When I wrote my first book three years ago, the words came naturally. Eight weeks of even rhythm(节奏)and it was finished with ease. So when I sat down to write my second book, I expected the same effortless flow. Instead, I found myself staring at a blinking(闪烁的)typing line that seemed to flash with quiet accusation无声的指责. I couldn’t begin.
Day after day, I repeated the same routines. I set up the perfect workspace, blocked out hours for writing, and reread old pages that had once made me proud. None of it helped. For a while, I blamed myself, mistaking my procrastination(拖延)for laziness or lack of discipline. However, I still continued to do that, because the routine kept me occupied and seemed that there was a progress, although the work itself remained still.
Eventually, exhaustion softened my stress, and I stopped pushing. What if the resistance was trying to tell me something I opened my journal and started writing—not about the book, but about why I couldn’t write it. The truth that poured out was simple and childlike: What if this book isn’t as good as the first What if readers decide a woman like me has already said everything she knows Beneath the delay, I found fear—not of the work, but of judgment. Procrastination had become a safety net; staying still meant avoiding being seen and possibly found lacking.
So I tried something different. I set a timer for five minutes and wrote whatever came. A sentence, half an idea, a small whisper of a scene. My hand moved first, and my mind followed. Step by step and piece by piece, those small beginnings grew into the book I had been afraid to start
By the time I finished, I saw procrastination and stillness differently. It was never merely delay. It was a quiet dialogue between the part of me that wants to try and the part that fears the fall. In truth, the stillness was the quiet reward of writing.
24. Why did the author keep following the same routines
A. To look for creative inspiration. B. To overcome her procrastination.
C. To gain a false sense of progress. D. To. improve her writing technique.
25. What actually prevented the author from writing
A. Lack of new ideas. B. Pursuit of perfection.
C. Desire for social fame. D. Fear of judgement
26. How did the author manage to restart her writing
A. By taking one step at a time. B. By focusing on big missions.
C. By reflecting on the outcome. D. By following a flexible schedule.
27. What is the suitable title of the passage
A. Courage helps fight against fear. B. Stillness can be part of creativity.
C. Procrastination is a waste of time. D. Writers should avoid taking breaks.

Standing in Nevada’s dry landscape, Project Red uses new methods to capture geothermal(地热)energy. Unlike old plants that need natural hot water storage areas near volcanoes, this facility uses Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) to get heat from solid rock. Workers start by drilling two wells over 8, 000 feet deep into rock hot enough to roast a turkey. Through the first well, high-pressure water is pumped down, breaking the rock to create paths. A key procedure involves drilling another 3,250-foot horizontal well水平井 to expand the area of hot rock that the system contacts—a technique used in oil and gas industry in order to maximize yield and production.
Water moves through these man-made cracks for 24-48 hours, gathering heat until temperatures exceed 380°F. As heated water rises through the second well, pressure changes near the surface turn about 20% into steam. This steam powers machines connected to generators发电机, creating clean electricity. Then the steam cools and condenses(凝结) back into hot water, which is used to heat a different kind of liquid with a much lower boiling point, such as butane丁烷, to drive a second generator before it is transported back to the system.
This progress eliminates根除了geothermal’s old obstacle of needing volcanic zones. Traditional plants电厂simply collect steam from natural hot springs, while EGS establishes water storage in unreachable ground. Another feature of the system is that they can be made more profitable by taking advantage of energy price shifts. Operators could plug the exit wells封堵出口井, causing water to accumulate inside the system, building up pressure and heat. Then the energy could be extracted提取during times when it is most valuable—such as during cloudy or windless periods when solar or wind aren’t working.
Some oil and gas companies, recognizing that the energy landscape形势is changing, are increasingly interested in building geothermal systems. There’s even a growing expansion to use direct geothermal heat to warm buildings, either through shallow heat pumps for residential buildings or integrated systems designed for entire districts—as Paris and Munich already do.
28. What is the main purpose of creating the second well
A. To speed up rock breaking. B. To regulate the pressure inside the wells.
C. To reduce drilling difficulty. D. To improve the efficiency of heat transfer.
29. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2
A. Butane. B. Hot water. C.Electricity. D. Steam.
30. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Geothermal energy is a stable power source.
B. Traditional plants will be replaced by EGS.
C. EGS depends on specific ground types.
D. EGS is more advanced than solar and wind.
31. What key development is mentioned in the last paragraph
A. Geothermal energy changing the landscape.
B. Traditional energy will be replaced.
C. Geothermal energy expanding applications.
D. Energy companies abandoning fossil fuel.

