In 2016, when I was on the graduate scheme (计划) at Deutsche Bank, Marie Inafidon, chief executive of Stemettes, who encourages girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), was also working there. I didn’t meet her at the time, but I did read an article about her and her career.
Learning at 21 years old about the career of a young black woman’s succeeding in a traditionally white male-dominated industry was one of the most influential things that ever happened to me. It gave me confidence that it was possible to do well in the office and work on personal external project at the same time.
Role models can play a central role in shaping a young professional’s career. They are especially important if you belong to an under-represented group for whom a lack of representation in the workplace can lead to feeling isolated and lacking in confidence. They can help those just starting out, whether or not they are a graduate as I was, to believe in their own abilities.
There’s a growing need to have accessible role models. Given the tendency to exaggerate (夸大) success stories, hearing from women who talk honestly about the challenges they have faced, either when starting a business or forming a new career path, is much more effective. A study revealed that 70 per cent of girls say they think differently about their futures after hearing from women role models.
I’m frequently asked about what businesses could be doing to increase racial diversity in the workplace. A good starting point is to actively promote and support the voices of the people in the organisation that are leading positive change and inspiring others. This makes a real difference. Unlike the tokenism (装样子) I still come across, which results in individuals being made the lone representative for a group without real support from the organisation.
Things came full circle for me when I interviewed Ms. Inafidon for my book in 2019. I was able to tell her of the incredible impact her passion and confidence had had on me as a graduate trainee and how grateful I would always be for that.
24. What do we learn about Marie Inafidon
A. She became successful at 21.
B. She was a trainee at Deutsche Bank.
C. She encouraged girls to take up STEM-related work.
D. She helped the author with her external project personally.
25. Who can benefit most from role models in the workplace according to the third paragraph
A. Experienced professionals.
B. A graduate eager to succeed.
C. People without special abilities.
D. The young from an under-represented group.
26. What is effective in changing girls’ mindset
A. Taking on challenging projects.
B. Reading more made-up success stories.
C. Starting their own business as early as possible.
D. Listening to women role models share their experiences.
27. What should businesses do to increase racial diversity in the workplace according to the author
A. Encourage positive opinions.
B. Make more colored people authorities.
C. Include more people of different races.
D. Understand the true meaning of tokenism.
C
Adults should prioritize book reading, which helps promote mental health, according to a global study conducted in 2023. Researchers surveyed 15,000 participants aged 25-60 across 25 countries, combining questionnaires with cognitive tests. The findings highlight alarming trends and solutions.
In the past decade, weekly reading rates dropped sharply. Only 33% of adults read books weekly, compared to 51%in2013. Chinese adults demonstrated slightly higher engagement, with 38% reading printed books monthly — higher than the global average of 29%. However, 63% admitted to spending over 3.5 hours daily on short video or social media. European nations like Italy and Spain mirrored this pattern, where 68% cited “exhaustion from work” as the primary barrier.
Regular readers demonstrated significant advantages. Those dedicating over 5 hours weekly to books scored 28% higher in memory and problem-solving assessments. Emotionally, 43% of frequent readers reported effective stress management techniques, versus 19% among non-readers. Brain scans showed that sustained reading strengthens neural pathways in the prefrontal cortex (大脑前额叶皮层), which governs decision-making. Dr. Helen Park, a neurologist from Yale, explains: “Deep reading acts as cognitive training, much like lifting weights for the mind.”
Cultural divides appeared in content preferences. Asian readers prioritized educational materials —58% chose history, science, or career-related books. In contrast, 61% of Western participants favored fiction for relaxation. Digital adoption also varied: e-books accounted for 70% of adult reading in the U. S. and U. K., while 76% of Asian readers preferred printed books. Researchers link this to cultural traditions; for instance, China’s book-friendly society concept emphasizes tactile(触觉的) and visual engagement with texts.
The study proposes actionable strategies. Governments are urged to launch workplace reading initiatives — companies like Siemens and Huawei now offer 20-minute paid “reading breaks” daily, observing 15-20% productivity increases. Schools should inspire parental reading through community programs. “Reading isn’t a luxury — it’s a lifelong health investment,” insists Dr. Carlos Mendez, the study’s lead author. “Even 12 minutes daily builds mental resilience(恢复力) across lifetimes.”
