When Jessika Kattah was put in a wheelchair, she knew she wouldn’t be able to walk again.
But she could still fly.
Kattah and other disabled people have found a home once a month at iFly, an indoor skydiving center in
Davie, US. Every second Thursday of the month, iFly hosts All Abilities Night, at which individuals with physical
challenges can safely try the free-fall simulation in a giant wind tunnel.
And if you’re thinking that floating in a giant wind tunnel is nothing like jumping out of an airplane, Kattah is
happy to tell you that you’re wrong.
“You definitely get that feeling of flying,” said Kattah, who did skydiving twice. “But the fact that I’m able to
get out of my chair makes it so great. You forget about your disability; you’re just like everybody else.”
The experience is safe and almost anyone can participate. Few people come out without a big smile on their
face, and there will be applause from the people sitting in the observation area.
Chuck Petscher, who is blind, had never been the type of person to try anything risky. But recently he decided
to give indoor skydiving a shot. “I’ll do this, but I’m not jumping out of an airplane,” he joked.
“When you’re disabled, you usually have to do things in a different way from everybody else,” he said. “Here,
you’re doing what everybody else is doing. That’s what turned me on to it.”
This is also why Kattah has started sharing her experiences on a blog. She wants to send a message to people
like her that even though they may feel restricted by their disability, they can always do something they never
thought they’d be able to do.
“If you want to do something, just do it. Don’t let fear guide you. In the end, you’re going to be so happy you
did it,” she says.
24. What’s special about All Abilities Night
A. One can travel on an airplane.
B. One can jump out of an airplane.
C. It takes place four times a month.
D. It offers special service for the disabled.
25. After experiencing skydiving, most people will ______.
A. feel regretful B. feel frightened
C. get a sense of achievement D. get a sense of responsibility
26. Why did Chuck Petscher try indoor skydiving
A. He wanted to be appreciated. B. He liked showing off in public.
C. He could be treated as equals. D. He was interested in adventures.
27. Why does Kattah share her experience on her blog
A. To share her joy and excitement.
B. To promote the skydiving center.
C. To offer some suggestions for the disabled.
D. To encourage others to challenge themselves.

Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human
experience. Keep on reading to know all about the amazing power of music.
A recent study suggests that preterm (早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when
listening to music. A team of experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of University of Alberta, Canada, found that music
had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to
benefit full-term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems. Music can help them
recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to
good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological
(神经系统的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it can really stave off the loss of hearing. There was an
experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians. Participants were asked to pass some listening tests.
Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians, and this difference got clearer with age. This means that a
70-year-old musician hears better than a 50-year-old non-musician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about thrown-away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that
music can help people recover from a heart attack or a heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down
the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the
movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血
管的) system.
28. How does music affect preterm babies
A. It helps reduce their pain.
B. It helps develop their potential in music.
C. It helps improve their hearing systems.
D. It helps repair their cardiovascular systems.
29. What does the underlined phrase “stave off” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Lead to. B. Increase. C. Prevent. D. Break into.
30. Why can music mend a broken heart
A. It can help patients recover in a slow way.
B. It helps make a person feel optimistic all the time.
C. It has a positive effect on human body systems’ work.
D. It can help people prevent diseases caused by anxiety.
31. What may be the best title for text
A. Who can Benefit from Music B. The Best Time to Listen to Music
C. The Way to Choose Quality Music D. How Music Affects Our Mind and Body
D
Midway through The Matrix, Cypher tastes an enormous steak, well aware that his reality is not real, part of a
digital program telling his brain that the steak is a construction and that it is “juicy and delicious”. Two decades
after the movie made its first appearance, something unexpected arises: The future of reality will not only be virtual
but also synthetic (合成的). Cypher’s future meal will be a physical one, synthesized from animal cells.
And the synthesis goes beyond dinner. Starting with components from the natural world, scientists are
learning to engineer microorganisms and build biocomputing systems. However, biology has a tendency to evolve
in unexpected ways.
Synthesized meat is one case in point. The driving forces behind the meat movement are practical. It has been
estimated that cultured (培育的) meat would require 7 to 45 percent less energy and produce 78 to 96 percent less
greenhouse gas than conventional animals farmed for consumption. But once we’re able to synthesize meat,
theoretically, we’ll have the capability to culture meat from any animal, even those we’d never consider eating
today, like dolphins or chimpanzees, which will pose a new regulatory challenge for us.
Using synthetic biology, we can even edit and rewrite life, the technology of which are already in use. In
2021, scientists in some countries announced they had grown monkey embryos (胚胎) injected with human stem
cells. Here comes the situation worth considering, such a monkey-human hybrid will demonstrate qualities that are
somewhere between humans, on which experimentation isn’t allowed, and animals, which are often raised
specifically for research. How will we decide when an animal becomes too human
Depending on where you stand, the synthetic realities land somewhere between “really exciting” and
“critically concerning”. As individuals, we undertake a shared responsibility to make good choices about this
coming synthetic technology.
32. What do we know about Cypher’s steak in the movie
A. It is anything but appetizing. B. It is enjoyed in a virtual world.
C. It is synthesized from animal cells. D. It is a construction made by himself.
33. What’s the advantage of synthesized meat
A. It is more nutritious. B. It is more energy-consuming.
C. It is more environment-friendly. D. It is more controllable in regulation.
34. What can we know about the monkey in paragraph 4
A. The monkey has been developed worldwide.
B. The monkey looks like a human being.
C. The monkey-human hybrid is very popular.
D. The monkey has been put into human stem cells.
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To promote synthetic technology.
B. To indicate challenges of synthetic technology.
C. To stress the importance of synthetic technology.
D. To introduce the development of synthetic technology.
第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选
项。
Brand New You
We’re always told that no one likes a show-off, but a little bit of boasting (夸耀) does us all the world of good.
Once a year I teach a class on building personal brand to a group of women in the creative industries. At the
start I ask each of the attendees how they feel about the phrase “personal brand”. 36 Most of them will tell
me it feels too much like boasting. By the end of the session, however, there’s a change in mood and it always
comes down to one key point that I think everyone should know. So I’m sharing it here!
It’s really quite simple: acknowledging your strengths does not mean you boast yourself. 37 But then
we do an exercise that proves my point. I put the women in pairs and give them five minutes each to talk about
things they love and are good at. When I give the instructions I am greeted by looks of horror. Five minutes ! Only
talking about themselves ! What if the other person thinks they’re boasting
38 So is sharing it with others. And yet it’s so lovely to hear someone else share their passion. The
room is filled with connection, laughter and joy. And so I tell them, and now you, if you only take one thing away
from this workshop let it be this: sharing what you love and are good at—your passion—with someone else, never
comes across as boasting. 39
And if you want to feel really great today, ask someone to share what they love and are good at with you. If
they only talk about what they love, encourage them to tell you why they’re good at it. 40 Maybe we’ll all
feel better for it.
A. It is a form of connection and a gift.
B. Almost everyone feels uneasy about it.
C. Many people are impressed by your passion.
D. Boast your strengths by building your personal brand.
E. Try to create a “boasting culture” in our pride-avoidant society.
F. When I say this in the workshop, there are always raised eyebrows.
G. Owning what we are good at is an unfamiliar concept in our culture.

