Most of the country’s wild Asian elephants, over 280 in number, are found in Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture (自治州) at the southern part of Yunnan Province.
Attracted by plenty of food like corn and bananas and getting used to human activities, these huge animals often walk into areas where people live.
The closer connection between humans and elephants has caused more problems, bringing difficulties to many communities that hardly had any experience with elephant activities before. To deal with these problems, local governments and conservation groups have carried out different plans.
In Xishuangbanna, the governments of Jinghong city have set up the Asian Elephant Safety Warning Team. Groups of professional “elephant watchers” use drones (无人机) to keep an eye on the movements of wild elephants all the time, offering important information to local communities and people. By giving timely reports on where the elephants are, the goal is to reduce the risks that come with human-elephant meetings as much as possible.
“Since it started its Asian Elephant Protection Program in 2000, the International Fund for Animal Welfare China has been focusing on helping local communities and people”, said Ma Chenyue, the program manager of IFAW China.
“Local communities and people are right in the middle of human-elephant problems. They are under direct pressure because wild elephants are moving into their living areas,” Ma said. “Their crops are damaged(破坏); their safety is at risk when they are taking care of their plants or looking for mushrooms in the forests; and they have actually given up some things in their development for the protection of wild elephants. So we feel it’s our duty to help them find suitable ways to live in peace with wild elephants.”
