A year ago, Sushila Meena wouldn’t have even dreamt of playing with famous sports persons like Sachin Tendulkar. But sometimes dreams come true when you never had. The 10-year-old cricketer (板球手) shot to fame after Tendulkar shared a video of her bowling (投球) winning the 2021 ICC World Cup, comparing her to Zaheer Khan, who was the key player in India at the national media. But her story is much more than an Instagram post. Sushila’s journey from a small village to national fame is a testament to her hard work. And it couldn’t have been possible without the support of her coach, Ishwar Meena.
Ishwar Meena, a dedicated coach, began teaching girls in June 2017 when the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup was in full swing. He started training girls as a way to connect them with their school and to enable them to excel in women’s cricket—where competition is less fierce. “If they play cricket, they get connected to the school and come more often,” he explains.
He recalls that Sushila had free training programme in the third grade. Initially, Sushila was focused on batting, like most other girls, but she soon took on bowling to broaden her skills. Under his guidance, Sushila has refined her technique, following the coach’s instruction that bowlers should spin (旋转) the ball. “Sushila’s bowling became around 34 months ago. I remember last year I thought she wouldn’t be able to bowl, but now she has progressed remarkably,” he notes.
Sushila comes from a humble background; her father works as a labourer while her mother is a housewife. In her village, due to poor economic conditions, opportunities for youth are limited. Despite these challenges, Sushila remains committed to pursuing her passion for cricket. “I want to play for India one day,” she says with determination. Her dream is to break barriers and pave the way for other girls from rural areas to take up sports and become excellent.
24. What was a direct result of Tendulkar sharing the video of Sushila
A. She was invited to train with Zaheer Khan.
B. She was compared to the 2011 World Cup team.
C. Her story reached a national audience.
D. Her coach received more media attention.
25. What was Ishwar Meena’s primary intention in starting free cricket training for girls
A. To help them compete in less crowded sports.
B. To keep them engaged with their education.
C. To prepare them for international competitions.
D. To identify talented players for his own team.
26. What does the coach imply about Sushila’s development as a bowler
A. She improved quickly because of her natural ability.
B. She had to switch from batting to bowling early on.
C. She made significant progress in a relatively short time.
D. She’d already mastered bowling when she joined his program.
27. Which of the following best explains the key message of Sushila’s story
A. Success often depends on strong family support.
B. Talent can overcome any economic disadvantage.
C. Social media is essential for young athletes to be noticed.
D. Dreams can be achieved through determination and support.
C
One common explanation for why children spend so much time on screens is that smartphones and social-media platforms are addicting them. Kids socialize online instead of in person because majority reported having smartphones, and about half said that most of their 12 friends use social media. But most children in the survey said they hadn’t been allowed to be out in public alone. Fewer than half of the 8 and 9-year-olds have ever gone to a grocery store alone, and many aren’t permitted to play unsupervised (无监管) even in their own front yard.
Yet these are exactly the freedoms they long for. Children want to meet up in the real world on their own, but because so many parents restrict their ability to socialize in person, no screens or smartphones. But this misses a key part of the story.
Since the 1980s, parents have grown more and more afraid that unsupervised time will expose their kids to physical or emotional harm. In another recent survey, parents were asked what they thought would happen if two 10-year-olds played in a local park without adults around, 60% thought the children would likely get injured. However, kids will always have more spare hours than adults can supervise—a gap that devices now fill.
We certainly don’t blame parents for this. Telling children to go outside doesn’t work so when no one else’s kids are there. That’s why we’re glad that groups around the country are experimenting with ways to rebuild childhood. In Piedmont, for example, a network of parents started dropping their kids off at the park every Friday to play unsupervised. Sometimes the kids argue or get bored—which is good. After all, learning to handle boredom and conflict is an essential part of child development.
28. What is the finding of the Harris Poll survey
A. Most kids have no access to smartphones.
B. Most kids lack real-world socialization.
C. Many kids are unwilling to be in public.
D. Many kids long for supervised activities.
29. What is parents’ main concern about their children
A. They may get hurt outside.
B. They may get addicted to screens.
C. They may get lost at home.
D. They may resist outdoor activities.
30. Why is the example of Piedmont’s park play mentioned
A. To highlight the importance of supervision.
B. To prove the success against digital devices.
C. To reveal the problems with unsupervised play.
D. To show an effort to restore childhood freedom.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Why Can’t Our Kids Log Off
B. Where Have the Children Gone
C. Can We Leave the Kids Alone
D. Should We Let Children Go Out

