Have you ever opened an old book and noticed a warm, sweet smell It is not just dust. Scientists say the smell comes from tiny chemical changes inside paper. Paper is usually made from wood, and wood contains lignin, a natural material that helps trees stand tall. Over time, lignin slowly breaks down and gives off small molecules. Some of them smell a little like vanilla or grass.
The smell of a book can also tell us something about its age and condition. A book kept in a dry and cool room usually changes more slowly. A book kept in a wet place may smell stronger, but it may also become weak or grow mold. That is why libraries control temperature and humidity. They are not trying to make reading less romantic; they are trying to keep books alive for future readers.
Researchers have even used book smells to help protect old collections. By studying the air around a book, they may learn whether the paper is becoming too acidic or whether it needs special care. This method is useful because it does not require tearing a page or damaging the cover.
Still, a smell cannot tell the whole story. Librarians also check the color of paper, the strength of the binding and the history of the book. In the end, the smell of an old book is both science and memory. It reminds us that objects carry time quietly, and that protecting knowledge often begins with noticing small changes.
19. What causes the sweet smell of many old books
A. Dust on the cover. B. Chemical changes in paper.
C. Fresh ink from the printer. D. The glue used by readers.
20. Why do libraries control temperature and humidity
A. To make books smell stronger. B. To stop readers from staying too long.
C. To slow down the damage to books. D. To keep every book the same color.
21. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Studying book smells. B. Tearing a page.
C. Changing the cover. D. Keeping books in wet rooms.
22. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. Why Old Books Smell B. How Trees Grow Tall
C. The Fastest Way to Print D. The History of Libraries

China launched the Shenzhou-23 spacecraft in late May 2026, sending three astronauts to the Tiangong space station. The mission attracted attention not only because it continued China’s regular crew rotation, but also because it included the first astronaut from Hong Kong to join a Chinese spaceflight mission. For many young people, the news made a national project feel closer and more open.
A space mission is often reported as a moment of excitement, but the real work is much longer. Before a launch, engineers test thousands of parts. During the mission, astronauts carry out experiments, check equipment and hand over work to the next crew. The table below shows some key points of the mission.
Key point What it means
Crew rotation New astronauts take over work from the previous crew.
Long stay One astronaut may complete an unusually long mission.
Hong Kong astronaut More young people can see different paths into national science.
Scientific experiments Space research supports medicine, materials and future exploration.
The mission also reminds readers that space development is not a single-person story. It depends on schools, factories, research centers and careful public planning. When a student says, “I want to be part of China’s space future,” the first step may be as ordinary as learning physics well, writing a clear report, or working responsibly in a team.
However, it would be too simple to see the mission only as a symbol of pride. Space exploration also requires risk control, long-term money, international understanding and respect for scientific rules. A mature reader should be proud, but also ask how the achievement was made and what responsibilities come with it.
23. Why did the Shenzhou-23 mission feel especially close to many young people
A. It was the first Chinese spacecraft ever launched. B. It included the first astronaut from Hong Kong in a Chinese spaceflight mission.
C. It ended all future space experiments. D. It was mainly designed for school students.
24. According to the table, what does crew rotation mean
A. Astronauts change their seats during a rocket launch. B. New astronauts take over work from the previous crew.
C. Engineers stop all experiments for several months. D. Students visit the space station online.
25. Which of the following shows the writer’s balanced view
A. Space missions are only exciting moments on TV. B. Pride is enough for understanding space exploration.
C. Space success needs both achievement and responsibility. D. The mission matters only to people who study physics.
26. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To explain why rockets are cheaper now. B. To compare Hong Kong with other cities.
C. To show how a current space mission connects pride, science and responsibility. D. To teach students how to become astronauts in one year.
D
Every morning at 6:40, Mr. Hale opened the side door of our school theatre. He was not a teacher, at least not officially. He mended broken chairs, carried boxes of costumes and knew exactly which old light would complain before it went dark. Most students passed him with a quick nod. We were always late for something important.
One winter, I stayed after school to practise a speech. I wanted the first prize badly. When my voice broke on the same sentence for the fifth time, I kicked the stage step. Mr. Hale looked up from a ladder and said, “A stage hears everything, but it forgives quickly.” I thought it was a strange thing to say. He climbed down, handed me a cup of warm water, and asked me to read the speech as if I were telling it to one tired person who needed hope.
That changed the speech. I stopped chasing a perfect sound and began to look at the empty seats. I imagined faces there: my mother after a long shift, my friend who hid his worries behind jokes, even Mr. Hale with paint on his sleeve. The words became less shiny but more honest.
