This summer I came face-to-face with three deep-rooted fears: heights, bears, and ageing.
Two friends joined me on a four-day wilderness getaway, and since we were all in our seventies, we decided we’d better go while we still could. Our adventure began with a scary drive up a winding mountain road.
On one hike, I found myself hanging onto a wire on a bridge made of two partly rotten (腐烂的) logs, suspended high above rushing rapids. I would never have attempted it without our guide ahead, mouthing encouraging words. Fixing my eyes on her boots, I inched along the shaky logs. Somehow, I made it across, flooded with a rush of intense excitement and huge relief.
Later, after spotting bear tracks, we were told to make loud noises, which soon became a game once the tension faded.
Until suddenly, time stood still.
We had just crossed a stream when the guide whispered, “There’s a bear.” I looked up in disbelief and saw not one, but two, about ten meters above us—the brown mother in front, her cub behind.
Though scared speechless, I couldn’t help noticing how beautiful they looked in their natural setting. I wondered if it would be my last memory. As they started towards us, we recovered enough to shout and wave our hiking poles. Taken aback, they stopped, and then slowly turned away. Another fear was overcome!
On our final morning, after a quiet, thoughtful walk through the forest, we were asked to bring back a “meaningful” stick, rock, and leaf to share what would “stick” with us, what “rocked,” and what we would “leaf” behind. The bond of friendship would stick with me. Women supporting one another truly rocked. And I hoped to leave some fears behind.
Our guide ended by expressing her admiration, praising not only our fitness but also our positive attitude, and saying she hoped to be like us in another thirty or forty years. Those unexpected words warmed my heart and eased my fear of being “over the hill.” Being valued for what we had accomplished felt like winning an Olympic medal — even if just for participation.
24. How did the author cross the bridge
A. By taking mindful steps. B. By rushing across it bravely.
C. By using her sense of direction. D. By having the guide drag her over.
25. Why did the bears leave
A. They were attracted by the natural setting.
B. They were afraid of the noise of the rapids.
C. They were surprised at the group’s actions.
D. They were threatened by the guide’s rocks.
26. Why did the guide ask them for a stick, rock, and leaf
A. To pick up some souvenirs. B. To reflect on the journey.
C. To symbolize their teamwork. D. To check their observation skills.
27. What does the underlined phrase “over the hill” in the last paragraph mean
A. Past the peak of youth. B. Too high to go down.
C. Out of place in society. D. Beyond physical limits.
C
I sometimes feel I’m in a daily struggle not to become a shallower version of myself. The driver of shallowization is technology, the way it reduces attention span, fills the day with unnecessary distractions (分散注意). So I’m trying to take countermeasures. I flee to the arts.
I’m looking for those experiences we all have as kids: becoming so enveloped by an adventure story that you refuse to put it down to go to dinner; getting so entirely swept up in some piece of music that you feel primeval (原始的) passions thumping within you; encountering a painting so beautiful it feels like you’ve walked right into its alternative world.
The normal thing to say about such experiences is that you’ve lost yourself in a book or a song — lost track of space and time. But it is more accurate to say that a piece of art has quieted the self-conscious ego voice that is normally chattering away within. A piece of art has served as a gateway to a deeper realm of the mind. It has opened up that hidden, semiconscious kingdom within us from which emotions emerge, where our moral sentiments(情绪) are found.
The arts work on us at that deep level, the level that really matters. You give me somebody who disagrees with me on every issue, but who has a good heart — who has the ability to show sympathy with others, participate in their woes, longing and dreams — well, I want to stay with that person all day. You give me a person who agrees with me on every particular, but who has a cold, resentful heart — well, I want nothing to do with her or him.
Artists generally don’t set out to improve other people; they just want to create a perfect expression of their experience. But their art has the potential to humanize the beholder.
28. Why does the author turn to the arts
A. To escape from daily chaos.
B. To imitate the lifestyles of artists.
C. To avoid shallowization from technology.
D. To seek inner peace through dialogues.
29. According to the text, how does art affect our inner world
A. By enabling us to keep sustainable focus.
B. By expanding keen insights into the world.
C. By enhancing information processing ability.
D. By allowing access to deep levels of the mind.
30. What is the value of engaging with the arts according to paragraph 4
A. Developing genuine passions for art.
B. Acquiring the ability to understand others.
C. Learning the art appreciation techniques.
D. Strengthening social links between people.
31. What will be talked about after the last paragraph
A. The strategies for promoting ourselves.
B. The perspectives on conveying true beauty.
C. The approaches to humanizing artworks.
D. The principles of maintaining motivations.
D
As for advantages of bilingualism, the state or practice of mastering two languages, beyond the conversational doors it can open, it’s supposed to improve multiple abilities, including the ability to plan complex tasks and update beliefs as new information arrives. Most striking, studies have even shown that bilinguals exhibit a later onset of dementia (痴呆症). But some of these studies have failed to repeat, leaving experts wondering whether the effect is real, and if so, what exactly it consists of.
The good news is that it’s never too late to start learning a new language, if you want your brains to benefit. The biggest benefit seem to come to those with full mastery of a second language, typically native bilinguals or those who use two languages nearly daily. Interpreters and translators, for instance, outperform people who only can speak or use one language at alternating between simple math tasks, signaling better mental regulation, as was proven in a research.
Another research has revealed that bilingual young children outperform their peers in early cognitive (认知的) development. It found that a great many of relevant studies confirmed a bilingual advantage among children under six.
