Three Inspiring Musicals
Musicals have long been an influential art form, combining attractive tunes, vivid performances and meaningful themes. They not only entertain people but also pass on valuable spirits. Here are three musicals that have touched a wide audience.
Hamilton
Hamilton, created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the life story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers. Unlike traditional musicals, it mainly depends on hip-hop, rap and R&B to develop the plot, making historical events lively and easy to connect with. Through its creative music and powerful performances, the musical encourages people to fight for their dreams and value their own influence on the world.
Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen pays close attention to the inner world of teenagers. It centers on a student who struggles with social anxiety and finds himself trapped in a lie. By showing the troubles and growth of young people, it reminds the audience to care about teenagers’ mental health and learn to face themselves honestly. Its touching songs and realistic themes have won wide recognition among young viewers.
Le Rouge et le Noir
As a famous French musical, Le Rouge et le Noir is adapted from Stendhal’s classical novel of the same title. It tells the life story of Julien Sorel, a young man from a poor family who fights to achieve his youth’s desire for self-value and fairness. “I was frightened at the start, it was -14℃ and even lower on the mountain pass.” These were the words from Gill Punt, who had more reason to worry than other runners in the PolarNight Marathon in Norway, since she chose to run dressed as a polar bear.
But the PE teacher from the UK not only finished in under five hours, she also broke the world record for the fastest ice marathon dressed as a mammal (哺乳动物), despite temperatures dropping to -23℃.
With that determination, it is no wonder she has raised nearly two million pounds for Cancer Research UK with her brave act.
Ms Punt travelled to Troms , Norway for the challenge and completed the 26.2 miles in four hours and 58 minutes, describing the experience as “amazing”. “I could hear Arctic wolves howling (嚎叫), pushing me to keep running, but the vision from the costume was really difficult, so I could only focus on a couple of meters ahead,” she said.
Ms Punt has been raising funds through running events since 1999. Even by her standards, the race was “a tricky one”, with dark, icy conditions making her realize why others rarely attempt it wearing a costume. She said she decided to wear the polar bear suit as it is the symbol for the cancer charity — Cancer Research.
She gained great fame for her costume, becoming the race’s official representative and drawing Norwegian media attention.
“When we came out of the wilderness into small villages, there were children holding drawings of polar bears to support me — it was mind-blowing,” she said.
She raised another 21,000 in Norway, and says she will continue until she reaches her lifetime goal of 2,000,000.“I think there’s still one more adventure to go,” she added.
24. What can be learned about Gill Punt’s race in the PolarNight Marathon
A. She set the record of various challenges.
B. She completed the race faster than she expected.
C. The appearance of the wolves pushed her to continue.
D. She has reached the goal of raising two million pounds.
25. Why did Gill Punt choose to run dressed as a polar bear
A. To attract the attention of the Norwegian media.
B. To promote awareness of Arctic animal protection.
C. To honor an organization fighting against a disease.
D. To challenge herself in an extremely cold environment.
26. What does the underlined word “mind-blowing” in Paragraph7 mean
A. Confusing. B. Impressive. C. Tiring. D. Frightening.
27. Which of the following words best describes Gill Punt
A. Capable and romantic.
B. Determined and honest.
C. Courageous and caring.
D. Inspiring and cooperative.
C
Microplastics have become a common source of pollution across the Earth — they have settled in the deep sea and on the Himalayas, stuck inside volcanic rocks, filled the stomachs of seabirds and even in fresh Antarctic snow. They are even appearing inside humans.
Now, new research suggests that a simple, cheap measure may significantly reduce the level of microplastics in water: just boiling water and filtering (过滤) it. In a study published Wednesday in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, researchers from China found that boiling tap water for just five minutes — then filtering it after it cools — could remove at least 80 percent of its microplastics.
Crucially, this process relies on the water containing enough calcium carbonate (碳酸钙) to trap the plastics. In the study, boiling hard water containing 300 milligrams of calcium carbonate led to an almost 90 percent drop in plastics. But in samples with less than 60 milligrams of calcium carbonate, boiling reduced the level of plastics by just 25 percent. Additionally, the research didn’t include all types of polypropylene—and they didn’t study other chemicals previously found in water such as vinyl chloride, becoming increasingly difficult. Even bottled water, scientists found earlier this year, contains 10 to 1,000 times more microplastics than originally thought.
Scientists are still learning about harmful microplastics — but what they do know has raised concern. The new study suggests boiling tap water could be a cheap fix. “The way they demonstrated how microplastics were trapped through the boiling process was nice,” Caroline Gauchebert, an environmental scientist at the University of Oregon who was not involved in the research, tells New Scientist. “We should be looking into upgrading drinking water treatment plants so they remove microplastics.”
28. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph
A. By giving examples.
B. By defining a concept.
C. By describing a scene.
D. By providing statistics.
29. What determines the effectiveness of trapping microplastics in water
A. The hardness of the water.
B. The water’s cooling time.
C. The frequency of filtering.
D. The type of plastic in water.
30. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning bottled water in paragraph3
A. The popularity of bottled drinking water.
B. The seriousness of the microplastic problem.
C. The danger in overusing pure water.
D. The difficulty in treating polluted water.
31. What is Gauchebert-Lindsay’s suggestion about
A. Causes of microplastic pollution.
B. Possible direction for further study.
C. To involve more researchers.
D. Potential application of the findings.
D
A new air-powered robot can practically walk right off the 3D printer. One day, robots like this could work underwater or in dangerous environments, its creators say.
Yichen Zhai, a mechanical engineer at the University of California, and his colleagues gave their robot six flexible legs, like an insect. Air from a canister (小罐) flows through tiny tubes and chambers inside each different leg. That moves air into different sets of chambers, and the process starts again. This cycle moves the robot’s legs to head forward.
The robot’s design is unusual. Typically, making a robot involves designing different parts from different components and combining them, but this one is a single piece made of just one material. The robot may be soft, but its shape actually makes it quite stable (平稳). Having six legs helps it stay balanced as it moves. Whenever one leg stays in contact with the ground while the other three stay on the ground, which helps it not fall over. And because the design doesn’t contain any electronics, it’s also water-resistant.
But the new robot isn’t quite ready for those conditions yet. The robot has to be able to move faster first, which will let it move farther on a single air canister. As of now, the insect-like robot moves along at a leisurely pace of 4 centimeters per second. That’s a little faster than a snail, but slower than a turtle.
32. Why are tubes and chambers applied in the robot
A. To store air for energy supply.
B. To control movement with air.
C. To save space inside the robot.
D. To spare pressure for extra tasks.
33. What is special about the new robot
A. It has six legs and knuckles.
B. It grows faster for improved mobility.
C. It can survive harsh field conditions.
D. It avoids 3D printing to reduce costs.
34. What can we infer about the new robot from paragraph4
A. It operates well in fire areas.
B. It moves faster on a single air canister.
C. It leaves little room for advancement.
D. It hardly makes sense in reality.
35. What does Zhai’s text mainly imply about the new robot
A. It plays a satisfying role at present.
B. It shows a notable limitation in speed.
C. It needs room for advancement.
D. It goes beyond original expectations.

