Don’t go for short wins. Weiqi is a game of strategy. Sometimes you must give up a stone to protect the whole board. Life is the same. In Grade 8, I spent too much time reading passages word by word instead of focusing on word groups or main ideas, which led to a poor result. Then I turned to my teacher for help and I finally knew that seeing the big picture is more important.
Let ups and downs come naturally. Tea ceremony means more than just drinking tea. Its steps are as follows: warm cups, add leaves, pour water, wait, then serve. Leaves go down, come up, then rest at the bottom. As tea leaves rise and fall in the cup, so do we in life. It is common that hard times sink and good times rise. Don’t force them — let them be.

Leo stared at the canvas (画布) in the corner of his room, which was covered with a messy mix of dark blue and gray paint. It was supposed to be a painting of the ocean for the school art competition, but now, it just looked like a joke.
Three days ago, Leo was full of confidence. He wanted to win the first prize to prove to his father that art was a serious career, not just a hobby. However, his first try went wrong. The colors were too dark, and the waves looked like rocks. Upset, he threw his brush onto the floor and decided to give up.
“You know,” a soft voice came from the doorway. It was his grandmother. “The sea isn’t always blue and sunny. Sometimes it’s angry and dark, just like your painting.”
“But it’s ruined. I can’t fix it,” said Leo.
Grandma walked over and touched the paint. “In China, there’s an art that turns weakness into wonder. When a bowl breaks, people don’t throw it away. They fix it with gold lacquer (漆). The breaks make the bowl more beautiful because they tell a story.”
After hearing this, Leo came to understand an important life lesson. Mistakes or imperfect things can be turned into something special and beautiful.
He looked at his messy painting again. Then he picked up his brush, dipped (蘸) it into some bright gold paint, and added a thin line across the dark waves. It looked like sunlight breaking through a storm.
In the end, he didn’t win the first prize. But when his father saw the painting, he didn’t talk about the prize. He simply said, “This looks powerful, son. It tells a story.”

What time is it That’s a very good question! From morning until night, clocks help us to plan our day. They tell us when things begin and end.
Before clocks, our ancestors used a special tool called sundial to tell time. They placed a stick upright on a flat plate. As the Sun moved across the sky, the stick’s shadow (影子) moved around the plate. In the morning, the shadow was long and pointed to one side. At noon, it was short and pointed straight ahead. In the late afternoon, it grew long again on the other side. The sundial helped them know when to work, when to eat, and when to rest.
Today, we know that the Sun doesn’t move around the Earth. The Earth turns on an imaginary line called an axis (轴). As the Earth turns, the Sun seems to be moving across the sky. The time the Earth takes to make one complete turn is one day.
★. The Earth travels around the Sun. And it needs lots of time to finish one trip. The time it takes is called a year because its orbit (轨道) around the Sun is very huge and long. To be very specific, it takes the Earth 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 12 seconds to go around the Sun.
The Earth is divided into 24 time zones. Each time zone is one hour apart from the next time zone. For example, when it is 10:00 a.m. where you live, it is 10:00 p.m. on the opposite side of the world. In two hours, it will be noon where you live, but on the other side of the world, it will be 12:00 at night!
Thanks to clocks and calendars, we can tell time very easily. However, it is the movement of the Earth that really allows us to measure time.

37.What did people in the past believe about time

D. Other movements of the Earth help us know time, too.
39.What can be known about time zones according to paragraph 5
A. Neighboring time zones are half an hour apart.
B. Places in the same time zone have the same clock time.

The Art Festival is a tradition of our school. Among all activities, I like English Reading Day best. It was held last December. During the activity, we shared classic stories and acted out plays. At the same time, we exchanged reading feelings.I like it most because it makes learning English fun and interesting. Through reading, I have learned many new words and expressions. It not only improves my reading skills but also builds my confidence. Now I become braver to speak in public,so I hope more students can join us next year. It is truly a meaningful experience that I will never forget.