The Secret of Success
The recipe for succeeding in any given field is hardly a mystery: good ideas, hard work, discipline, imagination, perseverance and maybe a little luck. Oh, and let’s not forget failure, which Dashun Wang and his colleagues at Northwestern University call “the essential prerequisite (先决条件) for success” in a new paper.
But not every failure leads to success;,he adds. And what eventually separates the winners from the losers, the research shows, certainly is not persistence. One of the more interesting findings in the paper, published last October in Nature, is that the people who eventually succeeded and the people who eventually failed basically had the same number of attempts to achieve their goals.
It turns out that trying again and again only works if you learn from your previous failures. The idea is to work smart, not hard. You have to figure out what worked and what didn’t, and then focus on what needs to be improved instead of struggling around and changing everything, says Wang. “The people who failed didn’t necessarily work less than those who succeeded. They could actually have worked more; it’s just that they made more unnecessary changes. ”
As they explored “the mechanisms governing the dynamics of failures”, Wang’s team identified what they describe as previously unknown statistical signatures that separate successful groups from unsuccessful groups, making it possible to predict their final outcomes.
One such key indicator is the time between consecutive (连续的) failed attempts, which should decrease steadily. In other words, the faster you fail, the better your chances of success; and the more time between attempts, the more likely you are to fail again. “If someone has applied for a grant and they are three failures in,” Wang says, “if we just look at the timing between the grant and they are three failures in,” Wang says, “if we just look at the timing between the applications, we will be able to predict whether they will eventually succeed or not. ”
Working with such large-scale data, Wang and his colleagues were able to identify a critical point that was common to each of the hundreds of thousands of undertakings they had analyzed, a fork in the road where one path leads to a development region and one leads to a stagnation region.
Wang points out that such as the tipping point cuts against the traditional explanations for failure or success, such as luck or a person’s work habits. “What we’re showing here is that even in the absence of such differences, everyone can still have different outcomes. ” he says. What matters is how people fail, their response to failure and where those failures lead.
32. It can be learned from Paragraph 2 that ______
A. winners are more persistent than losers
B. failure is not important for success at all
C. more trying doesn’t necessarily result in success
D. winners and losers differ in how many times they tried
33. Wang and his colleagues believe that______.
A. no one can obtain success without failure
B. failure can sometimes help predict success
C. the performance pattern is difficult to identify
D. the critical point had been discovered by chance
34. The underlined phrase “a stagnation region” in Paragraph 6 refers to a region______
A. without progress
B. beyond recognition
C. unknown to outsiders
D. in its elementary stage
35. What is the conclusion of Wang’s research
A. Winners try less than losers, but gain more.
B. Perseverance is the utmost secret to success.
C. Working smart could turn failures into future successes.
D. Luck and work habits make any difference to the result.

First, have your friend sit upon a superhero costume, especially one with cape (披肩). Pose them feet against the open sky, and have another friend hold the cut out. Then you can edit it so that the hand holding the cape isn’t visible. __38__ Then have someone lie on the sheet to act as if they’re flying above a city skyline.
Other Tricks

George had his eye on a scoring record. He took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. The gym was old and small, but it held a long history. Maybe today I’ll make history, George thought.
His basketball league was celebrating. Today’s championship game marked its 50th anniversary (周年) since the league’s first championship.
At half George looked over the brochure for the anniversary. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped suddenly when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. He quickly went through the rest of the list. “Look!” he said to his teammate David, showing him the brochure. “You see who was the all-time record My dad! He never told me that. ”
“24 points,” David said. “That’s awesome!”
…George’s best record was 19 points. He was the Badgers’ top scorer. “It seems that my dad never showed off something like that,” George said.
When his parents arrived, George brought the brochure over to them. His dad laughed. “I didn’t miss a shot in that game. But at the score, I would have traded every shot for a win,” he said with regret. George hadn’t noticed that his dad’s team had lost the game. “That was a great group of teammates,” his dad added. “You have great teammates in the Badgers, too. ”
As George warmed up, soaked in all his father’s play. “This will be a struggle second,” the coach emphasized before they got on to court. “I want to see tough defense, sharp passing, and, above all, smart play as a team. ”
George was confident he could lead the Badgers to victory, just as he did in their previous games against the Lions. And he played really hard. As the game neared its end, George had already scored 23 points-Another basket would break his father’s scoring record.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

第二节 读后续写参考范文
However, his team was now one point behind the Lions.
With only seconds left, George got the ball. Everyone expected him to shoot alone to break his father’s record. Suddenly spotting an open teammate, he passed the ball without hesitation. His teammate made the winning shot, helping their team win the championship. George gave up beating the scoring record but brought victory to the whole team.
On the Lion’s final possession, their shooter found space and took a quick shot, but it missed.
After the game, George talked with his dad excitedly. He finally understood what his father meant decades ago: team victory matters far more than personal scoring records. Though failing to set a new personal record, George gained the most precious lesson about basketball and teamwork.