In a small town, there lived a girl named Jessica, who had always been a star student, topping every class before college. Confident that her academic success would continue smoothly in college, Jessica spent most of her time scrolling (滚屏) on social media, ignoring her parents’ reminders to focus on her studies and lessons.
This careless attitude continued for months until the day of Jessica’s mid-term exams. While her friends were worried, Jessica remained untroubled, convinced that, just like before, she would manage to get through, according to her past experiences and natural intelligence. However, when her friends gathered to discuss math problems after class, Jessica offered the wrong answers. Noticing one of her friends showed an obviously concerned look. Jessica, attempting to maintain her calmness, assured her friends, “Don’t worry. I’ll be fine, just like I always was!” But inside, a sense of self-doubt began to grow.
As the exams began, Jessica’s sense of ease quickly disappeared. With each question, she found herself unsure, realizing just how little preparation she’d done. Despite this, she wrote down whatever she could recall from previous years, telling herself it would be enough for her to pass the exams.
However, when the results came out, Jessica was shocked to find she failed all the exams. The disappointment in her parents’ eyes was more than she could bear. Her friends, who had been studying hard, were celebrating their success, while Jessica was left to face the consequences of her actions. Jessica couldn’t escape the feeling of embarrassment. She knew she had a long road ahead, and repeating the year was the only way forward.

Should We Help Strangers
Recently our class had a discussion about whether we should help strangers. Opinions vary.
Some students think helping strangers is a good virtue. Helping others means helping ourselves. However, others are worried about getting into trouble or being misunderstood after offering help.
As for me, we should try our best to lend a hand when strangers are in need. We can protect ourselves properly while giving help.

This failure, however, turned out to be an important turning point for Jessica. She abandoned bad online habits and threw herself into all subjects every day. She took notes carefully in class and asked teachers and classmates for help with difficult problems in spare time. Gradually, her knowledge base got solid and her confidence returned little by little.
When the results of the final exams were announced, Jessica was nervous but hopeful. To her great joy, she passed all subjects with satisfying grades. From this experience, she realized no success comes without hard work and she would cherish every learning chance from then on.