28. What method did researchers use to study reading’s impact on the brain
A. Interviews with educators.
B. Analysis of book sales data.
C. Social media usage tracking.
D. Brain scans and cognitive tests.
29. Why might Chinese readers prefer printed books
A. Limited access to e-books.
B. Influence of traditional values.
C. Lower costs of printed materials.
D. Government restrictions on digital content.
30. How does Dr. Carlos Mendez view reading
A. As a luxury for the wealthy.
B. As a popular trend in society.
C. As a way to restore mental power.
D. As a substitute for physical exercise.
31. Which is the best title for the text
A. Reading Decline: Causes and Fixes
B. Work Stress: The Main Barrier to Reading
C. Digital Books vs.Paper Books:A Global Debate
D. Short Videos: The Killer of Traditional Reading
D
In their recent book, The AI Con, linguist Emily M. Bender and social scientist Alex Hanna critically analyze the widespread exaggeration (夸大) about artificial intelligence (AI). They argue that the exaggerated claims of AI’s transformative power obscure the real, ongoing harms it is already causing.
Bender and Hanna argue that companies are using AI to reduce costs by undermining human jobs. Contrary to popular belief, “AI is not going to replace your job,” they maintain, but it will likely transform your job into one that is undervalued and less paid. Here, they refer to recent labor actions, such as the 2023 strikes by Hollywood writers and actors, as cases illustrating workers’ resistance to AI-generated content.
In fields such as education, the use of automated decision-making systems often reflects the overconfidence in AI’s capacity. The adoption of AI, the authors maintain, overlooks fundamental human interactions, falsely assuming that “seeking the right answers is all that is needed for education.”
The book also evaluates exaggerated claims about AI’s impact on creative and scientific fields, particularly regarding its destructive effects on art, journalism, and scientific practice. The authors argue that AI-generated artistic creativity is, most of the time, based on statistical probabilities rather than real understanding.
Bender and Hanna conclude their book by arguing that the exaggeration about AI primarily benefits major companies, investors, and governments that use technology and by calling for a critical examination of AI systems: “What is being automated ” and “Who benefits... and who is harmed ”
While the book offers an interesting viewpoint, it provides only a partial view of the current AI landscape. Large language models (LLMs) have shown promising capabilities in fields such as biomedicine and ecology. This potential application is particularly noticeable considering the new path opened by agentic AI, an area the book does not cover.
32. The word “obscure” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. reveal B. hide C. exaggerate D. worsen
33. Why do the authors mention the 2023 Hollywood strikes
A. To prove AI has replaced numerous jobs in the film industry.
B. To show workers’ opposition to AI’s harm to their work value.
C. To illustrate the high cost of AI-generated content production.
D. To argue that AI cannot create quality artistic works.
34. Which of the following would Bender and Hanna most likely agree with
A. AI brings more high-paying jobs for workers.
B. AI’s “creativity” is based on real understanding.
C. Education should focus only on seeking right answers.
D. AI exaggeration serves the interests of the capital side.
35. What can we learn about The AI Con from the last paragraph
A. It fully covers the latest developments in AI.
B. It denies the potential of LLMs in biomedicine.
C. It ignores the new field of agentic AI.
D. It is widely criticized by AI researchers.

The day before yesterday, my class played a basketball game. As their chemistry teacher and class advisor, I watched as our team, led by Tom, the captain, fought hard. Tom’s quick moves and precise passes inspired his teammates. They battled as one, making every play count. The game was intense, with both teams neck and neck. In the final seconds, Tom made a daring drive to the hoop (篮筐), but the opponent scored a last-minute shot. We lost by just one point.
The next morning, the classroom was filled with a heavy atmosphere. Tom sat quietly, his head down, still weighed down by the loss. The rest of the class mirrored his mood—silent and withdrawn. It was clear that the defeat had dampened their spirits. I knew I had to do something to lift their spirits and remind them to paying more attention to the process.
The first class of the day was chemistry. As I looked at the lesson plan quickly, an idea began to take shape. I quickly prepared the necessary laboratory equipment and walked into the classroom.
“Alright, everyone,” I said, trying to get their attention. “I’m going to conduct an experiment, and I want you to observe it carefully. You’ll need to describe what you see afterward.” The room grew a little quieter as curiosity began to catch on. They turned their attention to me, and I could see a sign of interest in their eyes.
I picked up a piece of magnesium ribbon (镁条) and held it with a holder. When I brought it close to the burner fire, the ribbon started to flash. The whole class watched the experiment in amazement, their eyes wide open, focusing on my operation in awe. The magnesium ribbon burned away, leaving behind a soft white powder.

“What impressed you most in the experiment ” I asked.
Students said the bright burning was unforgettable while the magnesium finally turned into powder. I explained that splendid burning was its valuable process though it disappeared in the end, just like their basketball match. They tried their best and gained progress, which mattered more than winning the game. All students calmed down and started to rethink the loss.
With my encouragement, Tom opened up and shared more. He realized the whole team had gained experience and friendship in the match instead of nothing. He cheered up and promised to train harder with teammates. The gloomy mood faded away and the whole class regained confidence again.