Concerning the other end of life or when it comes to old age, Ellen Bialystok of York University, in Canada, has compared the cognitive protection that bilingualism offers to the coverage of a slice of bread afforded by a slice of holy Swiss cheese. Learning new languages is similar to piling up the cheese slices. Their holes occur in different places, thus collectively offering greater protection.
All these studies take for granted the uncontroversial (无争议的) mental superpower that you get from language study. Even if you cannot pick your parents and be fluent from childhood, that should be more than enough reason to give it a go.
32. What does the underlined word “it” probably refer to in Paragraph 1
A. The effect of bilingualism.
B. The repeat of some studies.
C. The doubt of some experts.
D. The later onset of dementia.
33. What might be compared to “a piece of bread” in Paragraph 4
A. A child’s cognition.
B. An old man’s brain.
C. The cognitive growth.
D. The mental protection.
34. What benefit of bilingualism is highlighted in the text
A. Lifting multiple abilities.
B. Enhancing relationships.
C. Powering up our brains.
D. Upgrading our key beliefs.
35. What can be the purpose of the text
A. To do master foreign languages!
B. To be a bilingual teenager!
C. To see benefits of bilingualism!
D. To give bilingualism a shot!
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
I put on a headset, and within seconds I am somewhere else. Ice sheets float on dark water. Wind brushes past my ears, sharp and restless. In the distance, mountains glow (发光) under the moonlight. Moments later, I find myself inside a museum, leaning close to a painting I have never seen in real life. __36__ This is the promise of virtual reality (VR): a world delivered to us without leaving home.
There is much to appreciate in this form of travel. __37__ There is no need to consider weather conditions, health issues or financial pressure. You may enter distant places at any moment and leave just as freely. For those restricted by schedule, health, or income, VR quietly removes barriers that traditional travel often sets in place.
__38__ Travelers wander through unfamiliar streets, sample local dishes, and engage face-to-face with people shaped by different traditions. Such encounters awaken the senses and create lasting memories.More importantly, they change how places feel to us, not just how we understand them.
This distinction is clear, because learning about a destination is not the same as being there. Virtual travel offers designed scenes and programmed sensations, but it remains carefully controlled. Real travel, by contrast, is shaped by unpredictability. __39__ In those unplanned moments, understanding becomes lived rather than recorded.
Virtual reality will undoubtedly continue to evolve, enriching how we preview journeys and imagine distant worlds. Still, it cannot replace actual presence. Travel is not simply about seeing farther; it is also about feeling where you stand. __40__
A. I am not moving, yet I am traveling.
B. Yet real travel leaves a deeper mark.
C. My feet ache as my journey stretches across the day.
D. Virtual journeys are convenient, time-saving, and widely accessible.
E. Some knowledge, it seems, only arrives when your feet are on the ground.
F. It demands choices, adaptation, and constant awareness of the unexpected.
G. But the convenience may gradually weaken our desire to explore the real world.

Instead, I grabbed an old, ugly composition notebook with a __45__ cover and dog-eared corners. I started to __46__ it with everything: morning pages, random thoughts and reminders. This is surprisingly __47__. I actually write. Every day. Without exception.
The psychology is real. When we __48__ something too much, we place limits around it, feeling it is “too good”. But the ugly notebook carries no such __49__. It has been used. It tells me, “This is a __50__ for thinking and living, not a museum piece.”
Here’s the thing: __51__ notebooks are idea incubators (孵化器). With the pressure off, you experiment more. You try things that might __52__. And in that freedom, bad ideas I was __53__ embarrassed about gradually evolved into work I’m proud of. And that’s where the real work of creation happens.
The best notebook is never the most beautiful one. It’s the one you’ll actually __54__. Because the magic happens in the __55__, not in perfect pages.
Your ugly notebook is waiting.

Ray of Light
Emma had never liked the old community library. Its old lights and dusty shelves made her feel as if she were stepping into a forgotten world.Yet that rainy Thursday afternoon, she had no choice but to go there. Her group project was due the next day, and she still needed several references that could only be found in the library’s archive room.
As she shook off the rainwater and walked inside, she heard a low voice coming from behind the front desk.It belonged to Mr. Harris, the elderly librarian who had worked there longer than anyone could remember. He looked pale and tired, but when he saw Emma, he forced a gentle smile.“The archive room is open today. Just be careful — the lights have been flickering again.”Emma nodded, though she felt a slight sense of unease. The library was unusually quiet, with only the sound of the storm tapping against the windows. She headed toward the archive room and began searching through the shelves. Minutes turned into an hour. She finally found the last book she needed, but as she turned to leave, the lights went out completely.A wave of darkness swallowed the room.Emma froze. She took a step forward but hit a shelf. Panic rose in her chest. She reached for her phone, only to realize the battery had died earlier.Just then, she heard something — a cough. A weak one. “Mr. Harris ” she called. No answer.
Then she moved slowly through the dark hallway, feeling her way along the wall. The storm outside grew louder. After several tense moments, she spotted a faint light ahead. It was the emergency light above the front desk.
Under it lay Mr. Harris. He had collapsed on the floor.“Sir!” Emma rushed to him. His breathing was shallow, and his hands were icy cold Her heart beat fast. She remembered he lived alone and had no family nearby. She had to act quickly. But the storm had knocked out the power — and likely the phone lines.
Paragraph 1: Emma pushed aside her fear and ran outside.