In our fast-paced modern life, many people feel anxious and lost, often 56 (turn) to busy work to

always 57 (find) in the natural world if we are willing to pause and look around.

Tina, a high school student, had a great passion for baking. With her parents’ support, Tina dreamed of
opening her own bakery, a place where she could turn her interest into a business. However, she knew the
importance of improving her skills and gaining real-world experience.
Therefore, every Saturday, without fail, she would set up a small but charming table at a local park. The park,
filled with families and laughter, was the perfect place for Tina to sell her creations. Her table, neatly laid out with
colorful homemade cookies and cakes, attracted passers-by with the desserts’ smell.
On a particularly bright and sunny afternoon, as Tina was carefully arranging her chocolate cookies and cakes,
her attention was drawn to an elderly woman sitting alone on a bench. The woman, with her silver hair and sad
eyes, seemed lost in thought. As the hours went by, Tina noticed that the woman remained where she was,
seemingly forgotten by the world. A sense of concern washed over Tina. So she decided to act. She poured a cup of
warm tea carefully and cut a generous slice of her rich chocolate cake, a crowd favorite, and approached the
woman.
“I thought you might like some snacks,” Tina said with a warm, inviting smile. The woman’s face lit up as she
accepted the treat. “Thank you, dear. I haven’t had such a delicious treat since my retirement,” she responded, her
voice soft yet filled with gratitude. As she enjoyed the cake, tears rolled down her face.
A little shocked, Tina asked what had happened. The woman introduced herself as Mrs. Robins, who had been
a baker before she retired. Since losing her husband to cancer a week ago, she had been living alone. Her visits to
the park were her escape from the loneliness that filled her quiet home. Tina listened attentively, her heart touched
by the woman’s story.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Tina decided to help Mrs. Robins out.
As their relationship deepened, Tina shared her dream.

第二节
Tina decided to help Mrs. Robins out. Every Saturday, as Tina saw Mrs. Robins, she treated Mrs. Robins to
her desserts generously, chatted with Mrs. Robins and listened to more of Mrs. Robins’ stories. It comforted the
elderly woman a lot and made her feel she was cared about. Influenced by Tina’s kindness, Mrs. Robins gradually
worked through her sorrow, her eyes regaining their sparkle, and she started to embrace life again.
As their relationship deepened, Tina shared her dream. Mrs. Robins was eager to support her, sharing her
baking stories and valuable baking experience without reservation with Tina and offered her tips on opening a
bakery. Assisted by Mrs. Robins, the small table has grown into a cozy bakery, which became a symbol of the
power of kindness and the beautiful connection between generations. Over time, Tina’s bakery had been on the up
and up with a constant stream of visitors, where love and warmth were always on the menu.

becoming a blogger and writing about my travels made complete sense. Then how did I pick where to go first
Well, unlike my usual picks like Paris or London, I chose Hainan in China as my first place to go. And it was
amazing!
Now you might be wondering how I support myself. Some bloggers focus on hiking, which requires proper
clothing, and get paid for recommending clothes in their posts. I thought about teaching English, but I didn’t have
much time. Luckily, I landed a deal with a company that was interested in the pictures I took on my travels.
During the journey, I have met people living in tough conditions who never give up, and it’s shown me the
importance of keeping up. Through my blogs, I hope I’ve opened people’s eyes to the beauty of our world.