Australia’s tropical forests have become the world’s first to emit(排放)more carbon into the atmosphere than they are taking in, as a new study report in Nature. This switch is an alarm bell for the planet’s tropical forests, sounding as global leaders prepare for the COP30 meeting in the Amazon rainforest to address the crisis of global climate change.
The long-term analysis of Australia’s rainforests from 1971 to 2019 revealed that the forests’ woody biomass—its hard branches and trunks—has been shrinking since around the year 2000. Rising temperatures, droughts and tropical cyclones(气旋)driven by human activities have dramatically increased tree death rate, releasing stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Surprisingly, the extra atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO ) didn’t boost plant growth as climate models predicted, likely due to limited availability of nutrients plants need like phosphorus磷 and other basic ones—a factor that must be considered in estimating the fate of forests.
The Amazon rainforest, which spans an area nearly as large as the continental United States and is currently shouldering a quarter of land-based carbon dioxide annually, is also at risk. It suffered its worst drought in 2024, with deforestation reaching 17 percent. Scientists have warned it could face widespread dieback顶梢枯死by 2035 under the pressure of climate change, deforestation and extreme weather like storms. Other tropical forests face similar threats. Africa’s Congo Basin forests, once relatively stable, have shown increased tree death rate since 2010. Southeast Asia’s forests are endangered by the development of urbanization and agriculture.
A report made by the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP) notes that about 291 million of the world’s 1.6 billion hectares of tropical forest are delicate脆弱的, easily erased off from the green block forever. Protecting these forests will require global financial investments to triple三倍to $300 billion by 2030, yet global efforts for the protection are falling short of the intended commitments. “Tropical forests are huge carbon reservoirs and we must cherish the forest carbon stocks already built up over centuries, or even millennia.” says the programme manager Wannes Hubau in the report. “Losing them would be like setting off a carbon bomb, worsening climate change.”
32. What happened to the Australia’s tropical forests
A. They were expanding rapidly. B. They were turning into carbon emitters.
C. Their woody biomass was on increase. D. They became a carbon-friendly place.
33. What might limit Australia’s forest growth with more CO
A. Long-term data analysis. B. Climate model expectations.
C. Storage of carbon in trunks. D. Insufficient basic nutrients.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Tropical forests will die back by 2035.
B. Tropical forests face growing global threats.
C. Farming destroys forests in tropical regions.
D. Droughts cause most rainforest loss worldwide.
35. What can we learn from the UNEP report
A. Tropical forest conservation lacks funds.
B. Few tropical forests is at high risk.
C. The death rate of tropical forests is declining.
D. Africa’s forests have the highest tree death rate.

There’s nothing like fresh-cut flowers to brighten up your space. But even if you have somewhat of a green thumb, those blooms are on borrowed time. _____36_____ Here are some practical tips from Sarah Wiles, a professional florist with years of experience.
Snip剪断 the bottom of the stems.
Cutting the bottom of flower stems on an angle is a traditional and effective technique. “An angle is best,” says Wiles. “It creates a larger surface area to draw up water and prevents the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase.” _____37_____ What matters most is keeping the vase clean and water fresh.
_____38_____
It’s vital to change out the water before it gets cloudy. Every day would be best. “Some flowers, like sunflowers, promote more bacteria growth, so they need more frequent changes,” says Wiles. When doing so, remember to also add more flower food to the fresh water to maintain nutrient levels.
Keep the environment clean and tidy.
_____39_____ “As flowers die, they produce more bacteria and ethylene乙烯 gas, which makes the other flowers wilt枯萎 faster,” Wiles noted. Removing them as soon as possible helps the rest last longer.
Keep the vase out of the sunlight.
A vase is not a garden of living flowers; it’s a container of dying ones, so they don’t need direct sun. In fact, that’s a bad thing. “Direct sunlight increases the temperature and reduces vase life. The warmth accelerates the flowers’ breath and water loss, essentially making them ‘age’ faster,” Wiles says. _____40_____
By following these simple steps, you can slow down the clock and enjoy the natural beauty of your blooms for as long as possible.
A. Why does this supposedly work
B. Refresh water and flower food regularly.
C. What will actually make your flowers last longer
D. Buy more flower mix to add back into fresh water.
E. A cooler, darker room will keep flowers fresh longer.
F. While it turns out that’s a good thing, don’t worry if you cut them straight.
G. You can do this for artistic or beautiful factors, but there’s an even better reason to do it.

