How much do you know about the folk stories from a country with a long history—Greece (希腊) Here are some.
Odyssey years Odysseus had a long journey filled with hardships for ten years before returning home. The odyssey years are a special time in life between being a teenager and becoming a true adult. Some people in their 20s might go to school and then take a break. They try different jobs to see what they like. So, don’t stop trying, as it’s all about learning who you are. Damocles’ sword Damocles is a man who was made to sit under a sword hung by a thin hair to understand that great power is always with hidden dangers. It reminds us that beautiful but unsafe things often hide serious risks. Bad living habits or bad personality can both be like a Damocles’ sword in our life. They may bring trouble little by little. So, stay careful and keep away from these hidden dangers.
Achilles’ heel Achilles was a powerful hero with a super strong body except for his heel. He won all the fights until his enemies hurt his heel and finally caused his death. Everyone has an Achilles’ heel. For example, a top student may be great at every subject but might be super scared of speaking in public. Knowing your own Achilles’ heel helps you be honest with yourself and grow up bravely. Sisyphus’ stone Punished by the gods, Sisyphus had to push a huge stone up a mountain, but the stone would roll back down every time he reached the top. Sisyphus’ stone means tiring and endless tasks. But it also teaches us the power of keeping going. For teens, daily study and repeated practice may be like Sisyphus’ stone. On April 20, a 19-meter stranded whale was saved on the beach of Xiangshan, Ningbo. Every year, thousands of whales get stranded on beaches worldwide. People wonder why this strange thing happens.
Sickness and wounds are common causes. Sick or hurt whales may feel tired and weak, or they haven’t eaten because they’re ill. They can be in the final stages of being ill or die at sea and end up getting washed up on a beach. Yet sickness or wounds only play a part when a single animal is found stranded.
Whales are social animals because of the herd effect (羊群效应), explaining group strandings. When one member of the group is sick or in trouble, its painful calls can mislead the other members to follow it to the beach.
Moreover, whales’ echolocation (回声定位) ability is designed for deep water. Some water areas are too shallow (浅的) for whales to find their ways. If they don’t notice that they’re moving into shallower waters, when the water drops away, they will be left high and dry.
Of course, human activities, such as human underwater activities, overfishing, pollution, ship strikes (ships hit some whales heavily), are responsible for many of the cases that lead to strandings.
If you meet a stranded whale, do not try to move it, as this may harm the animal. While waiting for help, keep the animal upright and wet. Avoid getting water in its blowhole (喷气孔), and cover it to prevent sunburn.
36.What is the main cause of group stranding
A.Herd effect. B.Sickness and wounds. C.Whales’ echolocation.
37.What will happen if a whale moves to shallow waters
A.It will be kicked out of its group.
B.It will lose its sense of direction.
C.It will get sick due to dirty water.
38.What should we do when meeting a stranded whale
①Keep it upright. ②Pour water on it. ③Push it back to the sea.
④Keep it from sunburn. ⑤Get water into its blowhole.
A.①②④ B.①③④ C.①④⑤
39.What can we infer from this passage
A.Whales prefer traveling alone.

C.Littering is a cause of whale stranding.

四、任务型阅读
阅读下面短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题,并将答案写到相应位置。
Suppose that you have some free time to kill. There is a fun short video and an interesting 1000-word article. Which one will you choose
Maybe you will choose the video. After all, watching videos is a part of many people’s daily life. Fewer people like reading long articles now. So some people worry that videos will take the place of articles one day.
Videos help us learn new things quickly. They are also more fun than reading words in an article. That’s why lots of people like videos better. But videos can’t help us learn about the ancient world fully. Many historical stories are only written down in text. Only by reading articles can we learn clearly about what happened in ancient times, and learn about the knowledge people had got. Besides, reading articles can make our reading skills better, and it can even improve our writing skills.
Short videos come into our mind and leave quickly, just like a fast car. After watching one video, we often want to watch another one right away. We even forget what we watched just a few minutes later. Reading an article can stop this problem a little. It can also improve our thinking. When we read a long article carefully, we will pay more attention to the content. What’s more, reading articles lets us use our imagination, but videos don’t give us this chance.
Videos may change how people learn about the world, but articles ________. Will articles be replaced by videos The answer is no.
41.What do some people worry about according to the passage
42.Why do many people prefer videos to articles
43.How can we learn about the ancient world by reading articles
44.In what ways can reading an article improve our thinking according to paragraph 4

Nowadays, school life is full 46 students, but most of them are still interested in volunteer work. Let’s take my classmate Lily as an example. She has been in the school’s volunteer club 47 the end of last year, and she felt really happy to help others. This makes me think about what volunteer work means and what we can learn from it.
In our daily life, we teenagers can take part in many kinds of volunteer work 48 (active). For example, some students go to the old people’s home to help clean their rooms and talk with them. Others choose to work in the library rather than stay at home on weekends. They help organize books and keep the reading area tidy. These small acts of kindness can bring 49 (warm) to people in need.
50 (become) a good volunteer, we need to have patience and love. First, we should listen carefully to the people we help, instead of just talking all the time. Second, it is important to understand 51 (other) feelings. A small smile or a kind word can make a big difference. Also, working with other volunteers can teach us how to work in a team and communicate well.
What’s more, volunteer work helps us grow. We can 52 (teach) to care about others and be thankful for what we have. All in all, volunteer work is not only about giving help, 53 about learning and growing.
54 meaningful it is to be a volunteer! As for me, I’ll join the school volunteer club this term. I hope to make the world much 55 (good) with my small efforts.

38.最后一段第二、三句“While waiting for help, keep the animal upright, wet. Avoid getting water in its blowhole (喷气孔), and cover it to prevent sunburn.”可知等待救援时,要让鲸鱼保持直立、湿润,避免水进入喷气孔,还要覆盖它防止晒伤,对应①②④。
39.文中第五段“Of course, human activities, such as human underwater activities, overfishing, pollution, ship strikes (ships hit some whales heavily), are responsible for many of the cases that lead to strandings.”可知人类活动中的污染是导致鲸鱼搁浅的原因之一,垃圾丢弃会造成污染,所以可以推断出乱扔垃圾是鲸鱼搁浅的一个原因。
