s, Leung has since completed the 100-kilometer Antarctic Ice Marathon, becoming the first blind person to do so. He even attempted the 400 km "Ultra Gobi", thought to be one of the most challenging foot-races in the world. Recently, he is fresh off a 2,300 km charity run in Japan.
The Japanese "Dark Run 2023" was divided into 40 days, meaning Leung and his guide runners—connected by a string attachment—ran an average of more than 50 km per day. The run was aimed at raising money for young people with serious illnesses and showing them that all people have obstacles (障碍), but we must face them head-on and with bravery.
Though Leung can t physically see things in front of him, he says that doesn t make him fearful of running long distances now. He thinks there s no need to be scared for those who are lacking in something. The universe will equip them with other talents. And they are never alone, just like he wasn t alone on this run. His guide runners gave up their own holidays and put their own money in to fly over and support him.
"I want to pass down the spirit. I m not young anymore and won t be able to run these distances much longer," he says, smiling. "I want to help my younger friends with similar experiences to learn to love exercise. Doing physical activities is not as easy for them as it is for able-bodied people, so I want to set up a stage where we can continue to bring things to them—and for them to do the same for more."
24.What does long-distance running mean for Leung
A. A cure for his eyes. B. A tool for making a living.
C. A way out of life s worst. D. A form of physical exercise.
25.How does Leung finish all his long-distance running
A. He was guided while running.
B. He managed it by himself.
C. He sought help from the organizers.
D. He took advantage of public transport.
26.What can be inferred from Leung s words in the last paragraph
A. He is ready to challenge longer running.
B. He is too tired to go on with charity work.
C. He wants young people to follow his example.
D. He thinks running is easy for the blind to take up.
27.Which words can best describe Leung
A. Humorous and honest. B. Strong-willed and inspiring.
C. Responsible and outgoing. D. Independent and warm-hearted.

Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth. This magical cloth became known as “silk”, and it was so valuable that it was called “China’s Gold”. Following kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
But then, something amazing happened! During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian traveled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name — the Silk Road.
The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across deserts and mountains. From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices, gold and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies and cultures. For example, Chinese inventions like papermaking were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music and even language were shared along this ancient road. In places like the Dunhuang Grottoes in China, you can see how art pieces combined Eastern and Western styles into something distinctive. It can not be seen anywhere else.
The story of the Silk Road tells us how people from faraway lands could become friends through trade and shared ideas. Today, we remember the Silk Road as one of the greatest examples of cooperation and exchange in history. It shows us how important it is to learn about and respect each other’s traditions, and that different cultures can work together to create amazing things.

A. ①→④→③→② B. ①→③→④→② C. ④→①→③→② D. ④→③→②→①
30.What does the underlined word “distinctive” mean in paragraph 4
A. Special. B. Public. C. Popular. D. Strong.
31.What does the story of the Silk Road mainly tell us

Just as damaged teeth can be replaced with gold crowns (齿冠), scientists are exploring how gold can be used to repair damaged parts of the brain.
Scientists at Linkoping University in Sweden said that a "brain of gold" might just be what we need to fight nervous system diseases. The plan is to put gold electrodes (电极) into the affected part of the brain. They will act as "telephone operators" between nerve cells and electronic medical devices, enabling communication so that the nervous system can function normally.
Treatment plans that involve connecting medical devices to the brain already exist. However, the electrodes used are usually made of hard metals, while the brain is like a jelly that "shakes" at the body's slightest movement.
"As the body is constantly in motion, achieving close contact between something that is hard and something that is soft and breakable becomes a problem, " explained Klas Tybrandt, one of the scientists.
This is why the Swedish scientists are using a new material called "gold nanowires" (金纳米线). As the name suggests, these are long, extremely thin gold threads — 1, 000 times thinner than human hair. By putting them into rubber, the scientists have successfully created electrodes that are soft enough to connect comfortably with the human brain.
Gold can be made into structures as small as nanowires. According to Live Science, gold can be stretched, pressed or even rolled into all kinds of shapes without breaking. What's more, gold doesn't react with other chemicals in the human brain, making it a safe choice. Once placed in the brain, gold nanowires can last for at least three years, which is longer than many materials currently in use.
32.What role will gold electrodes play in treating nervous system diseases
A. Replacing damaged nerve cells.
B. Serving as a communication link.
C. Activating different brain regions.
D.
Protecting the brain's unaffected parts.
33.What can we learn about gold nanowires
A. They are harder than rubber.
B. They are as thin as human hair.
C. They can be placed into the brain.
D. They are in the final stage of development.
34.Why is gold a safe choice for use in the brain
A. It can be stretched by the brain.
B. It can be made into various shapes.
C. It is being used to create soft electrodes.
D. It has no negative impact on the brain’s functions.
35.What is the main idea of the passage
A. The unique properties of gold nanowires.
B. The history of gold use in the medical field.
C. The current applications of gold in the brain.
D. The potential use of gold in nervous system treatment.

57.Sara realized how mistaken she was. Here she was, complaining about the very food that her friend cherished. Aliya had never once grumbled about her meals. Sara felt ashamed of her ingratitude. Her mother worked hard every day to provide for the family. Sara understood now that food was not just nourishment; it was a reflection of love and care. She felt a sense of guilt for her thoughtless words and actions. Determined to make a change, Sara stood up, resolved to apologize to her mother and appreciate the meal that awaited her.
But as she reached the kitchen door, she was surprised to see her mother preparing pizza for her. Tears welled up in Sara’s eyes as she witnessed her mother’s unconditional love. “Mum,” she said softly, “I’m so sorry for what I said earlier. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I should have appreciated your effort instead of complaining.” Her mother smiled warmly, her eyes twinkling with tears of joy. “Family is about understanding and e, let’s eat together and enjoy our meal.” They sat down at the table, hearts mended and spirits high, sharing a meal filled with love, understanding, and forgiveness.