Li Wei, a high school senior, had always felt confused between her mother’s expectation and her own dream. Her mother, a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, ran a small clinic in their town. The air inside was always filled with the earthy smell of dried herbs草药. Her mother had long hoped Li Wei would take over the family business. “A career in medicine is a good choice, and it connects us to our roots,” her mother often said, pointing to the old books lining on the shelves.
But Li Wei’s heart belonged to classical dance. She spent hours practicing in secret, and her room was full of posters of international dance groups. One evening, while helping her mother prepare herbs, Li Wei accidentally knocked over a jar of ginseng(人参). As she hurried to clean up, her mother's voice cut through the silence, “You're too distracted. This is why you can’t focus on your studies—and the clinic.”
Li Wei’s cheeks turned red. “I don’t want to be a doctor!” she shouted. “I want to dance!” Before her mother could answer, Li Wei grabbed her bag and ran out, leaving the clinic door moving.
Weeks passed, and the tension between them reached boiling point. Li Wei avoided the clinic, spending long hours at dance practices even though her knees had become swollen and red. When she did come home, the house was full of cold silence, broken only by the occasional noise of her mother’s tool grinding(研磨)herbs. But Li Wei couldn’t miss the way her mother’s eyes looked at her dance shoes, or the soft sighs that came from her during their rare talks. She was eager for her mother’s support.
Then came a big chance: a national dance competition. Li Wei’s hands shook as she filled out the application form, her heart beating fast. But when she looked at the bottom of the page, she felt scared. The form needed a parent’s signature, a sad reminder of the gap between her and her mother.

第二节(满分25分) 参考范文
Paragraph 1: That evening, Li Wei arrived at the clinic, with the application form in hand. Her mother was carefully weighing dried herbs at the counter. With a deep breath, Li Wei placed the form in front of her, ready to brace herself for the refusal she had long expected. Her mother wiped her hands on her apron and picked up the paper. After a moment of careful reading, she signed her name without a word. Then, she reached under the counter, took out a small sachet, and placed it gently in Li Wei’s hand. “Keep this with you,”she said softly. “It will help you stay calm.”A sense of warmth welled up in Li Wei’s heart, resolving to do her utmost in the competition.
Paragraph 2: Before stepping onto stage, Li Wei held her mother’s lucky sachet(香囊)in her pocket. It was her first time competing on such a major stage. Great panic almost made her forget how to dance. Just then her mother appeared quietly beside her, “The clinic is my path, but this stage is your journey.”Her words lingered in the air like a blessing. Li Wei breathed in the sachet’s calming scent, felt her fear loosen, and gave her mother’s hand a grateful squeeze. Stepping into the lights, Li Wei danced—and in her movement, two separate dreams converged into a moment of perfect understanding.

W: May I ask a question I heard that the artist died in 1922 without ever selling a single painting. Is that true
M: Yes, indeed. The artist preferred to be alone. He lived by himself, working in secret, and painted almost all his life. His friends and family only discovered his talent after he died at the age of 92. When they cleared his house, they found more than 300 paintings. And no one had ever seen these paintings.
W: How surprised and delighted he would be to know that his artworks are now being shown like this!
M: Yes. One thing I particularly love is that these paintings tell me what his life was like from when he was young until his death.

M: It was my driving test today. Did you forget
W: Oh no. You failed
M: Yep, I failed. That is my fourth fail now.
W: What went wrong
M: I think it’s because I was nervous. I passed all my practice exams with my instructor with high scores. But then with a stranger, I failed.
W: I have an idea.
M: What is it
W: Ask your instructor to go with you to the exam. You are allowed to have them in the back of the car.
M: Really
W: Yes. My cousin did that to help her pass. It took her seven times!
M: I shall talk to my instructor about it.
W: How many lessons have you had
M: Feels like a million. But probably around 50. All my salary from working at McDonald's disappears because of driving tests.
W: It will be worth it in the end. It took me forever to pass my English and math exams. You must keep going. It’s the same when you are applying for jobs. You might be turned down 10 times, but on the 11th try, the job is yours.
M: I suppose so.

Hello, and welcome to Sounds of the Airwaves. First released in 1970, the last song we played was “Let It Be”by the Beatles. Written by English musician Paul McCartney, the song was inspired by a dream he had of his mother, who sadly died when he was just fourteen. In the dream, she tried to make Paul feel better by saying everything would be okay, and just “let it be”. He woke up, wrote the song, and it went to number one in countries all over the world!
Sit back, relax and listen with me to some of the best songs the world has ever produced. Over the next hour, we’ve got 1987’s “Bad”by Michael Jackson, “Universe” by the boy band Exo, and many more.
But before all that, coming up after the break, we have something totally different. . . From the 2019 album Lover, which sold over a million copies in China, “Cruel Summer” is a song about pain and upset. Sung by Taylor Swift, the popular American singer, it’s one to make you think!
Stay tuned—we’ll be back after the advertisements!