I did not win first prize. I came second, which felt like a small disaster at the time. When I returned to the theatre, Mr. Hale was sweeping paper stars from the floor. “Second place still means you reached someone,” he said. “Do not make the mistake of measuring a voice only by applause.”
Years later, I understood. Some people do not stand in the light, but they keep the light working. They open doors before anyone arrives and close them after everyone leaves. Their care is quiet, almost invisible, and for that reason easy to miss. Mr. Hale taught me that excellence is not always a louder success. Sometimes it is the courage to make something useful, honest and kind, even when no one is clapping yet.
27. What can we know about Mr. Hale from Paragraph 1
A. He was a famous speech teacher. B. He worked quietly behind the scenes.
C. He disliked students who were late. D. He owned the school theatre.
28. Why did Mr. Hale ask the writer to imagine “one tired person who needed hope”
A. To make the speech more sincere. B. To help the writer speak more loudly.
C. To ask the writer to give up the contest. D. To make the speech shorter and easier.
29. Which sentence best shows the theme of the passage
A. “I wanted the first prize badly.” B. “A stage hears everything, but it forgives quickly.”
C. “Do not make the mistake of measuring a voice only by applause.” D. “I came second, which felt like a small disaster at the time.”
30. What is the writer’s tone in the last paragraph
A. Thankful and thoughtful. B. Angry and disappointed.
C. Nervous and doubtful. D. Humorous and careless.
第二节 任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面材料,从方框中所给的A-E五个选项中选出正确选项(其中一项是多余选项),将序号填入31-34小题,并回答第35小题。
How to Ask Better Questions
Many students believe good learners are the ones who answer quickly. In fact, strong learners often ask better questions. A good question can open a door that a quick answer may close.
____31____ Before asking, try to find what you already know and what you do not understand. A question like “I do not understand anything” is too wide. A clearer question is “Why does the writer use this example in Paragraph 3 ”
____32____ If you ask only for the final answer, you may miss the thinking process. Ask “How did you find the key sentence ” or “Why is option B more suitable than C ” Such questions help you learn methods.
____33____ Sometimes your question is useful for the whole class. Do not be afraid that others will laugh. Quiet confusion can grow into a bigger problem, while one brave question may help many people.
____34____ After getting an answer, write down what changed in your thinking. A question is not finished when someone replies. It is finished when you can use the idea in a new problem.
Learning to ask is learning to think. The best students are not question machines; they are careful explorers.
A Make your question specific.
B Record the answer and use it again.
C Ask about the way, not only the result.
D Choose silence whenever you feel unsure.
E Share questions when they may help others.

On the corner of Maple Street stood a tiny repair shop with a window full of broken clocks. Every morning, Mara passed it on her way to school. She never saw customers inside, only an old man sitting under a yellow lamp, turning small wheels with patient fingers.
Mara was preparing for a city art competition. She wanted to paint something grand: a storm, a mountain, perhaps a hero. But every picture looked too loud and too empty. One rainy afternoon, while waiting for the bus, she stepped into the shop. The old man looked up and said, “You have been staring at my failures for weeks.”
Mara was 36____. “Failures ” she asked.
He pointed at the clocks. “People bring them here when they have stopped. Until they move again, they look like failures.” He opened a watch and showed her a spring no longer than a fingernail. “Most things stop because one 37____ part is tired.”
The sentence stayed with Mara. At home she began to draw the repair shop window. She painted the old man’s hands, the lamp, the rain, and the clocks that were not yet fixed. The picture was quiet, but it had a strange 38____. Her teacher said, “This feels lived in.”
Mara did not win the competition. Another student’s huge painting of a storm took first place. For a few days, Mara felt 39____. Then a small card arrived from the old man: “Thank you for seeing the work before the ending.”
Years later, Mara became an illustrator. Whenever a project seemed broken, she remembered the shop window. She learned not to 40____ unfinished work. 书面表达参考范文
The Space Spirit Lights My Way
China’s space achievements have inspired many teenagers, including me. In my eyes, the space spirit means having big dreams, working carefully and never giving up. Astronauts may look great when they fly into space, but behind every mission are years of training, teamwork and countless tests. This spirit encourages me when I meet difficulties in study. If I fail an exam, I should not complain or give up. Instead, I will find the reason, make a plan and keep practising. From now on, I will set clear goals, listen carefully in class and try to be responsible in group work. Like Chinese astronauts, I hope to move step by step towards a brighter future.
