I worked as a volunteer for an organization that helped the poor in Haiti. One year, I decided to take my son Brian there for a week, hoping to educate him.
Before setting out, I told Brian this trip would be tiring and hard. For the first two days, he said almost nothing. I worried the trip was too much for a 13-year-old boy. Then on the third day, when we were climbing over high rocky mountains, he turned to me and smiled, “Really hard.”
After that, a five-year-old girl, wearing a too large dress and broken shoes, followed Brian around and was crazy about everything about him. Later he said regretfully (遗憾地), “I wish I could speak French.” I was surprised that this was from a boy who always hated French classes.
Then my quiet son Brian started to chat with Gaby, our host, and kept asking questions about the country and its people. He became active!
However, the moment that really reached my heart happened in a village deep in the mountains. I was interviewing a woman villager for an article. By working hard, she had learned to read and write and became part of the leadership (领导层) of the village
Learning her story, Brian was greatly touched. His eyes were filled with tears and there was love and respect on his face. He finally understood the importance of my work. When leaving for home, Brian even offered to stay as a volunteer. This trip was really meaningful.

Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the greatest composers in history. His music has touched millions of people around the world. But few know the pain and struggle behind his most famous work, Ode to Joy (from his Ninth Symphony).
At the age of 26, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. This was a terrible disaster for a musician—hearing is the most important sense for creating music. As years passed, his hearing got worse and worse. By his 40s, he was almost completely deaf. He could not hear his own music or the applause of the audience. At times, he felt so hopeless that he even thought about giving up on music.
But Beethoven was a man of strong will. He refused to let his disability defeat him. He bit a wooden stick attached to his piano and felt the vibrations to “hear” the sound. He wrote music with all his heart, pouring his feelings of anger, hope and courage into every note.
In 1824, when Beethoven was 54, he finished his Ninth Symphony. The last part, Ode to Joy, is a powerful song about peace and happiness. At the first performance, Beethoven stood on the stage to conduct. He could not hear the loud applause, but when a singer gently turned him around, he saw the audience standing and clapping wildly. Tears rolled down his face.
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is more than just music. It is a cry against fate, a celebration of human spirit. It tells us that no matter how hard life is, we can still fight and create beauty.

Do you want to save the environment You probably can’t fix everything on your own, but by taking small steps and keeping the environment in mind every day, you can make a difference.
1 Think green
Change yourself to think about the environment as you live your life. If you shut off lights when you leave the room and turn off your TV when you are not watching it, you will save energy. If you take shorter showers, you will save water.
2 Shop green
Shopping is fun, but buying things you don’t need is wasteful and bad for the earth. Before you buy something, ask yourself if you will really need it. Keep yourself away from buying products with unnecessary packages (包装), and whenever possible, buy things that were locally made instead of those shipped from far away.
3 Dress green
Wear green trousers and T-shirts if you want. But what really matters isn’t the color, it’s how the clothes were made. If you want to help the environment, the best place to find the clothes is at a vintage store, where you can buy second-hand clothes, but you might not want to buy everything used. No matter where you shop, keep an eye out for products made from environmentally friendly materials, like organic (有机的) cotton which is grown without the use of pesticides (杀虫剂).
4 Study green
What’s better than learning about the environment Save it while you learn. It can be as simple as using both sides of a piece of paper before you recycle it, or reusing an old textbook instead of buying a new one. If you want to do more, join an environment group at your school, and encourage your friends to join you, too.
