(2025·四川雅安二模)I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a stand-up comedian in 2003. I'd never set foot in a comedy club before. I've always been a performer — I've worked as a singer, actor and musician — but all that came to an end after an accident.I live in New York, and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh,to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training,I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It's hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properly laughing, and I was addicted.
Now my sets differ. I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people,or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today,I'm nervous before I step out. My first line is,“Hello, everybody. I'm 88 and three-quarters years old. I'm telling you that in case I don't make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me,saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I'm pleased I can show that as an older person, you don't need to take a back seat in life.
I've no intention of stopping comedy. I'm taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I'm 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It's hard work, but it stops me being bored. I'd only be playing golf otherwise.

(2026·山西运城模拟)Humour plays a great role in helping one deal with stress, anger, fear, anxiety and other difficult emotions. Sometimes, that means purposefully shoring up defenses against hard times to come. Other times it can mean laughing when you want to cry,or cracking an illogical joke when it feels like the sky is falling and Earth is on fire.
To psychologists, humour is an unconscious coping mechanism,a kind of strategic behaviour or thought. Not all of these strategies are beneficial:Drinking or overeating, for example, are more dangerous coping mechanisms, whereas humour taps creativity to cope with stress, which can enable a viewpoint shift and block distressing emotions.
And of course, there's the physical reaction of humour:laughter. With it comes better breathing, muscle relaxation and a higher pain tolerance.“The stress is there;you just don't feel it as much,” says psychologist Sultanoff.
Of course, humour isn't foolproof:Making the wrong joke in the wrong way is just as likely to increase stress and disconnection. Mean-spirited or disparaging (贬低的) humour actually causes people to be further apart and increases division.
“Humour can arise during stress without cause or effort to make it. But humour can also be played consciously,” Sultanoff says, adding that he sometimes travels with a clown nose to find fun in life's everyday routine. “Joyful use of humour builds psychological antibodies (抗体),” he says.
But taking up the power of humour doesn't mean ignoring the negatives. The point is not to never feel difficult emotions. “Stress is there for a reason, and it's to call your attention to a problem that needs to be solved,” Sultanoff says. “When you experience a negative emotion like sadness or anger or frustration,it's important to recognise why that's there.” Turning to humour too soon may prevent someone from processing emotions in a healthy way, increasing stress rather than decreasing it. “By expressing humour you give yourself a break. And we all need a little break,” Sultanoff says.

Add More Laughter to Your Life
Laughter isn't just a quick moment of happiness. 1 . All you need are small, fun choices to bring more humour into your day. Here's how to make laughter part of your everyday life.
 2 .
Laughter grows when you practice gratitude and stay positive. Try seeing challenges as chances to learn, and look for the good in tough situations. Every day, write down three funny or happy moments (even tiny ones!). Every individual can do something interesting. Keep things around you that make you smile—like silly decorations, funny quotes,or small practices like a daily meme (表情包) break.
Do things you love
3 . Make time for hobbies that make you feel like a kid again:dance to your favorite songs, play video games with friends, try painting,or join a comedy club. Fun activities help you relax and laugh more easily. Exercise (like sports, yoga,or even walking) also releases “happy chemicals” in your brain, putting you in a better mood for giggles (咯咯地笑). Treat these activities as important but not optional!
Hang out with funny people
Spend time with people who make you smile. Funny friends find humour in everyday moments — like cracking jokes, sharing funny stories,or laughing at silly things. 4 . Plan fun hang-outs:comedy movie nights, board games,or even just playing around at the park. These moments build happy memories you can look back on when life feels stressful.
Don't take yourself too seriously
It's okay to laugh at yourself! Embrace mistakes or awkward moments — they make great stories later. Share funny mistakes with friends instead of feeling embarrassed. 5 .
Laughter is free, easy and always there to boost your mood. Remember:Laughter is like a muscle — the more you use it,the stronger it gets.
A.Focus on the bright side
B.Playful experiences create laughter
C.Keep a diary of your happy experiences
D.They will offer you more chances to face the challenges

With it comes better breathing, muscle relaxation and a higher pain tolerance. “The stress is there;you just don't feel it as much,” says psychologist Sultanoff.
5.How is humour helpful as a coping mechanism
A.It prevents hard times coming.
B.It means an emotional release.
C.It generates positive mindsets.
D.It inspires artistic creativity.

B.To illustrate an effect of humour.

D.To warn the danger of stress.
7.Which of the following is called disparaging humour in paragraph 4
A.Making your friend look stupid.
B.Telling a story in a funny way.
C.Wearing clown clothes at a party.
D.Laughing at your own mistakes.
8.What does Sultanoff think of a difficult emotion
A.It's something we should avoid.
B.It's a reminder of our problems.
C.It draws our attention to humour.
D.It gives us a break from routine.

Add More Laughter to Your Life
Laughter isn't just a quick moment of happiness. 1 . All you need are small, fun choices to bring more humour into your day. Here's how to make laughter part of your everyday life.
 2
E.The more you can smile at your own silly habits, the lighter life feels
F.It's a superpower for boosting your mental, emotional and physical health
G.The good atmosphere helps you stop overthinking and just enjoy the moment
