Four years ago, I was in a very dark period in my life. Having lost two job opportunities and been forced out of a startup, I felt my life falling apart. Nothing seemed to go right, leaving me doubting my worth and unable to trust anyone around me.
At my lowest point, I turned to a close friend, Anne, who talked me down from the cliff. She warned me not to rush into any regretful decision, and was helpful to me in processing what was going on and how to transition to a better place. While her intervention gave me the strength to keep going, the real turning point came in April 2023, when I discovered the Appreciation application. It opened my eyes to a simple yet profound truth: even when my finances and employment were shaky, I could still appreciate the breath in my lungs, my beautiful apartment, and the supportive friend who stood by me. So I started to get my life back together.
I began a daily practice of listing what I was grateful for, combining it with meditation every morning and night. Later on, I joined a counseling group where I better expressed my feelings, understood the power of appreciation by relating to others’ experiences and realized that others faced struggles similar to or even worse than mine, shattering my sense of loneliness.
Additionally, I learned that accepting kindness is also a way to be grateful. For example, once a stranger offered to buy my coffee after my phone failed to pay. I could have easily walked away and said, “No, I’m not going to accept your gesture.” Instead, I opened my heart and said, “Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”
Today, I continue to share such stories, amazed at how my life has turned around. Looking back, I realize that appreciation can pull anyone out of the lowest valley. It reshaped me from a broken soul into someone who celebrates kindness every single day.

Only modern humans have true chin, an inverted T-shaped structure that includes a projection (凸部) at the base of the jaw, a midline keel (龙骨), and small depressions (凹陷) on either side. No other living primates, such as chimpanzees, gorillas or monkeys, have this special structure. For decades, scientists have debated its origin: did it have a special biological use, or was it just a side effect of other skull changes
A new study led by Noreen von Cramon-Taubadel gives a clear answer: the chin is probably an evolutionary accident, not a product of direct natural selection. The term studied 532 skull shells and jawbones from 15 species — the close evolutionary cousins of humans — and researchers mainly tested three evolution possibilities: random genetic change, direct selection, or a side effect of other skull and jaw parts.
With careful measuring and insightful checking of details, they obtained the result that showed strong directional selection from humans’ and chimpanzees’ common ancestor to modern human. Key changes included a more bent skull base, an expanded brain case, a less projecting lower face, and a slimmer carved jawbone, linked to adaptations like walking on two legs, softer food and smaller front teeth.
However, of the nine chin-related features they closely studied, only three showed direct selection signs. This supports that the “protruded” is a feature caused by a combination of other changes. The study notes skull and jaw features are linked as the brain case expanded and teeth shrank, the jawbone changed, slowly forming the projecting chin.
Though unimpressive-looking, the chin ushers an evolution lesson: not all unique features are directly shaped by natural selection; some are side effects of wider changes. The study is published in PLOS One.
28. What have scientists debated about the human chin
A. Its size. B. Its function. C. Its origin. D. Its shape.
29. How did the research team get their results
A. By reviewing literature.
B. By using questionnaires.
C. By doing field research.
D. By studying groups of samples.
30. What does the underlined word “protruded” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. The curved jawbone.
B. The human chin.
C. The brain case.
D. The projecting lower face.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. How primate jawbones evolved over time.
B. Why the human chin is a unique feature.
C. The study on the origin of the human chin.
D. The link between skull changes and evolution.

Solar power generation in the US began to gather force around 2012, and as it became mainstream, concerns about land use changed. Over 60 percent of land transformed for solar installations is formerly used to grow crops. Since both solar farms and agriculture farms require flat, sunny area close to transmission infrastructures, experts have focused on combining the two to achieve harmony, a practice known as agrivoltaics.
Agrivoltaics means that solar power and farming activities (such as feeding animals, growing crops and improving the environment) exist together. It often multiple benefit: solar developers can earn extra by constructing efficient land use; farmers and landowners can generate income from both renting land and agricultural activities like crop growing or sheep grazing (皮草); local communities also benefit from improved habitats and soil restoration.
By July 2024, there are about 530 agrivoltaic sites in the US, evenly split between pollinator (传粉者) habitats and solar grazing. Sheep grazing is particularly favored because they do not damage other plants or wires, and managed sheep can improve soil nutrients, which is crucial for areas with intensive agriculture.
However, crop production in agrivoltaic systems still faces severe challenges. Only 40 out of the 530 agrivoltaic sites focus on crop production, most of which are small-scale research sites. Scientists need to determine which crops thrive under solar panels, and how different climates and locations affect their growth. Additionally, crop production requires engineering and design modifications — such as raising panels higher or spacing them further apart — which increase costs or reduce energy output, leading to market hesitancy.
Despite these challenges, agrivoltaics holds great promise. With climate change bringing less water and higher temperatures, combining solar and farming is necessary. Experts are also exploring urban agrivoltaic systems, such as experimental projects in abandoned parking lots. The next decade is expected to provide more data on different integration methods, making agrivoltaics applicable worldwide.
32. What led to the appearance of agrivoltaics in the US
A. Land use conflicts.
B. Protection of animal habitats.
C. Shortage of land.
D. Increasing need for solar power.
33. Which advantage does agrivoltaics bring to farmers according to the text
A. Cost reduction in power use.
B. Improved farming equipment.
C. No further agricultural soil loss.
D. Higher income from different sources.
34. Why is sheep grazing more popular in agrivoltaic sites
A. It means lower maintenance costs.
B. It provides natural vegetation control.
C. It reduces damages to the environment.
D. It increases the profit from each sheep.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly concerning agrivoltaics
A. Its potential risks.
B. Its bright prospects.
C. Its demanding conditions.
D. Its enormous challenges.

That was in 2021. David and his wife Anna were enjoying time on their boat on Sydney’s Parramatta River when Anna’s unique diamond engagement ring slipped off her finger. It fell, hit the floor, and bounced. It could have bounced in any direction, but unfortunately it bounced into the water. The treasured ring, over a century old and passed down to the couple 40 years ago, quickly sank into the river’s muddy depths. Losing the heirloom(传家宝)after so many years was heartbreaking for them.
Initially, when the ring was lost in the Five Dock Bay area, Anna took an instant photo of the exact location. David organized divers to search the area, because he knew how special the ring was to his wife. However, despite multiple attempts, the searches proved unsuccessful. The couple eventually gave up hope.
But one month later, new hope emerged for David and Anna when Nick Richards, a detectorist skilled in finding lost jewellery, heard about their lost ring in the Parramatta River. Nick, with a record of recovering around 400 rings, felt he had to try to find it.
When Nick reached out, David was happy to have another search. Nick admitted the river’s challenges, joking that it was not a dive one should take lightly. The conditions were severe, with poor visibility and potential threats appearing. He knew the river’s dangers — silty, muddy, and home to bull sharks.
Nick systematically searched the riverbed, covering about 20 square meters. He was thorough, ensuring not a single inch was missed. While he searched below, David and Anna waited on the riverbank. Every few minutes, Anna looked at her watch. She paced back and forth, twisting her hands. “What if he doesn’t find it ” she whispered. David patted her shoulder but said nothing. The sun moved across the sky. Each passing hour felt like a day.
